NFL Draft Weekend Team Thread: Green Bay Packers

Recommended Posts

i think any team with a bunch of holes does well to get lots of picks. but as i've mentioned before: the packers are, malcontent or not, getting rid of a guaranteed star player for the uncertainty of draft picks. you still have to make those draft picks count.

unless you're trading a player for another proven player, there's always the risk you end up with nothing if you botch the draft pick(s)

their one pick so far is considered the safest pick (ie least uncertain) in the draft.

Walker really only had one good year, and is coming off a pretty serious injury. I wouldn't say he's a "gauranteed star player".

A offensive tackle.

No clue who the heck that guy is. And an OT? :ninja:

nfldraftcountdown.com

Strengths:

Has a good frame and should be able to add some weight...Is a brilliant pass blocker...Very technically sound...An excellent athlete with great quickness who moves extremely well...Has a nasty demeanor on the field and plays to the whistle...Hard worker who wants to be great...Strong and Explosive...Is a stud in the weight room...Has a lot of experience and consistently grades out very well...Mature with top intangibles...Versatile and can play multiple positions.

Weaknesses:

Needs to add some weight and continue to bulk up for the next level...Must improve as a run blocker...Struggles with massive defenders and can get pushed back...Is still developing and not yet a finished product...Doesn't always play with proper leverage and knee bend...Did not always play against elite competition.

Notes:

Lightly regarded recruit from North Pole, Alaska who entered college at 235 lbs...Very raw coming out of high school and did not play football as a sophomore or junior...Started every game of his college career...Has the physical tools and natural ability to play the critical left tackle position in the pros which is coveted.

8. Daryn Colledge, Boise State (6-4 3/8, 299; 5.05)

Colledge had a complete workout at the Combine. He ran 5.05 in the 40 twice, had a 32½-inch vertical jump, a 9-foot-2 broad jump, 4.63 short shuttle, 7.40 three-cone drill and did 21 lifts. He played high school football in Alaska and also lettered in baseball and track (shot-put). He redshirted in 2001 then started 52 games in a row at left tackle and did not allow a sack after his freshman year. He has long arms (33 inches), but not sure how much more he can weigh above 305. Had a good week at the Senior Bowl on the field. He wasn't so good in the interviews with teams. Like most offensive linemen, he needs to get stronger.

Great pick.

Daryn Colledge, 6-5, 299, Boise State Native of North Pole, Alaska who came to Boise State and has progressively developed into an All-American offensive tackle. Good overall athleticism, though he is not in the rare class of athletes such as McNeill and Winston. Lacks the size potential of the bigger players and thus, many teams see him as a prototype left guard for the next level. Good technique. Uses his hands well to punch the defender at the snap and eases back into position. Matched possible first-round pass rusher Mathias Kiwanuka of Boston College in the MPC Computers Bowl and held Kiwanuka without a tackle for the first half.

He'll be a gaurd.

I think so. It looks like he has very good athleticism, which should help him in the transition.

I hope not. That guy is extremely overrated.

Yes he is. Horrid hands.

Walker had the exact same knock on him when he was drafted. He worked out allright. :first:

I think with the scheme the Pack was trying to implement on the interior, Claridge's athleticism fits perfectly.

Yup. Just what we need too. :first:

Now, I'm curious to see what they do with the next pick. These first two picks are pretty much what I expected (not that I thought it would be Colledge, but an OT/G). I'm thinking TE next, but we'll see.

Cool...good to hear. I'm just glad he's not pigeonholed into being an OT. That's not exactly an area of concern.

3 time WAC T Daryn Colledge, Boise State

I'm going :first:

but TT did that to me last year with the Collins pick. And TT was right then, so...

Some good moves and some that I dont like. In retrospect, they should have kept 36, made the trade for Walker and then taken Chad Jackson and the best olineman on their board. They could have come away with 3 starters and then another 3rd rounder.

Instead, its more of a crapshoot with a bunch of later picks.

Hawk was the best pick for them and they made it. I think they went a little far with the trades though.

I dont really like the overall end result.

Could seem like it. But Bill Walsh used to do this kinda thing. I remember an interview he did where he said in an uncertain draft, you always take quantity over quality. Because quite often the later picks pay off.

any thoughts on possibly Leonard Pope @ #52 ??

I'm really hoping for Javon's replacement who woulda been Terrance Murphy who was picked around this spot last year. Alas, he's injured and hopefully TT just goes ahead and finds another stud WR.

I think it is a deep receiving TE class. I like Pope, and would not be upset if the PAck took him, but I think other solid TE's can be had later.

In a way, I was kinda hoping the Packers would stay put and take Justice. But this Colledge kid doesn't sound so bad. 51 consecutive starts and no sacks allowed after his freshman year. Sounds pretty solid to me.

You thought Collins was the worst pick of the draft last year.

How did that work out?

How do you have any idea at this point if they went a little far with the trades???

You and Sampdog crack me up. :P

Greg Jennings. Well, I wasn't too far off in guessing a TE. Hopefully, Jennings will prove to be another T-Murph selection for TT.

Are you just making this up? I had no opinion whatsoever on Collins last year. After the 1st round talent, I dont follow college at all and dont profess to know these players after pick 35 or so. My opinion was based on adding Jackson, whoever their top lineman was with 36/37. An opinion that your friend Hoffdaddy agreed with.

The Jennings pick doesn't jibe with what they've been preaching about size, so I'm scratching my head there a bit. I like the O lineman though. A good fit for the new blocking scheme.

on Sirius, i think it is Gil Brandt, they said he had around a 4th round grade

might be a bit of a reach but they say he can create after the catch, we will see

The profiles on NFL.com have him as a second rounder, rated as a very good starter. Sounds like he's polished and will be able to contribute right away.

You said terrible pick. Bethune-Cookman College??? The Packers reached terribly... blah, blah, blah.....

I remember it and if I can find it I will bump it. Do you really think it's that far-fetched that you would say the Packers drafted terrible? Why so indignant?

My point is not that you think Packers make terrible moves every draft (when it's impossible to know at this point). I actually like the Packers decisions if you and Sampdog blast them. There's just no objectivity with you guys. It's actually kind of funny :D

Walter is bias yes, but at times is right on point. Swamp is a closet Packer fan that can't bring himself to admit it.

I was getting a little nervous about this huge premium they seemed to be putting on size. Bottom, line you need to be able to stretch the field. I think we have some nice size in Gardner, Fergusen, and Bo and some good quickness in Driver and now Jennings.

Kiper had this guy as a huge sleeper and really liked the pick. I like what I've read... whatever that's worth. I'm just gonna have to trust in Thompson on this one, but my gut reaction is a good one.

I also like that it probably addresses our return game.
