Spinoff: Biggest athlete bust of all time

Recommended Posts

His performance was only a disappointment to millions of playground players in ghettos everywhere.

I have to say, that might be the best post of yours I've ever seen.

This is pretty much a "modern-era" list of "busts". While I'm not that old, I've always been a fan of sports history and there were lots of major draft mistakes before the era of modern scouting. They used to draft players they'd never seen based on newspaper clippings! There's a great story where racist Redskins owner George Preston Marshall let a newspaperman make a draft selection; the guy picked a player from a traditionally black school and when Marshall found out, the Redskins didn't bring him to camp. Funny part was that the guy was caucasian!

I can think of three #1 overall NFL draft picks who never played a down of NFL football.

1) Jay Berwanger - U of Chicago Heisman Winner selected by the Bears; chose a business career over pro football.

2) Ernie Davis - Heisman Winning RB from Syracuse; tragically died (therefore exempt from this list).

and the winner of this competition should be:

Randy Duncan - University of Iowa QB selected #1 overall by the Packers in the late 1950's. Lombardi cut Duncan in training camp and the guy never played a down of NFL football, though he has had a relatively nice career as a football play-by-play guy on UI radio.

I'll toss out Ron Powlus, only because he was from near my hometown.

Those Olympics commercials, featuring Dan and Dave, in training to compete for the greatest athlete in the world. One guy didn't make the Olympics. The other won a bronze medal.

That was great.

You're right, he was, but most of us Pennsylvanians try not to remind people of that. :(

I almost said Jeff George then I remembered that he did have a couple of decent statistical years in Atlanta.

Ryan Leaf, Akili Smith, Tony Mandarich, Brian Bosworth are all worthy nominees IMO.

Just listening to Thiesman's jock sniffing on ESPN was almost as unbearable as footage of his leg snapping. But an even bigger bust could've been Napoleon McCallum's leg nearly destroyed on nationwide television:

Anyone who watched the Monday Night Football season opener on Sept. 5, 1994 between the Los Angeles Raiders and the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park remembers. 49ers linebacker Ken Norton Jr. tackled McCallum and in the pileup McCallum dislocated his knee, tearing three ligaments, ripping his calf and hamstring muscles from the bone, and incurring nerve and artery damage. In surgery, doctors were concerned that if the operation did not go well, his leg could have to be amputated.

OUCH!

http://media.putfile.com/mccallum I couldn't open this link from my work PC, but it's alleged footage of the injury; it might be outdated.

As a huge Cubs fan, I hate to say it, but Mark Prior and Kerry Wood are working their way towards being mentioned in discussions like this.

Ryan Minor

92-96 OU Sooner

In baseball he played on the college world series champion team

In basketball, he was a 2 time big 8 player of the year

In basketbal, he was a 2nd round pick

In baseball the orioles drafted him out of high school and then out of college to be the Cal Ripken replacement

Well, retired now he proudly reflects on never playing any NBA games and amassing 3 Homers in the Majors with a batting average around .182

Growing up only a 1/2 hour from him, I can remember his team's concession stand tried to sell his autographs for around $35.00 in the early 90s.

Also Matt Millen and Isaiah Thomas took their jobs with alot of hype, say now, How are those guys doin?

I'am going with R. Leaf, never been so much hype for such a tool of a player.

akili smith actually got paid a lot more and did a lot less than Leaf.

but one lockerroom blowup...

Got to go with Ryan Leaf. San Diego had the choice of him and Manning, decided that he was a better QB. Just based on what they passed up to get to him, makes him the biggest bust in my mind.

Len Bias

My hero. Not many people would have the fortitude to chose suicide over selling their soul to the '80s Celtics.

the winner should be wnedell davis a receiver of the bears was playing the iggles at the vet and was running a fly route when all of a sudden his knees exploded and his kneecaps shot into his thighs.
