I agree, it is irresponsible. But, unfortunately, that's what pop culture is all about--pushing the envelope, urging us to think that what was unacceptable or shocking last year is cutting edge and forward-thinking this year. Funny thing about that cutting edge...it's sharp!

A month ago my 10 yr old son had a birthday party. 5 black and 4 white kids by coincidence. They played some game in the pool and instantly set the sides as black vs. white. When one of the white kids stopped playing, the black kids made one of their own join the white team because he was "least black" (actually he is half white).

 

They all go to the same school which is quite diverse. We've never done anything racist or taught anything racist to our kids.

 

It is just human nature to bond with your "tribe."

It's human nature to hang around and want to be with people that are most like you (black table in the cafeteria). That's why I find the whole "be colorblind" thing to be idiotic. People are different and the quicker everyone can realize that being different doesn't mean being any worse or better, the faster we won't have any issues.
