It's a pretty busy non-towered airport. It's actually scheduled to get a tower but doesn't look like that will happen until 2029: https://www.abc15.com/news/region-central-southern-az/tucson/air-traffic-control-tower-project-at-marana-regional-airport-set-new-deadline-after-delay There are protocols pilots follow at non-towered airports that are different than towered airports. Will be interesting to hear if those were followed in this case. Very sad.

Just like it took a couple years for DEI to manifest itself, it's going to take a couple years to remove from the system as well. Might as well cancel for the next few years. Strike 5,538 Posted February 19 19 minutes ago, TheNewGirl said: I've canceled all air travel for this year. My hubs has a trip in March and I am a little worried. Don't be. Air travel is still the safest form of travel in the world today. Especially when you're talking about commercial air travel there are several systems working to prevent accidents. You have ATC obviously, then you have something called ADSB which allows planes to see where each other are, and there is a system called TCAS that commercial planes have that will monitor the area right around that plane and tell the pilots what to do to avoid another plane that is in danger of hitting them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traffic_collision_avoidance_system Relatively speaking, flying small planes like the ones that collided in AZ today is much more dangerous than commercial and I still feel totally safe every time I go up. Strike 5,538 Posted February 25 1 minute ago, Hardcore troubadour said: Looks like this near miss did. Air traffic has significantly increased over time, right? I’d say Less traffic less incidents? No, this incident didn't. ATC gave the pilot of the small plane explicit instructions to hold short of that runway and the pilot IGNORED those instructions. That's why at the end of the transcript I posted he was told of a "possible pilot deviation." He was then given a phone number of the tower to call and, based upon that discussion, the tower will decide whether to move this incident up the chain to the FSDO for further action. Unless you want to lower the number of planes in the sky to ONE, this type of incident will always be possible. But the FAA is not tolerant of pilots who fock up. And air travel is still the safest form of travel in this country. Are you also in favor of banning all non-commercial cars in the country because clearly we have too many cars driving around now. Yes. I’d like to remove the driving privileges of at least 40 pct of the population. You wouldn’t?

You said "non commercial." I'm asking if you think we should remove all non commercial vehicles from the road since we clearly have "too many vehicles driving around now." And I would absolutely remove the driving privileges of a large percentage of the population, but that's because they drive like sh*t. As I said to my neighbor the other day when she asked me what I thought about a couple of these recent aviation incidents, if we enforced driving laws the way the FAA enforces laws related to flying, we'd get rid of 99% of accidents on the road. But it would result in a lot of people losing their drivers license.
