๐Ÿ† Taiwan eyes zero tariffs with US, pledges more investment ๐Ÿ†

Recommended Posts

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te on Sunday offered zero tariffs as the basis for talks with the U.S., pledging to remove trade barriers rather than imposing reciprocal measures and saying Taiwanese companies will raise their U.S. investments.

President Donald Trump announced across-the-board import tariffs on Wednesday, with much higher duties for dozens of trading partners, including Taiwan, which runs a large trade surplus with the U.S. and faces a 32% duty on its products.

"Tariff negotiations can start with 'zero tariffs' between Taiwan and the United States, with reference to the U.S.-Canada-Mexico free trade agreement," Lai said.

Taiwan has no plans to take tariff retaliation, and there will be no change in Taiwanese companies' investment commitments to the United States as long as they are in Taiwan's interest, he added in comments provided by his office.

Taiwan's TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, last month announced an additional $100 billion investment in the U.S.

"In the future, in addition to TSMC's increased investment, other industries, such as electronics, information and communications, petrochemicals, and natural gas will be able to increase investment in the U.S. and deepen Taiwan-U.S. industrial cooperation," Lai said. - Yahoo Financeย

More winning. This never gets old.ย

And we'll be seeing a lot more winning over the next few months. Countries will start caving one by one.ย

A bit of good news in a sea of uncertainty is always welcome.

Itโ€™s only good news if the U.S. accepts the offer. So far we havenโ€™t. Vietnam made a similar offer and we rejected it. Trump said yesterday that other nations offering to remove tariffs would not be enough; they have to do away with the โ€œtrade imbalanceโ€.ย

And how does he propose they do that? Do Vietnamese companies have to build factories in the US (and making what, exactly?)

I am reading the EU is also talking about zero tariffs. Haven't spent much time reading up on it though, since I have a job.ย

My hope would be that we enter into negotiations with those who ahve made reasonable offeers, and we do so expeditiously.ย  Trump seems to need more. Hhe needs not just reasonable concessions, but he seems to need som ebending of the knee, some groveling, some praise, some admission of past wrong doing.ย  He seems to have ego caught up, as is the norm for him.ย  I say set that aside, take what wins there are in the hope that it spawns more wins.ย  My retirement is not there for his ego gratification, or at least it is not from my perspective. I worked 50 years for my retirement, it is mine and not his bargaining chip.

So as a reward for this Trump slapped a 32% tariff on them. Meanwhile, our enemy, China, received a 34% tariff.

Taiwan currently has a 1.7% tariff on US goods, so no doubt they think it's no big deal to go to zero.

Now how Trump figured a 32% tariff in response to a 1.7% tariff, with a US ally no less, was a good idea, who knows.

Of course they will need to wait for El Jefe del Junta to have time to review the terms, should take no time at all.

I acgree we need to immediately nurture those countrieds who seekfair trade with little or no protectionism.ย  There will still necessarily be imbalances based on market size and the fact that we are a wasteful consumer nation addicted to spending so balance is not a realistic goal, but fair trade is.ย  We need to signal that immediately by engaging with Isreal, Taiwan, Vietnam and welcoming the overtures of India and the E.U.ย ย

Taiwan had a 1.7% tariff on the US, that's negligible.

The US & Vietnam had a free trade agreement.ย

Israel had previously - note, previously - dropped its tariff amount to 0.00%.

And we should acknowledge that and reciprocate.ย  Sadly Trump seems to have needed The Isreal Prime Minister to come here and say for the consumption of the press that Trump is Isreal's best friend and to imply that Trump got something more when they talked.ย ย

ย

I thought my position was clear that we need to immediately accept all reasonable deals, even existing ones, and immediately adjust our tariffs as to those countries.ย  i suspect with regard to Viet Nam there is some trepidation that China may try to wash goods through Viet Nam, but trepidation be damned.ย  Learn to track goods through the global supply chain and address abuses if they arise, not by trepidation.

It's dead in the water, along with scores of other free trade agreements and treaties that we have built up over 80+ years. There are no unilateral unhinged tariffs in a free trade agreement. It's breached.

Serious question - do you know what a breach is?

Dealership sells you a car, it delivers the car to your home. You receive the paperwork, yep there's the contract, owner's manual, yep, yep, all's in order. And then you take a look and there's no steering wheel and no wheels. Hey contract is still in existence, right? All good?

Trump made a trade deal with Canada in 2020. Yet we have the worst trade deal ever in history with them now. It will be much better this time after he focks up everything for (hopefully) a couple months first.ย

Mr. Trump is shattering that trust as he punishes allies and blows up the USMCA that he negotiated in his first term.

Liberal definition of "free trade": "A fair deal is where everyย other country screws the US and the US should take it in the @ss like a good cuck"
