It is reported that Rangel-Ibarra was convicted for gun possession after a 2018 arrest.

Upon arrival, the deportees had shackles removed from their wrists and ankles and one at a time descended the stairway of the chartered 767 aircraft to be reprocessed by waiting Cuban immigration and health officials. Some seemed visibly dazed to suddenly be back in their homeland.

He wasn't in there, and one of the waitresses came out and told me what had happened,” Arceno said. “So, he was coming in to open the restaurant, and he was preparing the stuff like normal, like a regular day, and he went out to grab some soup. He exited the restaurant, and that's when they detained him and handcuffed him.”
