BMW X5 Xdrive 40I or Volvo XC90 T8

Recommended Posts

Anyone know much about these 2? The Wifey wants a new car so she's dragging me out to test drive both later today. Here's all I know:

The Volvo has a 455 Horsepower Supercharged 4 cylinder Hybrid and the BMW has a Twin turbo Inline 6 that makes almost 400 HP.

Both are very close in price. The Volvo seems more luxurious but the BMW seems more performance/sport based.

Can any Volvo or BMW owners elaborate?

mostly this.  it will depend on your priorities in ownership.

We have an X3 as our family car and it has been very comfortable on our road trips (to lake tahoe- 4 hrs; southern california- 7 hrs more or less; az- 12 hrs)

my oldest friend has a volvo suv. very nice, but he has had some issues with it.

Edit: several years back a lady ran a 4 way stop sign and totaled our x3. we drove x5s and decided to stay with the x3 due to drive feel.

we though we might need more space, but the x3 is sufficient for us now that kiddo is in college.

Nice!! Yeah, that's my hangup. I don't think I'm ready for a plug in hybrid like the Volvo. The BMW is still all gas.

I love everything about the Volvo except that Hybrid is the only option

That's the hangup to. We love the X3 as well but she wants a 3rd row. It comes in the X5 but I don't believe so in the X3.

shoot... if you have a little time, and they are still offering it..... you might have some fun savings doing a euro-delivery. bmw discontinued their program during covid. we had done two in the past and had amazing trips. one in germany, austria, switzerland. the other in france a month or two before i started culinary school

I don't own either and don't really know anything about either other than my impression of these two makes/models.

I would choose the BMW X5 every time over a Volvo.

My Wife is leaning that way to.

I just like the Volvos interior much better, it's much nicer than the BMW IMO. I also love that classic Volvo look for some reason.

Great point.

I'll give a review later today. Both dealerships are side by side, so this should be interesting.

First car was a 84 Volvo 240 DL sedan. Maroon with tan interior. Drive that car across the country a couple times. Was a tank.

We looked at the Lexus, I wasn't impressed. It's a glorified Toyota. Which isn't a bad thing, it just didn't do anything for us.

I know a couple people who have bmws.

Their biggest dislikes of their cars were:

  • BMW: Known for electrical issues and expensive parts, making long-term ownership costly.
  • Advanced Technology: Sophisticated electronics, infotainment, and driver-assistance systems.
  • Specialized Parts: Often proprietary, expensive, and only available from dealerships.
  • Complex Systems: Air suspension (Land Rover), Quattro AWD (Audi), turbo engines (BMW).
  • Labor Costs: Technicians need specialized training, increasing hourly rates.

I can't remember specifically what one of their problems was as this was a couple years back, but the guy's car needed a small specific part which was inexpensive in itself, but they quoted him $5000 to change it out. He said they needed to remove the engine along with a something other shlt they needed to dig through. The guy was determined to fix it himself. He was rigging up a pulley system to help him remove the engine at the time I was talking to him.

I never asked him what year the car was though.

I watched something on that to. There's been a lot of issues with the info screen Tech. Most were fixed with a dealer re-boot, others more serious.

If I recall this car cost about 4000 bucks. Was set on a Supra. Saw this at the lot and my old man said to drive it. I had saved up like 2000 bagging groceries and working at a restaurant. He covered me.

I later got into an accident in this car. The Volvo destroyed a Honda, I drove away. The old man knew what was up.

Is the BMW engine the B58....sounds like it.  It's considered one of the best engines around these days...same engine in the Toyota Supra and now Morgan.

If you don't know if it's a B58...you should find out.

I'll see your Matador and raise you a 74 booger green Dodge Dart, which was like my 6th car and the campus cruiser. Chicks laughed at it, dudes loved it. I had to put a lead additive into the tank at every fill! Nothing says sex appeal like leaded gasoline!

No. It's a terrible way to handle this situation of buying a car.

Buying new, just go check out both cars and price it yourself and tell each dealer you are deciding between two cars and what you are being offered for the other. Then judge for yourself.
