Now, a new NBER study suggests that immigration has more far-reaching consequences than merely depressing wages and lowering employment rates of low-skilled African-American males: its effects also appear to push some would-be workers into crime and, later, into prison.

 

"Remarkably, as far as we know, no study has examined if there is a link between the resurgence of large-scale immigration and the employment and incarceration trends in the black population," co-authors George Borjas, Jeffrey Grogger, and Gordon Hanson write in Immigration and African-American Employment Opportunities: The Response of Wages, Employment, and Incarceration to Labor Supply Shocks (NBER Working Paper No.12518). The authors are careful to point out that even without increased immigration, most of the fall in employment and increase in jailed black men would have happened anyway. Nevertheless, the racially disproportionate effects of immigration on employment are striking.

Not sure what this means, but blacks don't need help or handouts. Black women have managed to get educations and good jobs, we certainly don't need to stop immigration in order for black men to get jobs. Black men, like the rest of the men, need to get their skills up and find jobs like everyone else manages to do.

Although my job has been cut, I'm looking forward to doing something new, outside of science. I am older and maybe something more customer service related. Working in the lab and then on the computer everyday has been rewarding but I think being around people would be a welcome change.

Yes, indeed, Blacks folks who are unemployed can enter the workforce by replacing migrant workers picking crops in the field, cleaning toilets in hotels and busing tables at restaurants and all for a minimum wage - I am sure that they will be standing in line for these jobs that undocumented Latinos no longer do.

I think liberals who support DEI and affirmative action don't consider themselves racist even though everything they see, they filter through a race based lens. Also, liberals unlike conservatives, deliberately dumb down their speaking whenever they address minority audiences BOTH in public or private because they see the world through this same race based lens and quietly conclude that these people listening to them are retarded, whereas conservatives treat them as equals both publicly and privately because they secretly see them as equals.
