ZeroTolerance 584 Posted April 8, 2006 Obviously the Tigers arent a playoff team, but this is easily the best start they've had since...93? Yup, 93. Here's a refresher: 85-77, 4th in AL East Sparky Anderson Mike Illitch's first year Rotation: Mike Moore, John Doherty, David Wells, Bill Gullickson (who is the last 20 game winner for Detroit, though not in 93). Closer: Mike Henneman C: Chad Kreuter/Mickey Tettleton 1B: Cecil Fielder 2B: Lou Whitaker 3B: Travis Fryman SS: Alan Trammell LF: Rob Deer CF: Tony Phillips RF: Dan Gladden DH: Kirk Gibson Team Leaders: BA: Phillips - .313 HR: Tettelton - 32 RBI: Fielder - 117 SB: Phillips - 16 H: Fryman - 182 ERA: Wells - 4.19 W: Doherty - 14 S: Henneman - 24 Fielder and Fryman were All Stars, last time Detroit had two representatives

Ilov80s 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Should I end my baseball hybernation? I'm no bandwagonner. I only follow the Tigers and not rest of MLB at all. Yes, the Tigers are playoff contenders this year. Tonight's game is HUGE. Verlander gets his first start of the year. If this kid can have an impact rookie season, then the Tiger's are going to be scary. kilroy69 1,217 Posted April 8, 2006 This is the first time in years that I think we actually have a team that can contend. I can't wait to go to a game.
yostevo 0 Posted April 8, 2006 Yes, the Tigers are playoff contenders this year. Tiger's are going to be scary. The Tigers have a very talented roster from top to bottom but come on, lets face the reality for a second. We played KC & Texas. Not exactly powerhouse teams. Temper the entusiam just a smidge. We haven't even had a winning season for the last 13 years! Clearly they are better but let's check out the next 7 games vs. Chicago and Cleveland before you start driving the bandwagon. Temper the entusiam just a smidge. Let's talk after the next 7 games vs. Chicago and Cleveland. True but even though the rangers are not the best team they are the best team in terms of putting of runs and we have held the opposing teams to 12 runs in the 4 games while scoring 32 runs. Good ratio so far and if we can get verlander off to a good start and give him some confidance we could have a pretty good staff.
Ilov80s 0 Posted April 8, 2006 We haven't even had a winning season for the last 13 years! We also haven't had a team with 6 all-star caliber players, a solid bullpen, depth at all positions and 3 of the most highly thought of young pitchers in MLB.
yostevo 0 Posted April 8, 2006 We also haven't had a team with 6 all-star caliber players, a solid bullpen, depth at all positions and 3 of the most highly thought of young pitchers in MLB. You can't decide all of the above after 4 games. One step at a time grasshopper. Let's try being above .500 past June 1st before we call them contenders. Ilov80s 0 Posted April 8, 2006 You can't decide all of the above after 4 games. One step at a time grasshopper. Let's try being above .500 past June 1st before we call them contenders. Well Verlander, Tata, and Zumaya are 3 of the most highly regarded young pitchers in baseball. Infante is an exceptional defensive 2B, Thames is a power hitter, and Logan is as fast as they come. Thats good situational depth. Are you telling me Pudge, Maggs, Shelton, Guillen, Bonderman, and Kenny Rogers aren't All Star caliber players?

Are you telling me Pudge, Maggs, Shelton, Guillen, Bonderman, and Kenny Rogers aren't All Star caliber players? What I'm telling you is that the Tigers started the 2004 season 4-0 and 6-2 after 8 games and they finished 72-90. Are they better than that team? Almost certainly. Do they have some nice young talent coupled with potential Allstars? Absolutely. Just don't get carried away yet. They have to put it together for months at a time and not for a week at a time. This team will suffer from growing pains at some point and they have what shapes up to be one of the toughest divisional schedules in baseball to contend with. kraziness 0 Posted April 10, 2006 I really thought you guys were joking... are you seriously talking about them contending for the playoffs? Let alone the pennant?! AT BEST the Tigers are 3rd best in the Central, 5th best in the AL, and that's AT BEST. More than likely they'll finish behind (in no particular order): White Sox Indians Yankees Red Sox A's Angels And probably the Twins and Blue Jays too. You do realize that this isn't the NFL where there's 16 games right? 5-0 in MLB is nothing... especially when you look at the competition. 4-1 for the Indians is a lot more impressive (to me), with wins over Buerle and Johan Santana. And geez 80's, you keep talking about these "top young pitchers" but you're crazy! Most highly considered PROSPECTS, maybe... but don't try to tell me that these guys are considered to be 3 of the most highly considered "young pitchers" when you're in a division with Cliff Lee, Jake Westbrook and CC Sabathia, who've actually PROVED that they can pitch in the majors... and you're list of "All-Star calibre players" is a list of overpriced has-beens and never-wases. Some decent players for sure, but do they compare with the rosters of the above mentioned teams? Not even close.

Maybe you didn't catch his performance Saturday night (7 scoreless innings 2 hits, 2 walks, and 7 Ks) but you'll get plenty of chances to witness his 100 mph fastball and DISGUSTING breaking ball. Heres a little clip of Zumaya's debut Zumaya The Indians are a good young team and this is going to be a real tough division. I am not saying the Tigers are world beaters, but this team is for real. I am warning baseball fans.
kraziness 0 Posted April 10, 2006 roh oh: bitter indian fan sighting. red alert! Not so much bitter, but astounded. I'm not even really looking to talk trash or anything, I just honestly don't see how someone could honestly think the Tigers were a playoff contender. A sleeper team possible of making some noise, maybe, but not a contenda. I also don't see how someone could honestly think that a 4-0 start means anything in baseball. It isn't the 5-1 start, its the talent on the team and the presence of a real leader like Leyland.
