Trump threatens 200% tariff on European alcohol as trade war escalates

Full Story

President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to impose a massive tariff on European alcohol in response to the European Union’s retaliation against his steel and aluminum tariffs – a tit-for-tat escalation of a trade war that could easily get out of hand.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said his administration would impose a 200% tariff on alcoholic beverages from the EU unless it rescinds the 50% tariff the European government imposed Wednesday on US spirits.

“If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES,” Trump said. “This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S.”

Wouldn’t it raise the cost of US prices for consumers and reduce the foreign demand for US products when Canada predictably retaliates with tariffs of its own?

It should lead to Americans buy more American made products.  Everyone should have a local brewery, distillery or winery in their area.  Buy local.

By the time you got that local distillery up and running, Weathervane Don will have paused the booze tariff and moved on to another shiny object.

What are you talking about?  They already exist.  There are multiple breweries, distilleries and wineries within 30 miles of me.  Do you not have any where you live?

Actually, all three exist in my small town of 4,000.

I thought you were implying that Americans would start more of these businesses.

We have a ton of breweries, wineries etc. in Philly. We also have a lot of American-owned English and Irish pubs that would theoretically be hurt in the short term by this tariff.

Of course, it’s all academic since the likelihood of Don committing to one of these shower thoughts for more than a few days at a time seems slim.

I was saying that we already have them and we don't need alcohol from Europe.

I’m saying a tariff on European booze is as likely to hurt US consumers and businesses as help them. But it’s sort of a moot point, since Don is unlikely to follow through on it for more than a few days at a time.

I have a giant bottle of grey goose that will probably last me another ten years. And I drink American beer and wine. Guinness on occasion. I’ll pay up when I do.

Would be great if all sales of alcohol was made illegal, and those caught with alcohol where deported, using  the self-deport app.   Indeed

This is the right answer.  I generally only buy NJ beer and CA wine because the NJ wine is too expensive and not as good.

So who’s lying Hawkeye, you or God?   Indeed Amen Thanks

Hmmm...So domestic producers will have a difficulty selling their products in Europe, based on their new tariffs.  In an effort to cover their production costs, domestic producers will lower their prices in the US, to keep the volume flowing.   I like it.

Doesn't matter in Michigan anyway, liquor prices are set by the state.   But I see it being good for american spirit drinkers.

The Great Lakes region also makes great wine.  Try a bottle.
