What do you do with your grass

Some folks don't bag it, which is fine I guess. But I like to bag it up, and toss it. Problem is, our focking garbage men/company won't take it. Why I have no idea. They'll throw all sort of non bio-degradeable crap into the landfill, but not grass....something "of the earth". Anyway's, what do you do? Burn it? Does your garbage guys haul it away?

The garbage companies will haul mine away for an extra $9 a month, but i have to use those special bags. I'm too cheap to do that, so I spread it behind some bushes in an area of my backyard that is not used. It's usually gone by the beginning of the next season if I spread it as thin as possible. If you mound it, it attracts mosquitos and never goes away.

We have a recycle bin for "greenery." Grass, leaves, tree branches, etc...all goes in there and they pick it up every other week.

Grass clippings actually function as a lawn fertilizer, so that is why I wouldn't bag them.

 

But if you do bag them, than maybe you could pile them up in a drum and mix it once a month.

Doing that will turn it into great mulch/compost for your flower/plant beddings.

Usually it will say 3-1 right on the mower.

 

The 3 is for...Bag,Mulch and side discharge. The 1 is your mower.

 

If it's not a mulching mower than maybe you'll want to go and buy one that is. Figure $230 and up for a decent mulching mower.

It doesn't have anything on the sides to attach a bag to, but it has something in the back that a bag attaches to. But you have to lift a metal plate or soemthing up to attach it.

Take the blade off and take it to a hardware store. It probably needs sharpening anyway. Ask them if it is a mulching blade. If not, buy one. Have them sharpen the blade you brought. Reinstall the mulching blade. When cutting, make sure there is a plug covering the spot where your mower shoots out the grass that has been cut. Make sure you cut no more than a half inch off the top.

 

No more worries about bagging grass.

One other thing I would do is buy a 2nd set of blades. This way when it is time to change the blades you'll always have a sharp set to put on. After switching them just go have the ones you took off sharpend.

That thing you are talking about will look like a plastic ramp. It will usually fit in sideways to block/plug the hole so the grass wont shoot back at you. The metel plate attached to the mower covers that plastic piece to keep it in place.

If this is a Craftsman mower, just go to Sears with your mower model number.

The metal plate is there so that it will keep the plastic plug thing in place.

 

You try mowing your lawn and I'm almost positive that your grass will be coming out of that plate.

 

There is one other thing you could do to keep the metal plate secure.

Use Duct tape.

I used to do all of the yard work, then my wife got cleaning ladies for inside the house (no can sizes worth recalling). After a while she felt guilty and started pushing me to have someone do the yardwork. I finally did.

 

Fast forward, we move to a new house with a much bigger yard, we still have both services. Then we end up without the cleaning ladies (basically they stopped covering our neighborhood and we never replaced them).

 

I wonder if at some point I should bring this full circle and feel guilty about not doing the yard work. Nah...

If you look above the metal plate on either side of the mower you should see 2 things that look like metal curls. They usually curve up. That is where your bag will be hooking onto. And the opening part of your bag should be up against the hole in the back of the mower. Your metal plate will rest ontop of your bag attachment. But you have to lift it up to do so.

Yeah, I was thinking of doing just that....to test it. But when I bag it the clippings are kinda large, but I guess that's because the grass was like a foot high the first time I cut it this year.

I usually only bag when:

- first cutting of the year and I am de-thatching

- we are having an outside party and people don't want grass clippings on them

- I have not mowed in a while and mulching would cause large clumps on the grass

- end of the year and I am de-thatching

 

In those cases, I have a large pile at the back of my property in the woods that I dump those clippings. It decomposes (eventually).

 

All other times, I mulch. It requires less fertilizer when you mulch and it requires you to mow more often, which is healthier for the grass.
