ANOTHER DEFENSIVE END? :ninja: I thought Greg Ellis was healthy! Not saying he isn't but I don't get this pick. Or are they going play Ellis at OLB?

We gave up Cleveland's second rounder, the #36 overall.

LOVE the pick, but this was the guy I wanted all along.

You can't have enough guys who can get after the QB. You look at San Diego's defensive secondary last year, and they were average at best talent-wise. However, they had guys like Merriman and Phillips and Foley bringing pressure, and suddenly the pass defense seemed fine.

problem is we can't play 13 guys on defense! we fockin traded up to get a guy at a position we're loaded at!

That's stupid. The last thing we need is another LB/DE. We got Ware, Carpenter, Adoyle, James, Ellis, Burnett... :ninja:

Ellis might not ever be the same again. I certainly hope he comes back 100% because he is a solid player and a stand-up person, but there is no guarantee. Even if he is fully healthy, he is not getting any younger and what would be the harm in resting him every now and again? Ware and Ellis are the only two players in that list of LBs that I have any faith in getting to the QB. We were absolutely destroyed in the stretch run last season, and especially by RBs out of the backfield.

Burnett has been a bust, plain and simple. Other than being a high second round pick, he has done nothing else to even be considered in the discussion. Carpenter will likely be moved inside, where he can replace James, who was awful the last half of the season.

Back in the Super Bowl years we had 5 or 6 DTs who would shuttle in and out of the lineup. Depth allowed players to stay fresh, and versatlilty allowed creative schemes. I can see instances where we go 4-3 on 3rd and longs, putting Ware and Spencer at rush end with Spears and Canty/Hatcher inside.

I would say Ware Ayodele Carpenter Ellis would be the opening day starters, with Spencer playing a heavy role in pass rush situations, and James and Burnett providing depth. Seems like an excellent situation to me.

I feel a great deal better about our prospects on fielding an aggressive, attacking defense with the addition of Spencer. I would not have had such confidence if we had not addressed our need for another pass rusher.

I don't feel that a CB or S would have had a similar impact on our defense.

I've read some places that thought Spencer would be there at 36. That wasn't happening. Dallas got a good player to put on the outside opposite of Demarcus Ware. Our defense, assuming Ken Hamlin fills in nicely at free safety, should be pretty solid.

I would like to see a wide receiver, but that's not looking to promising now, unless they grab a Steve Smith or Anthony Gonzalez in Round 2.

What about Jarrett?

What, does DAL have like 15 picks now?

Don't forget they gave three to the Eagals. :dunno:

They should have just picked Eric Wright (who cares if he had a bunch of ecstasy pills, rape accusations (think they were dropped). He's an incredible talent and the Cowboys could use a young stud corner back. Are we going to pick any players!?!??! :dunno:

Derek Ross and Antonio Bryant were players with incredible talent as well. Considering the player conduct policy and the new commish coming down hard on players with off-field issues, I would just as soon pass on a guy who can't be counted on.

A DB like Marcus McCauley or WR like Jason Hill will be available at the top of the 3rd.

dallas is going to be  when they realize romo can't get it done and they traded away quinn.

If Quinn turns out to be the next Montanna then they probably regret it on some level anyway. But as it stands today Dallas hit the lottery on this trade. They get what is probably going to be a top ten pick next season and could very well be top three pick next season and they only moved down a few spots. This is one of the most lopsided trades in recent history at least on the surface. What you made has to be one of the most ignorant statements of all time.

Agreed 100%. Before Ellis went down Dallas had one of the most effective defenses in the league. When he did go down they couldn't produce a pass rush without sending the house. This exposed a supposed weakness in the secondary. But the fact is that the secondary didn't change, the pass rush fell off the map. The problem wasn't in the secondary as most "analysts" would have you believe as it was in the lack of a pass rush by the base unit. Any secondary will get burned given enough time.

This was a good trade for Dallas but let's not get carried away here.

So in the two trades, the Cowboys move down four spots and give up a 3rd and 5th for next year's first? The Browns were DYING to make a trade for the 1.22 pick, what with KC ready to take Quinn at 1.23 - they were fish over a barrel. I think the Cowboys let them off easy. :wall:

However, I like that they tried to address their biggest needs - defense, defense, defense.

they got who they were planning to draft at 22 anyway, so they gave up a 3rd and a 5th for what will probably be a top 5 pick next year. look at the draft value chart and do the math.

can you think of any case in draft history where a team got a high 1st for a 3rd and a 5th? of course, the football results all depend on how the players develop, but from a pure dealmaking perspective, this is one of the best draft day moves ever made. the superlatives are not out of line.

Your whole premise is based on assumptions. Assuming you will be getting top 5 pick is your first mistake. What if Brady Quinn turns out to be the next Tom Brady and Dallas' draft pick does not pan out? It could turn out to be a great trade for Cleveland. I will repeat this is a good trade for Dallas, we won't know if it is great for years.

The Dallas trade with the Browns had great value for the Cowboys, so they had to do it.

Since the Browns have been back in the league(1999), they have drafted in the top 3, 4 times, in the top 10, 1 time, and in the top 20, 2 times. So as you can see, the Cowboys have a great chance at 1 extra top 20 draft pick, to go along with their own #1 pick next season. They had to pass on Quinn, to gain this extra #1 draft pick in 2008.

are you deliberately being obtuse? i repeat--from the dealmaking perspective, the cowboys gaining a 1st round pick in exchange for a 3rd and a 5th is an extraordinary feat, regardless of the quality of player they gain. once again, do the math. you understand the difference between quantitative and qualitative, right? after all, most kids figure that out in grade school.

i'll use small words here: look up the lowest score for a 1st round pick, then compare that to the score for any 3rd plus any 5th. then subtract the two.

you've obviously never run a business.

Yup Dallas made a heck of a deal, got the guy they wanted and will have 2 very high #1s next year.

i obviously love the trade and i equally love the spencer pick. this team has not had a serious/nasty pass rush since jimmy's 90's cowboys. and i'd say wade knows a thing or two about putting pressure on the qb and the personnel it take to do so. the word at valley ranch is that everybody on the defensive side of the ball is giddy that parcells and his conservative style ball is gone - they are busting at the seams to play in wade's aggresive style scheme. spencer will play opposite ware on the outside, at 270 lbs - he's got the potential to be a beast.

to be fair, i thought our 4th round pick sucked ass. would much rather of had the 340 lbs nose guard from utah. the combo of glenn, TO, crayton and co. should be enough. :dunno:

I am down with that brother. I love this great move crap. They need help now not next year. That defense was getting toasted at the end of the year last year and the offense was looking good either. I mean Romo's performance was horrible down the stretch. I think it will be nice to have two good picks next year like you said high first round picks becuase Dallas will probably step back this year if that is possilbe in the NFC.

You also have to remember with the idiot in the war room who is to say he won't trade the picks. We shall see.
