Just joined Netflix

Recommended Posts

I know "we landed on the moon", but I finally signed up for NetFlix. My Que's already full with TV shows like "House". But I could sure use some recommendations. Basically, I haven't seen a movie since "King Kong" - and it'd been a long time before then that I'd seen a movie.

So Geeks - Can you help me fill up my Que with your movie recommendations?

tia.

Most of what I've gotten from Netflix lately has been the suck. I looked forward to "The Sentinel" and it was about as engrossing as a nursing home threesome.

I personally enjoyed "Poseidon" and I might be the only one on earth.

What kind of movies do you like?

ya know - guy stuff.

No: Musicals, foreign films, artsy-fartsy films, films that make you go :ninja: , Chick flicks.

Yes: Action, Sci-Fi, Drama, Comedy

- pretty generic taste I guess.

Rent the Firefly TV series. Only one season. Then rent Serenity, the movie featuring the Firefly cast.

Actually, the best way to get movie ideas is to use netflix. Log on to your account, look up your favorite/least favorite movies, rate them accordingly, and then look at what netflix reccommends you. If you've already seen the recommendations, rate those and refresh.

2nd that, I've gotten some movies I'd never heard of like that(got 42 total in my queue right now). Here are some of the ones I've liked best since I got Netflix:

The Cooler - William H. Macy & Maria Bello

Life as a House - Kevin Kline (Tear jerker, bit I liked it)

Rounders - I know, I'm probably the last one on this whole board to see it B)

Garden State - Natalie Portman

One Last Thing

Sideways - This one is sort of out there, but I thought it was great

My .02

What kind of bush league netflix operation are you running over there? I'm sitting at around 315 deep in my queue.

What ever you do, do not rent Repo Man staring Emilio Esteves. I posted this last week but it needs to be said again. Don't fall in the trap of thinking Navy Seals, Men at Work, and Repo Man will be an awesome way to spend your weekend with your favorite pals Charlie Sheen and Emilio Esteves. While Navy Seals and Men at work do in fact rule, Repo Man was in fact not awesome, I repeat NOT AWESOME.

Hope that helps, your welcome in advance.

Thanks all. Will add to my Q. Firefly (tv and movie) are actually one of the few things I have seen. - Better than most Sci-Fi for sure.

Here's a few from my Q so far:

Cinderella Man - Can 't wait to see this.

House (TV)

Walk the Line

History of violence

Entourage (TV)

Glory Road

Inside Man (reviews?)

Sentinel (reviews?)

Raging Bull (never saw this)

Taxi Driver (ditto)

For TV shows I recommend "Scrubs" , "Arrested Development" and the funniest sitcom ever "Coupling" from the BBC

For movies I recommend:

Man on Fire

Shawshank Redemption

Rounders

And before I get to far, are you just renting or you are *cough* gonna do something in order to keep them like say duplicate?

Nice pickup on Coupling. I agree, prolly the funniest sitcom ever. Totally blew when they tried to do an American version of it, but was focking HIlarious on the BBC.

Forget those poosay gambling movies like "Rounders" ..for a REAL gambling movie check out "California Split"

"California Split is a movie for those people who enjoy an afternoon of drinking. You know the kind of day, where you say to yourself, "Ah, I'll have a couple and then go to dinner." You have a beer at 2:00pm and before you know it, the clock says 4:00am. But that's okay because you've made eight new friends and you're the life of the bar. This movie is always hailed for probably the most honest depiction of gambling addiction to be commited to film. What no one ever mentions is how honest it is in showing what it's like to get drunk and just hang out with a friend."

Also check out "Hard Eight"

"Five Easy Pieces" is great as well

Yeah, the took a completely non-PC brittish show and turned it into a PC american show.. it flopped after what, 3 episodes? It didn't help at all that it was the exact same episodes just watered down.

but the worst part was the BBC one, after Richard Coyle left so he wouldn't be "typecast" as the goofy guy for future opportunities. They replaced him with a goofy other dude, not the same character which was good, but a new character in season 4, and it just didn't work. We had to rely on patrick picking up the slack, which he did nicely, but Jeff was sorely missed

History of Violence is the most god awful piece of crap ever created. And I'm trying to be nice.

Inside Man is well worth a rental. Denzel and Clive Owens deliver the goods.

Only recommendation I can think of right now that never quite made it to the mainstream is Equilibrium. It stars Christian Bale, Emily Watson, and Taye Diggs. It's a sci-fi/action movie that deals with a post-WWIII society that represses emotion to prevent violence. It's not the most original storyline but the movie is exceptionally well done and well acted...and the action scenes are pretty damn cool. :o
