Terrell Davis HOF worthy

An MVP, 2000 yd season, Two Rings, Super Bowl MVP

My opinion is this: I think Sayers is a no brainer HOFer. For the short time he was dominate in all aspects of the game.

Campbell was dominate as well and although his numbers don't show it, he was one man wrecking crew.

Now there is TD. He put up 4 1000 yd seasons to start his career. The playoffs is where TD made his name. Much like Irvin was credited for his nice post season numbers, Terrell is (arguably) the best post season rb ever. In 9 playoff games he posted 8 100 yd games and scored at least one TD in every game but one.

TD had a short career just like Sayers. I know the times are different, but the bottom line is TD was just as impressive as Sayers was for their short careers.

Well, I'll get off my Terrell Davis soapbox now, he should be in!

TD was NOT as impressive as Gale Sayers. :dunno: That being said, I think he's hall of fame worthy but I doubt he ever gets in. He's in my personel Fantasy Football Hall of fame for the 3 fantastic years he gave me. That make you feel better? :pointstosky:

He was a first ballot HOF'er in My long standing Dynasty League as well... Even though the SOB cost me Fantasy Bowl VI when he was egged in the Bowl... :dunno:

The precedent has been set with Sayers being voted into the HOF after his brief career, so the mere fact that critics of Terrell Davis' HOF chances point to his 7 year career not being long enough is a joke.

I've since heard people say, well, that was then, this is now. If the criteria for HOF voting has changed since Sayers was selected, then the process is flawed to begin with. HOF worthy is HOF worthy -- if it's 1976 or 2056.

TD was head and shoulders above the rest when he was healthy. There wasn't anyone better. It's a shame his career ended so early.

I think maybe the voters feel he was a product of the system. After he left, scrubs like Olandis Gary and Mike Anderson were able to have monster seasons behind that offensive line. Just a theory.

Not even close..... Im tired of the HOF being for 3-4 year wonders that dont play long enough and then have to play the "If I didnt get hurt" card or whatever BS they come up with. To focking bad. Longevity is a HOF quality and Terell Davis is a 3-4 year wonder on a team that most special olympians could have run for. Freegin joke....

If I didnt get hurt, If my knee didnt give out..... Yeah well If my Aunt had balls she would be my Uncle.

Terrell Davis isnt even remotely close to being a HOFer. Of course neither is Lynn "DO NOTHING" Swann but hes in so ya never know....

I definitly understand your point. I don't like playing the "if" game either. However, I didin't use the if word in my argument for TD being in the HOF. I simply think he did enough in his short career to get in. Yes, players have run for 1000 yds in that system, but none have run for 2000 and won two Super Bowls either. He definitly had a better qb....Elway>Plummer/Griese....but he was simply a monster during his tenure in the NFL.

Like you stated Lynn Swann doesn't have career stats to be in the HOF. What he does have is an impressive post season record and amazing plays. TD has the same thing, better regular season numbers, but he lacks the two rings.

I can see why some would have him out, but I think he did enough to get in. Maybe it's because I'm a diehard Broncos fan and I'm blinded by "biasism"...lol....who knows?

I'm OK with T. Davis getting in as long as Sterling Sharpe and Bo Jackson get in too.

You have to draw the line somewhere, and I think TD comes up short. You never know though. I did not think Thomas would ever get in and he rushed for over 12000 yards, played in 4 SBs and was a league MVP.

Others that I think will be on the edge as well are Edge, Dillon, Ricky Waters, Eddie George, Priest Holmes and Jamal Lewis. All good players, even electrifing at times, but HOF worthy? Only time will tell.

Had it not been for O. Gary, Mike Anderson, and some other no-name running backs looking like T. Davis clones, he may have gotten in. When every guy you put behind the same line runs for 1,000 + yards, it's really hard to claim that running back is HOF worthy.

Sponge worthy? That's up to Elaine. HOF worthy? No.

He didnt have the longevity to be considered a HOF'er. sorry, i have spoken.

I must admit, I was stunned when I saw how sick Davis' playoff stats are. That being said, Jamal Lewis' regular season stats aren't all that dissimilar to Davis'. Maybe I'm overanalyzing, but would letting Davis in open the door to letting Lewis (and whoever else has three or four great years) in?

Sigh....to tell you the truth, I see the arguments both sides are making, and I'm glad the decision isn't up to me.

Problem with that argument is that TD ran for 2000yds behind that line. His postseason stats were also fantastic. Holds the record of 7 consecutive 100 yrd games. Has the highest career rushing avg in the playoffs too. He was better the bigger the game. You have a problem with longevity I can understand it but when he was healthy you could also argue he was one of the best ever. Question - Is Montana talked about being the best QB ever because of his longevity or by stepping up in big games and winning Superbowls?

longevity???

Where in the laws/rules of the HOF does it say anything about longevity?

On a side note its the Pro Football Hall of Fame not the NFL. So should Herschel Walker be considered for his USFL time as well as his NFL time?

This is the Truth that should keep TD out of the Hall.

A solid player who elevated Elway to championship staus after #7's talent was gone. But, unfortunately, his nice stats were mirrored by every other Tom, D1ck and Olandis.

USFL - In 1983, ran for league-high 1,812 yards on 412 carries with 17 TDs. All-USFL RB in '83 for the league and Sporting News. In 1984, rushed for 1,339 yards on 293 attempts and 16 touchdowns. The MVP in '85 by the league and Sporting News. Has an pro football record 2,411 yards on 438 carries with 21 tds.

I've often wondered that as well.

Doug Flutie should be a first ballot HOFer. He won a USFL title and 100 Gray Cups and MVP in Canada (the NFL JV league).

I really don't think Flutie will get in, but if it was truely a "Pro Football Hall of Fame" he would get in easily.

The day he gets in they better put my boy Donnie Baseball in the baseball HoF.. Sad thing is they were both great, just not great for long enough..

Some have said TD was "THE" dominant RB in the NFL during his run.. That isn't the case though, I never considered TD a better back then Sanders or Smith.. I wouldn't even put him in the same discussion, that may even be a big reason why he isn't being considered atm..

How about Kurt Warner then, his first three years were pretty incredible. 3 pro bowls, two SBs with one win, SB MVP, 2 time league MVP, etc.. I think the length of the carreer has to play a part or you could pick out a lot of players "good" years to make a case.

I believe the goal of a football team and player is to win the Super Bowl. And I personally weight that very heavily in HOF. TD gained 1,750 and 2008 rushing yds in the 2 years his team won the Super Bowl. He also had 9 TDS in the two Super Bowl playoff runs. He has the same number of Super Bowl rings as John Elway, who would probably have 0 if not for TD. I personnally would put him in HOF even if his career was only two years long as long as those two years were 1997 and 1998.

Comparables in the HOF just dont work. How many WRs have better numbers than Lynn Swann? 800 maybe?

Also, how much better was Terrell than others of his day? Stats are different in different eras. Barry also rushed for 2000 yds and then Jamal L did, so not to diminish the accomplishment, but it was easier in the late 90s to current day than it was back then

Davis' 2000 yd year was ahead of jamal Anderson at 1846. Not a huge gap.

Campbell's 1934 season was ahead of payton's 1460 - a larger margin.

Sayers 867 yds in 1965 was 2nd in the league.

Top 10 finishes in major categorys:

Sayers

Rushes: 1965-7, 1966-3, 1967-7, 1969-1

Rushing yards: 1965-2, 1966-1, 1967-3, 1968-5, 1969-1

Rushing TDs: 1965-2, 1966-2t, 1967-4, 1969-3t

Yards from scrimmage: 1965-3, 1966-1, 1969-4

Rush/Receive TDs: 1965-2, 1966-6t

Campbell

Rushes: 1978-3, 1979-2, 1980-1, 1981-2, 1982-7, 1983-5

Rushing yards: 1978-1, 1979-1, 1980-1, 1981-5t, 1983-7

Rushing TDs: 1978-2, 1979-1, 1980-1t, 1981-7t, 1983-5t

Yards from scrimmage: 1978-4, 1979-4, 1980-1, 1983-10

Rush/Receive TDs: 1978-2t, 1979-1, 1980-2t, 1983-8t

Davis

Rushes: 1996-3, 1997-2, 1998-2

Rushing yards: 1995-9, 1996-2, 1997-2, 1998-1

Rushing TDs: 1996-3t, 1997-1t, 1998-1

Yards from scrimmage: 1996-2, 1997-2, 1998-2

Rush/Receive TDs: 1996-3t, 1997-2, 1998-1

When looked at against contemporaries, Davis is slightly less impressive.

I'm not for or against Davis, but the comparisons number to number are flawed. He is borderline and I would lean towards no.

You forgot to stack TD's post season numbers up against those guys. Helk, you can put his post season numbers up against anybody you want. TD will crush anybody.

true, I did omit that and it shouldnt be. His post season is spectacular.

3 great years and 1 good one though is his legacy.

3 great years and 1 good one though is his legacy.

That can be said for a vast majority of players in the HOF. Using that logic, Davis is only 2 or 3 average seasons short of being a rock-solid selection.

Like I stated earlier in the thread, the argument of Davis' brief career being a hindrance goes against the selection of Sayers, Swann and I'm sure a host of others.

The criteria that was used to select those players should be used to select TD. And if someone wants to say it's a different era and voting criteria has changed, that logic flies in the face of the HOF's credibility.

TD is a HOF. And I'll say this: Davis was as good a HOF RB as Troy Aikman was a HOF QB....that much is true.

right or wrong, I think this is a fact and the selection committee has questionable credibility.

In the 60s, Sayers was top 3 or 4 all time. Now, 30+ yrs later, where does he rank? 10th maybe?

If davis is in, what about priest?

If davis is in, what about priest?

The difference between those two is TD led his team to two Super Bowl champions, and had one of the best post season performances during that run than any RB in history.

Six in one hand, half a dozen in the other. :ninja:

I personally fell you should play at least 10 years and be in the top of your peers. I mean it's the Hall Of Fame, let's just don't open the doors for anybody to get in even though they may have had some good years and suffered a career ending injury.
