any sports medicine geeks?

Or just someone who has been there done that/experienced anything like this.

Lifted on Thursday afternoon (shoulder workout.)

Went as it always does for the most part.

No pain, everything normal.

Wake up Friday....all normal.

Wake up Saturday....I think it was all normal. Didn't notice anything til maybe a slight bit Saturday evening.

Wake up Sunday...moderate pain.

Wake up Monday...worse pain than Sunday. More than moderate. Hot tubbed, Iced. Hot pack, Advil. Etc.

So....WTF could it be? I don't see how it could be anything much. If I "hurt" it or "injured" it working out...I should have noticed something right then, and if not, certainly on Friday morning.

I don't think it's rotator cuff, because a buddy of mine said to hold my left fist against my left nipple and then raise my elbow. (That's what his doc had him do). He said he couldn't do it (pain) and his doc said "oohh...could be rotator cuff).

I can't however reach upward. I can't reach with my left arm to close my door in vehicle. I can ..but its painful. I can't reach forward to grab a pen off my desk.

Ya know what "pec dec" is? Well.. I did "reverse pec dec" (where you force the weight outward rather than inward) on Thursday. When I make that motion now, it hurts like hell....

The pain is not "sore", its more so "sharp" and almost feels like an impingement.

It bothers me that it is a sharp pain and not normal muscle soreness.

What relieves me, is that I didn't have any pain on Thursday or Friday, so ....that tells me it can't be anything major. But why the pain now? I didn't do anything on Saturday or Sunday - other than stand around for 6 hours and coach.

Any ideas other than cancer?

Sarno. Do you have new stress in your life? Perhaps people depending on you?

I'd wait on Pen or Digby. Digby might be the guy though, very athletic.

It could be a rotator cuff tear. The rotator cuff is made up of 4 or so muscles attaching to the scapula at one end and the humerus at the other. An injury to any of these can manifest in different ways. There are self test videos you can check out on YouTube for the different muscles.

I have an impingement in my right shoulder and I'm coming off of a 4 month layoff from lifting. I first hurt it doing dumbbell lifts for rear deltas similar to what you were doing. That hurt pretty bad at first and the pain would bother me at night, unable to sleep. It hurt to pull the seatbelt across, etc. Assuming you don't have a rotator cuff tear and you're dealing solely with an infringement issue, check out the Kelly Starret videos on Youtube

Delts and impingement.

Torn labrum? :dunno:

Actually posty couldve right. Would need an MRI to confirm since its tissue damage and not bone damage. Might need to have an MRI with contrast done but if this is an isolated incident give it a couple days. How is your range of motion? That would need to be evaluated as I cant see it. 15 minutes ice 15 minutes heat 4-5 times a day. No heavy or moderate lifting. Ibuprofen as needed. Follow up with your PCM on getting it examined and possible MRI scheduled if it persists

But wouldn't I have felt SOMETHING when I did it....or at the the LEAST....the next day?

Same with the labrum.

I did military press with dumbbells....and "reverse" pec dec to work rear delts (on Thursday). Ended the workout normal...zero pain, zero pulls, zero anything out of the orinary. Zero pain the next day (Friday).

Today, I couldn't do helium balloons if I tried.

Initially I thought you had delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which occurs a couple days after eccentric exercise, AKA negatives, where resistance is applied during the lengthening of a muscle. But your problems with external rotation sound more like a rotator cuff injury (partial tear or impingement), specifically involving the infraspinatous and/or teres minor muscles. Weakness, as opposed to motion limited by solely by pain, is a key feature suggesting a tear.

You dont need an MRI yet. Rest and give it a few days. Ice and NSAIDS for pain, and look up rotator cuff exercises for rehab.

See its medical advice like this that makes my asking for a medical license to verify (through pm so its not public, even though its something anyone can look up, but whatever Bruce Wayne.) a reasonable request. If for example someone takes this advice and it ends up hurting them, well...

That advice isn’t going to hurt him. Even if he has a full tear (very unlikely), there is no rush for surgery (the treatment of choice).
