Colonel Roswell P Rosengren of the US army, one of General Eisenhower’s press officers, fixed his eye on the sofa where the Nazi dictator had taken his own life.

Eighty years on, that grisly memento has allowed scientists to do something extraordinary: they have sequenced Hitler’s DNA.

The biological design of the tyrant has been studied in detail, and the research will be covered in the Channel 4 documentary Hitler’s DNA: Blueprint of a Dictator, which will be broadcast on Saturday. The study has made astonishing revelations and raised tantalising questions.

There is a staggering insight into Hitler’s sexual development, an analysis of his ancestry and question marks over his neurodevelopmental and psychological condition. How these discoveries add to our understanding of history is up for debate.

The research will probably provoke controversy, both for its having been done and for its findings. What is clear is that if Hitler had seen these genes in anyone else, his verdict would have been unequivocal.

Professor Turi King, the lead geneticist on this research, said: “If he was to look at his own genetic results, he would have almost certainly have sent himself to the gas chambers.”

King, a scientist of global repute who is best known for identifying the remains of Richard III, knew that some would be alarmed by this project when she was asked to investigate it for the documentary. Indeed, several laboratories refused to help but, in a time when historic DNA from the Romans to Beethoven is being tested, King concluded that it was best to ensure that this most sensitive of cases was done properly.

“I agonised over it,” King said. “But it will be done at some point and we wanted to make sure it’s done in an extremely measured and rigorous fashion. Also, to not do it puts him on some sort of pedestal.”

She added: “The genetics can in no way excuse what he did.”

At the outset, the scientists did not know what they would find or even if the sample was genuine. Now they have demonstrated the scope and the limitations of genetics, raising more questions than answers. Things might have been easier if their findings were more dull.

“He could have had the most boring genome on the planet,” King said. “But he didn’t.”

Claim: Hitler had a sexual condition

The research is due to be published in a scientific journal, but the key finding is this: Hitler had Kallmann syndrome, a genetic disorder that hinders the normal progression of puberty and the development of sexual organs. Derogatory songs from the war about Hitler’s anatomy may have been meant in jest but, it transpires, they were not just accurate but probably did not go far enough.

A 1923 medical examination of Hitler, which was uncovered in 2015, showed that the Nazi leader did indeed have an undescended testicle but, while we do not know exactly how it manifested, Hitler’s newly discovered genetic condition would have also affected his testosterone levels. It means he had a one in ten chance of having a micropen!s. This is suggested by stories from the First World War, where Hitler was bullied over the size of his genitalia.

The genetic finding, while definitive, can only allow for speculation in terms of its impact on Hitler. However, it seems likely that he would have struggled to form sexual relationships, and one historian believes this could prove critical in our understanding of Hitler’s rise to power.

Alex J Kay, a historian at the University of Potsdam, who specialises in Nazi Germany and is a senior historical consultant and co-lead investigator in the documentary, said: “This would help to explain Hitler’s highly unusual and almost complete devotion to politics in his life to the exclusion of any kind of private life.

“Other senior Nazis had wives, children, even extramarital affairs. Hitler is the one person among the whole Nazi leadership who doesn’t. Therefore, I think that only under Hitler could the Nazi movement have come to power.”

Claim: Hitler has Jewish ancestry

In his own time, there was a rumour that the virulently antisemitic Hitler was in fact illegitimately descended from a Jewish grandfather, but the genes disprove this. They show that his ancestry is Austrian German, something Hitler had instructed genealogists to demonstrate.

For many this will be the key finding as this myth is still perpetuated today. In 2022 the Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov claimed that Hitler had Jewish blood as a way of justifying his description of Ukraine as “Nazi” and justifying Moscow’s invasion of the country, despite the fact that it has a Jewish president.

Verdict: debunked

Claim: Hitler had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

More complicated is the evidence that Hitler probably had one or more of a number of neurodiverse and mental health conditions. Unlike Kallmann syndrome, which can be diagnosed from the absence of one gene, these conditions are indicated by thousands of genes.

The researchers looked at Hitler’s genome and compared it with “polygenic scores” based on thousands of samples. These establish his likelihood of having various conditions, but they do not diagnose. Nevertheless, the findings are striking.

Hitler was in the top percentile in terms of his chances of having autism, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and some of his genes overlap between conditions.

However, it is not clear what his diagnosis would have been; we can only speculate on the questions of what he had and how it affected him. For instance, Hitler may have had some symptoms of schizophrenia, but he would not have been diagnosed with the condition as it would have made it impossible for him to do what he did.

Dr Alex Tsompanidis, an autism researcher at the University of Cambridge, said: “I think it’s fair to say that his biology didn’t help. I don’t think any clinical term applies here. We can’t know, we can’t diagnose. The cognitive process is likely to have been affected, but I use his behaviour as much as genetics when I say that.”

The documentary does speculate on how some symptoms might have affected Hitler’s life, such as atypical social skills, mood swings, unconventional thinking and paranoia. However, such discussion is to be conducted with extreme caution.

Verdict: inconclusive

The limits of genetics

All these findings have been taken from one stain of blood, and this had to be verified. The film-makers found Rosengren’s swatch from Hitler’s sofa in the Gettysburg Museum of History in the US, and samples were taken from it in 2019. Now they had to prove it was genuine.

Work had already been done in this area. In 2008, a Belgian journalist called Jean-Paul Mulders had debunked a story about a potential Hitler descendant. In doing so, Mulders found a relative of Hitler who shared a common paternal ancestor: a straight line of male ancestry meant that their Y chromosome would be identical.

When this sample was compared with the blood from the Rosengren swatch, the match was perfect. With no risk of cross-contamination, it had to be Hitler’s DNA. The 80-year-old sample is as degraded as it should be and this type of Y chromosome is rare, making the chances of a mistake all the more remote.

The layperson may think such a sample provides clarity but, demonstrably, DNA can make things more complicated. That, in part, is the point for King.

“The biggest thing I want to have come out of this is the complexity of genetics and the complexity of conditions,” King said. “People see DNA as the silver bullet that will answer everything. People often view DNA as deterministic, which it is not. DNA is always just a part of the puzzle about who somebody is … You cannot see evil in a genome.”

The only time people should be publicly proclaiming and seeking out their niche fetish is on dating app searching for (whatever). Most of us don't care about Hitler nor anyone else's sex life, espcially with all this LGBTQ Alphabet bullsh*t going around, we don't want to hear about it or perverts advertising /proclaiming it from the rooftops. Seek it out on the downlow in the channels available for the sort of thing you like, leave everyone else alone, and have enough decency to act like a mature person in public.

How us and various Asian cultures have spent the last 3000+ years of civilization culling the sociopath gene from our DNA while the reason other races are more prone to violence is that they never did so. I'd as soon leave such thinking in an unopened box and just deal with the fallout of having evil turds arrive every so often because trying to fix it by searching out certain DNA factors will lead to a worse place.
