rallo 136 Posted August 29, 2007 and for the record i think sampras winning 7 out of 8 is more impressive than federer winning 5 in a row
mayhem39 3 Posted August 30, 2007 So I was watching the Federer match last night against some no-name. I don't see what's so great about him. Does anybody serve and attack the net anymore in this game? I don't think I saw it once last night. Has tennis just become who can hit it the hardest? It seems to me they just stand back at the baseline and see which guy can knock the cover off the ball. It's about as exciting as watching paint dry.......the sport sure isn't what it used to be. rallo 136 Posted August 31, 2007 Hey Ed...it doesnt help...please elaborate. i'll take a guess... from what i've seen roddick hits the ball the hardest by far... i think he even holds the record for fastest serve..... something rediculous like 150 mph... yet... he sucks... federer doesn't hit the ball as hard as roddick or others... but is by far the best *cliffnotes*

edjr 6,580 Posted August 31, 2007 Am I wrong? Im watching tonight also...nobody attacks the net anymore. Of course no one attacks the net anymore. The equipment has changed and the players hit the ball to hard.

Rybo5 0 Posted August 31, 2007 Of course you shouldn't go too crazy about this not coming to the net thing. Yes there are few true serve and volleyers(sp?), but it's not like the players never come to the net.
edjr 6,580 Posted August 31, 2007 Exactly..... Same reason they lengthen golf courses. THE EQUIPMENT HAS CHANGED!
Rybo5 0 Posted August 31, 2007 Same reason they lengthen golf courses. THE EQUIPMENT HAS CHANGED! I think more players today are more physically fit/stronger as well.
edjr 6,580 Posted August 31, 2007 I think more players today are more physically fit/stronger as well. Naturally. Look at Golf. People WORK out to play golf (and do steroids, see Gary Player's comments)
mayhem39 3 Posted August 31, 2007 Of course you shouldn't go too crazy about this not coming to the net thing. Yes there are few true serve and volleyers(sp?), but it's not like the players never come to the net. I realize that. My point is that nobody attacks anymore. There aren't any contrasting styles of play. I think it's hurt the game.
jerryskids 6,792 Posted August 31, 2007 Or could it be that Federer is that good. and that Tiger can't hit a freakin' fairway in stretches of his career? No wonder he bagged the driver several times. Inconsistent maybe? rallo tried admirably to make his point. I know you used to play competitive tennis, but in this argument, you are just being obtuse. Me_2006 14 Posted March 3, 2008 When this thread was made it was true. Now? not so much. Woods has been the best golfer in the world for almost 10 years. For about the last 7-8 he's been nothing short of dominant. I don't think it's ever been true that Federer>Woods. He had a great run and all, but in 2 years there will be a new Federer and Woods will be casting shadows over every golfing record in existence.

edjr 6,580 Posted June 5, 2008 I just found out Federer had Mono at the end of last year and into this year. hence his horrible showing in some tournies, including the Australian Open. Even so, a healthy Federer has no chance to beat Nadal at the French. Unless Federer comes into net a lot, but he never has before, why would he change now? I'm almost hoping Nadal wins 7 French Opens in a row and then retires.

edjr 6,580 Posted June 8, 2008 I was so amped up to watch the French final this morning. Nadal is just such a beast, it's really unfair. On clay, the man is doing things that have never been done before. If not for Nadal, Federer would have won the grand slam 3 times!!! Be nice if Nadal can start winning on hard court and grass. He lost to Federer in the finals of Wimbledon last year. Maybe this is his year to unseat Federer at the #1 in the world.
GettnHuge 2 Posted June 8, 2008 Not much ammo left to use against Tiger but I suppose you could talk about Romo breaking a hunnert at Torrey Pines. Justin Timberlake as well.

Rybo5 0 Posted June 8, 2008 There are very few sports feats currently more difficult than beating Nadal at Roland Garros. I wonder if he's lost 3 sets on clay yet in his pro career.

I wonder if he's lost 3 sets on clay yet in his pro career. he has NEVER lost 2 sets in the same match at the French. His serve was broken 9 times in 8 matches this year He broke the other guys serve over 60% of the time this year. The guy is just a freak.

His serve was broken 9 times in 8 matches this year He broke the other guys serve over 60% of the time this year. The guy is just a freak. he IS..ive seen nadal on the practice courts at the us open and i swear, he hits practice shots as hard as in a match..so much top spin on that 2 hander..and being one of the few lefties helps... mcenroe joked about doubling up with borg..id love to see it..with doubles, u can get away with not running a ton..but they are both in great shape and still quick..what a draw that would be... i wonder if golf will ever get 2 incredible threats like the men have with djokovic and nadal?...and i like this period..everyone gets nadal crazy..im still putting cash on feds on the grass at wimbledon.... ana ivanovic makes it move in my shorts but i am fearful that this is the end of me seeing her on the smaller courts..id use my pics of her as my avatar but tdz isnt down with the avatars any mo and how can woods be better than federer? he isnt going to stay as healthy as he used to..and its starting to show more and more..has woods played this year?.. edjr 6,580 Posted January 29, 2009 all the girlies in the club go bump, bump, bump. Federer had Mono for the 1st few months of 2008 and still managed to make the semin finals in every tournament, winning the US open. 19 tournies in a row he has made the semi-finals In the finals at the Aussie Open this weekend.
