My guess is Nigeria picked some field as the target to placate trump and act like they wanted US involvement with the ultimate goal of them being able to say mission accomplished and didn't really intend to do jack squat.

My guess is that the US went to Nigeria about stopping the Christian genocide, the Nigerian president said that they have a tenuous relationship between the Christians and the Muslims, so it's better if we position it as religion-neutral "terrorists" so that one side doesn't get pissed.
