And in the case of Harvey Milk there is no proof he was a pedophile. As an adult in his 30s, he did have a consensual sexual relationship with a teenager but it was legal at the time.

Per Randy Shilts book and other articles I've read, Harvey Milk was 33 when he met at a New York theatre production Jack Galen McKinley, who was 16 at the time. They did not have a relationship until a year or two later when Jack was 17 (or maybe 18) which in both New York and California would have been the age of consent. Even if you disapprove of their relationship because of the age difference, it was not illegal at the time. Their relationship ended a few years later when Milk decided to live in San Francisco while McKinley opted to stay in NY to be in a production of Hair.

I was unaware of Harvey Milk's Military service.  I looked it up.  Very pedestrian.  Not worthy of having a ship named after him, for his military service.  As for his political activism, I am unaware of politcal activists having ships named after them.  Is there a USS DR. MLK, a USS Susan B. Anthony, a USS Rhyming Rev. Jessie Jackson?

 

Regardless of the above this renaming seems to me to be something well down the list of priorities, so far down it is on page 10 or 12 of the list.  I would want the Secretary of Defenses attention to more pressing matters, but whatever.

I was unfamiliar with the rules for naming navy ships.  I had to look them up. The U.S.S. Harvey Milk seems an anomalie among names by the guidelines, but the guidelines do allow some flexibility.

Interesting question. I just looked it up and there are a few examples of Navy ships named after people for things they did outside the military. Gabby Giffords and Robert F Kennedy’s both have one.

IDGAF about Harvey Milk. I know little about him other than what was captured in the film, which was good, but came out a long time ago so I don't remember most of it.

The issue I see is the targeted marginalization (to put it nicely) of LGBTQ by this admin. Every authoritarian needs to have "the enemy from within" to gin up anger. Trump sees a lot of enemies from within, and has shown that his rhetoric causes violence. Any group or individual he targets will eventually be targeted by some of his sycophants, in some cases violently. That is a feature, not a bug.
