A person can commit an illegal action. Depending on the nature of that illegal action, a person can be called a “criminal”. (Entering this country without proper papers is either a misdemeanor or a low level felony depending on circumstances and does not by itself make a person a “criminal”). 
 

A person can NEVER be “illegal” in a free society. Illegal is an act. To a call a person that is to dehumanize them. That is an aspect of a dictatorship.

I scoff at the language police.  They hope to quiet thought opposed to their own.  They hope to shame others, to make others defensive, to waste intellectual and emotional resources of others. Ii tend not to comply.  In the end even when new terms are adopted in an attempt to frustrate and shame speech (they would say to advance understanding and dialog) any connotations they hope to escape rapidly reattach to the new, politically correct term.

Liberals have no problem with legality. It’s conservatives that seem to have a problem with it on a regular basis. First they were OK with police being violently attacked at the U.S. Capitol. Next they voted for a convicted felon to be President of the United States. Now they approve when that same felon continually violates the laws and the Constitution; they cheer him on.
