Hegseth announces Qatar will build air force facility at U.S. base in Idaho

Washington — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Friday announced a finalized agreement that will allow the Qatari Emiri Air Force to build a facility at the Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho. 

The agreement, which Hegseth announced alongside Qatari Minister of Defense Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at the Pentagon, will allow Qatari pilots to receive training alongside U.S. soldiers. There are no foreign military bases in the U.S., but some foreign militaries do maintain a presence for training. The Singaporean Air Force also has a presence at the Mountain Home base. 

Hegseth said he is "proud that today we're signing a letter of acceptance to build a Qatari Emiri Air Force Facility at the Mountain Home Air Base in Idaho."

"The location will host a contingent of Qatari F-15's and pilots to enhance our combined training, increase lethality, interoperability, it's just another example of our partnership," Hegseth said. "And I hope you know, your excellency, that you can count on us."

"Building a base" is almost guaranteed to be an overstatement of what is happening.

They'll probably have some offices and have some planes in a hanger of an existing base.

In fact, the second post essentially says that.  They are building a facility (which is just a building or two) on an existing US base to facilitate training.

Context before everyone digs their heels in and starts dying on hills.

Someone should tell little squissy that Singapore is on the same base training with F-15s. Qatar is already training in Florida at Tyndall AFB. The Dutch and Germans are on a New Mexico base and NATO in Texas

Was going to say this. A simple google search would show that there are at least four bases that are used for non-US military training and some have been around for decades. 

This is nothing new, and it's not a foreign-owned base. 

UK, Germany and a Euro-NATO joint training effort are also using training facilities at a couple of our bases.

The planning for this facility began under the Biden administration. A final environmental impact report was published in 2022, while President Biden was in office, which looked at the "potential impacts associated with the beddown of a US-led Qatar Emiri Air Force F-15QA squadron" at the base. The process has been in the works for several years.

It's a training facility, not an Air Force Base you dope. And if you were anywhere close to anyone who was in the Military you'd understand the difference. A Military Base is a Military Base and Qatar would never put a base in Idaho, it would make no sense strategically.

This is nothing new, we've been doing this forever. Every Air force base in the Country trains other countries who purchase our equipment. To open a Training Facility here is no big deal and holds no advantage militarily. There are OUR F-15s.
