So the original demand from the Democrats was to make the ACA subsidies permanent. Now they are compromising, asking for a 1 year extension only. Thune says it’s a non-starter.

Why? Why keep the government shut down over 1 year of spending?

Here is Townhall.Com, reacting to the Supreme Court stay on SNAP payments:

“Good! SNAP is RIFE with fraud! Time for MASSIVE CHANGES to the program, and no more dessert cakes, sugary junk, luxury coffee, etc.”

“Please sir,” said Oliver Twist, “May I have some more?”
“MORE!” Mr. Bumble roared. “More, you ungrateful wretch!”

Why would a 1 year extension be a non-starter? This would end the shutdown and kick the can down the road for another year.

What am I missing here in Thune's thinking, outside of that the don't want to negotiate at all?

You responded to me as if you understood, then went back to this idiotic idea of giving an extension for a year, beyond the upcoming full budget.

That's not a negotiation.  That's a gift with money we don't have.

If I were the Reps, I'd agree to extend the Covid ACA subsidies to the date they target for the full budget.  And I would require the Dems to decide what of their boondoggle things they are willing to drop to pay to keep them going.

Why should we extend subsidies that were put in to effect due to COVID?

To end the government shutdown and then create a bipartisan committee to study the issue and come up with ideas.

Sounds good to me.

It's temporary, and Democrats want to create a bipartisan committee to discuss the issue.

MAGAs need to learn to compromise.

Again if they offer that I’m betting the Dems will accept it. But they won’t offer it.

Because people still need the money; they won’t be able to afford ACA otherwise.

We should repeal the ACA anyways.  It's garbage legislation.

Good lord, these people actually act like they’re on the take. There’s no constitutionality at issue here. Funds are appropriated. This will take forever.

Democrats really extend the Olive Branch One-year extension at a cost of 30 million. That's less money than we just gave to Argentina. Republicans would rather shut the government down than give healthcare to people for one year.

Why don't the Dems offer it?  Since, you know, the Dems are keeping the government closed?  And this is NOT supposed to be a negotiation, which all of you Lefties ignore whenever I say it.  The negotiation is supposed to be for the actual budget.

This proposal is idiotic, see my comments up thread.  It would take these payments off the table for the actual budget discussion.  I would be in favor of extending them for the period of the CR, not to exceed a certain date so that the Dems don't avoid approving the budget.

Is the cost of the plan to cover these subsidies about 40 billion for the next year? That will allow these dipshits to reopen the government?

It's not idiotic.  It's a year so that people who sign up for the ACA know what their payments will be for one year.

I'm sure that if by miracle a budget was passed, which hasn't happened since 1997, that the budget would override anything in the cr.  In fact as a matter of negotiation if reps wanted to to do that, ok fine.  But they don't want to negotiate.  That's why we're shutdown.

Less, about 30 billion.  Instead of giving money to Argentina, we could give people a year of health insurance and still have 10B leftover.

Ok. So my question to anyone who thinks this is a bad idea is is this number accurate? If it is accurate why would you oppose this?

How the America First cheerleaders are letting this slide - giving Argentina 40 billion to set on fire while the government is suing itself to not give out food stamps and canceling flights all over the place among all the other shet - is wild to me.

Where are you people at?

You can give him all kinds of shet about this.

Why would you want to keep the government shutdown over 40 billion (or less)?

Schumer has offered up this deal, right?

If he did why isn’t it being taken up.

Aren’t we taking in “trillions” in tariffs that we are all paying tor ultimately? Where the Fock is the money going?

Again it’s not idiotic. A year, rather than permanent, is a major concession, an attempt at real compromise. Now you’re demanding that the Democrats compromise further while the Republicans do nothing. That’s not the way negotiations work.

And that’s the whole point. From the start the Republicans have refused to negotiate about any of this.
