Fizzelps 0 Posted July 28, 2006 Chiefs' Roaf retires By ADAM TEICHER The Kansas City Star RIVER FALLS, Wis. | Tackle Willie Roaf, the foundation of one of the NFL’s best offensive lines, has retired. Roaf wasn’t with the Chiefs when they reported for training camp on Thursday. Roaf told The Kansas City Star this morning by telephone that he had told president/general Carl Peterson and coach Herm Edwards of his plans weeks ago and even sent the Chiefs a letter declaring his intentions. “I guess they want me to reconsider,’’ Roaf told The Star. “I’m solid on retiring and going back to school.’’ Roaf, 36, was emphatic in the spring that he would play this season. But today he said lingering hamstring and knee trouble led to his decision. Roaf missed six games last season because of hamstring problems. He missed half of the 2001 season while playing for New Orleans after tearing knee ligaments. Roaf joined the Chiefs in a trade from the Saints in 2002 and was a major factor in their offensive success. His retirement leaves a significant hole at left tackle. Edwards said Thursday the Chiefs would use Jordan Black at left tackle and Kyle Turley at right tackle when practice begins this afternoon. Roaf played 13 NFL seasons and made the Pro Bowl in all but two of them. Despite playing on only teams to reach the playoffs, Roaf will likely be selected for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. joefry 0 Posted July 28, 2006 Sonofabitch! That takes a little bite out of LJs stock. I don't think it does. LJ had a few great games with Roaf out last year. Also, Everybody has got questions on their line this year. LJ is still top 3. Look at Edge...he has one of the worst lines out there, he is still a top 7 pick. Also, a s a Packer fan, look at Gado last year. Our O line was in tatters, yet he pulled of a couple of 150 yrd games, I wondere how that happened. Oh yeah...I forgot that good running backs can actually break takles and make other guys miss.

JetsFan28 0 Posted July 28, 2006 Wow, that hurts. How's Black as a replacement? I forget if it was WFAN or ESPN Radio but someone said that if there's anybody that can slow down the Kansas City offense, it's Herm Edwards. Good luck Chief fans and LJ owners! Fizzelps 0 Posted July 28, 2006 As a Chiefs fan it was hard news to hear. But, I am hoping that we won't see much change in production due to this. I know there will be some as Roaf was such a great player at his position.

Oh yeah, still Top 3. I had him projected as the clear cut #1. Now I think it's more of a toss-up between him and SA.

Will be asked to stay in and block a lot more. so they lost two starting tackles, the o-cordinator, the head coach and a really good blocking fullback from last year? Am I thinking that right? Maybe L.J. isn't as much of lock as were thinking.

The Moz 71 Posted July 28, 2006 Glad the got Turley at least -- no where Near Roaf but he helps ease a little of the sting as J. Black doesn't suck totally and LJ Didn't do awful w/o Roaf last season. Though this news make sit S. Alexander L. Johnson LT
devildog 0 Posted July 28, 2006 Think you really have to question LJ in dynasty formats as well. Waters is a good young player but that's about it. Shields is 35 years old and will be retiring soon as well. The rest of the line is serviceable at best. This could quickly go from being the best line in the NFL to an average one at best. Guest Black Label Society Posted July 28, 2006 I have to agree with Mozzy. Losing Roaf and Tony Richardson is HUGE. Coupled with the fact that he'll be playing his first FULL season as a starter, I expect that his production will drop significantly.

Game 9- LJ 27 carries for 132 yards. Game 10-LJ 36 carries for 211 yards and 2 TD's. Game 11- LJ 31 carries for 119 yards and 1 TD. Jordan Black was taking Roaf's place in those games. Seems he did quite well. This Roaf retirement could cause such a tremor that by late August, LJ will be a value pick toward the middle to late 1st in redrafts. The first two games were against Buffalo and Houston, the 2 worst run defenses in the NFL last year. Even still his YPC was below his yearly average for those 3 games and his TD average was lower as well.

I've got it LT, SA and LJ. I think that SA's touches will drop a little ... not because of age or anything like that. I think SA's touches will drop a little because Holmgren's faith in Hasselbeck increases a little more each year. Not to mention that Seattle made an improvement to their receiving core by picking up Burelson. Just a hunch, but I don't see Holmgren giving as many touches to SA this year compared to last for fear of SA wearing down and possibly breaking down. Fizzelps 0 Posted July 28, 2006 wow ... this probably won't be a devastating loss to KC, but it's gotta hurt a little. I've got SA and LT tied for #1. I wouldn't think this would drop LJ any lower than #2. I don't see LT outperforming LJ this year.
burdsheet 0 Posted July 28, 2006 I wouldn't think this would drop LJ any lower than #2. I don't see LT outperforming LJ this year. true, this one thing shouldn't drop LJ more than one spot, but someone mentioned that the other guard retired earlier and they lost their blocking FB. I think the combo of these three things pushes LJ down two spots.

I agree that we'll need to curb our enthusiasm for LJ's projections a bit, but it's not the end of the world. Also, I understand that Houston was a bad team last year, but 211 on any NFL team is amazing and not normal. I doubt the Houston defense gave up that many yards to any other RB they played against last year. I know Edge killed them and Alexander put up 4 td's on them WITH THEIR STARTING OL's intact, but nobody put up the yardage LJ did. Over 200 is "big time" no matter what team you're playing. RamslovaMartzhata 3 Posted July 28, 2006 While it is not devastating by any means, anyone who thinks that losing an 11 time pro bowl linemen doesn't matter also needs a reality check. Not to mention Roaf not only will be missed because of his performance on the field, but his leadership on and off it.

Jarvis Basnight 119 Posted July 28, 2006 The news just keeps getting better and better for that week 1 KC matchup with the Bengals. KC will have replacements for a retired Roaf and a holdout Kennison while Cincy will have "The Replacements" (Including Shane Falco at QB) because their QB has a bum leg and the rest of the team's in prison or have court dates. I remember watching that game and kc's line was throwing around houstons d-line like they where a high school team. It actually reminded me of alexanders 4 td game. Its like all these little things have been coming up one at a time with the kc offense this offseason, and you have to think about it when drafting ANY k.c. guys now. I always thought any back would be a stud in the system they have, and the system seems to be slowly falling apart this offseason.

murf74 461 Posted July 28, 2006 Roaf and Richardson are the biggest losses that LJ could have had this offseason. Well those and of course the coaches.

Ahh...fantasy football is in full gear now, lets start overthinking!!!!!!!!!! I have the thrid pick I think I will take DD or Mcgahee over LJ, because he clearly will only score 15 TDs now. How about Lamont J? He lost Gallery and Porter does not want to report, does that make him a third round pick now?
football_scooter 0 Posted July 28, 2006 wow - this is a huge blow to KC. someone said no difference for LJ? I see it as a huge difference. And this also knocks down TGonz stock without Roaf, TG will be blocking a lot more. Arrrgh.
