Austrian girl escapes her "master" after 8 years

Recommended Posts

Now thats nuts.

VIENNA (Reuters) - A girl kept captive for eight years in a tiny dungeon was allowed to listen to the radio by her kidnapper who apparently committed suicide after she broke free to make contact with an astonished neighbor.

The disappearance of 10-year-old Natascha Kampusch as she walked to school was one of Austria's most baffling mysteries. Police will interview the young woman later on Thursday when the results of a DNA test are expected to confirm her identity.

A federal police spokesman said it was unclear whether Kampusch, who was recognized by her relatives, had been abused by the 44-year-old man believed to have kidnapped her.

"Her health is okay and mentally she also appears to be okay, at least in the eyes of a layman," said spokesman Armin Halm. "She was not bedraggled."

Kampusch's father, who split from her mother before the kidnapping, said he was "incredibly relieved" at the news of her shock reappearance. She met her mother on Thursday for the first time since 1998.

The family has asked the media to show patience as they get to know each other again.

She escaped on Wednesday afternoon after living under a garage next to the suspected kidnapper's house in Strasshof, a hamlet 25 km (15 miles) outside the capital Vienna, police said.

She showed up in a garden close to the house where she had been kept and identified herself to a neighbor.

Her captor equipped a six-sq-meter cell with running water, toilet, washing facilities, bed, books, radio and occasionally television, police officials said. The room was found tidy.

Kampusch's passport was found in the cellar and the woman bore an identifying scar.

Police said they wanted details of the relationship between Kampusch and the man, given that she appeared to come down with "Stockholm Syndrome," a psychological condition in which long-held captives begin to identify with their captors.

Kampusch's captor had loosened his security measures recently, police said, allowing Kampusch occasional outings in the village with him. "He was not as cautious as he was in the beginning," said chief investigator Nikolaus Koch.

Halm said the house owner, Wolfgang Priklopil, committed suicide on Wednesday evening when he threw himself in front of a commuter train in Vienna while a manhunt for him was underway.

Police found Priklopil's red sports car abandoned in a Vienna parking lot and the key in his pocket after the suicide.

Priklopil, a communications technician, was questioned by police soon after Kampusch's disappearance, just like hundreds of owners of white vans similar to the one witnesses had seen Kampusch get into the day she vanished.

Nah, it's unlikely that a single man would touch a teenage girl he kidnapped and kept locked away for 8 years.

this is what happens when you have countries with strict gun-control laws. If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times:

Guns don't kill people, commuter trains kill people.
