Liberals reject call for $10/hr. minimum wage

Recommended Posts

;) Raising the minimum wage to $10 would hurt more poor people than it would help because employers would have to cut staff, Finance Minister Greg Sorbara said yesterday.

The comments came as New Democrat MPP Cheri Di Novo (Parkdale-High Park) introduced a private member's bill calling for the minimum wage to be increased to $10 after about 150 anti-poverty activists rallied in the pouring rain outside the Legislature.

But the proposed increase is too expensive for employers to swallow with Ontario's minimum hourly wage of $7.75 already scheduled to rise to $8 next Feb. 1, said Sorbara.

Could someone send us some Canadian liberals to explain this to Oregon liberals. :P

The minimum in this country should be no less than $14.00 an hour.

Your reading and spelling appears to work well enough. I think you should work on comprehension skills a bit more. <_<

There are always going to be a certain percentage of people who are poor. It's called an education, most of the time the government will give money to poor people to get one. Education = higher wage.

No. My parent's made too much money. I could have gotten loans but I could not even get subsidized loans. My parents didn't even make all that much but it was still too much for any real help.

ETA: I am retarded. I was just thinking about college. The govt did pay for my schooling up until college.

Dude, I'm talking K-12. Just a high school education makes you more money than not. Higher education is a choice people make. Whether the gov't should pay for that or not is another debate. However, most states do offer subsidized higher education, regardless of income level.

There can only be so many doctors and so many lawyers. People still need to flip burgers. Those people are still entitled to earn a living wage.

And I have my degree thank you very much.

I was just going to say it's in Canadian dollars, so that's only like 5 bucks an hour American. B)

That's what teenagers are for. They have crappy, minimum wage jobs to give them some spending money, while they finish their education.

speaking about U.S.

The minimum wage needs to be cut in half at least. A lower minimum wage means lower prices, more incentive to get educated, less incentive to immigrate, and less incentive to send production and services overseas.

Obviously, politically, it can't be done, but there should be like a 10-year freeze on the minimum wage. Again, can't be done because no politician could stand the backlash from supposedly 'screwing the poor.'

The way it should work: the free education gives existing citizens every opportunity to make a good living, well above min.wage. It's the 'land of the free' so if you choose to not take advantage, so be it. A low minimum wage allows immigrants looking for a better life for them and their children the opportunity to come to the 'land of opportunity', bust their arses, and live an ok life while setting up their descendents to prosper.

Social programs and a high minimum wage screw up the whole thing.

:dunno: Exactly. That's why they're referred to in many circles as "transitional jobs". If the job you're doing can just as competently be done by a 16 year old high school student there's something wrong with your job and it's probably not deserving of a huge amount of money. I laugh my A$$ off every time I go through the drive thru and there's some 40 year old dude handing me my Big Mac. Seriously, how can you be 40 and work at a drive thru?

I couldn't afford it. But if you take loans and work during college and do not go to a Private School, anyone can make it work.

It takes a little effort.

:dunno: One of my best friends worked at UPS for his entire college career. Worked like 12 midnight to 6 AM unloading and loading trucks. Had to take a year off from college when funds were a little tight but other than that he financed his whole way through college. He makes an excellent living now. He didn't live at home either. And he had enough spending cash to be in a fraternity, go out partying with us every weekend, etc....The idea that unless someone pays for your college you can't afford it is a cop out.

You're right. but cyric here said the gubment will pay for your schooling. Which is a lie. I never said you couldn't get loans. If I were black the gubment would have paid for me to go to college, I'm white so they didn't.

Ok cyric, you're right once again. If the gubment didn't exist on taxes, they would pay for public school out of their own pockets. :dunno:

They're performing a job that a monkey could do. I think 7.50 an hour (or whatever minimum wage) is more then sufficient for somebody with no real skillset.

Flipping burgers and mowing lawns were jobs originally staffed, and intended for, kids in high school. The influx of illegal aliens, crackheads, and just general wastes of space is what put the negative stigma on these jobs resulting in high school kids not wanting to do them. Where there is a dollar to be made there is always someone with no skillset or education to perform said task.

Why reward them for being stupid?

You want to reward them by using my tax dollars for welfare and social services. What's the difference?

What are you talking about? My belief that EVERYONE is entitled to free healthcare and food on their table has no correlation with how much money someone should be paid for remedial work. By paying these people more money to do jobs that require no skill all we're doing is shifting one problem to another. BY raising minimum wage employers will be forced to hire less employees resulting in more people on welfare. What we should be doing is offering more publicly funded education problems so these people can actually learn a skill that will enable them to get a higher paying job. Then the 16 year old kids can go back to flip burgers and mowing lawns for 7 bucks an hour.

I wasn't thinking about the exchange rate at first. Their minimum wage is still higher than ours even with the exchange. It comes out to $6 US something right now and will be $7 US after it goes up to $8 canadian later.

What the hell makes you think a lower minimum wage means lower prices? Unless you're talking about things like macaroni and cheese.

Also, the federal minimum wage hasn't changed in 9 years.

You mean some guy who dropped out of high school so he could smoke weed with his friends is entitled to free health care?

No one is entitled to ANYTHING. You want health care. Get a focking job and pay for it yourself. You want to eat? Get a focking job and pay for it yourself. HTFH.

I couldn't disagree more. Who are we as human beings to deny anyone the right to live. The lack of socialized medicine is one of the major flaws with the USA. Privatized medicine is a big f'ing joke making the rich richer while killing thousands upon thousands of innocent people (especially children and the elderly). We have food rotting away in refrigerators and cabinets across the country. We donate billions of dollars in food and medicine as foreign aid to other countries. Why can't we offer these same things to the people of our own land?

So you think we should deny food, medicine, and civil services to everyone in need? Where do you think all of these people are going to go or do if we do that? They're not going to go "oh well I can't feed my kids, get my HIV meds, or have a roof over my head so I'm going to go find a job". They're going to end up on the streets, stealing and begging to make a buck. Their children are going to grow up with no education or hope for any kind of future, further propagating the problem. I'd rather have a few bucks taken out of every paycheck to help these people then to have them stealing my stereo to feed their kids. I understand that not everyone is born with the same oppurtuninties a guy from a white upper middle class family like myself has. Alot of these people are products of generations of uneducated poor parents and grandparents. We're also not just talking about the crackhead down the street either. We're talking about children, the elderly, disabled, etc, etc. People aren't just some expendable piece of trash that we can just throw away and forget about. It's our duty as members of society and the human race to lend a hand to our fellow man and show a little empathy for the plight of others ffs.

It's so funny that almost daily I read all this rhetoric like "The people or Iraq are better of because we got rid of the horrible Saddam Hussein", "god bless our troops", "my prayers are with you", etc. etc. If any of you were really the good hearted loving Christians you claim to be, you'ld be ashamed of this crap you spew from your pieholes. Absolutely embarrassing...
