Clinton Portis defends dog fighting

Recommended Posts

ORTIS SUPPORTS VICK

Redskins running back Clinton Portis and left tackle Chris Samuels have spoken out in support of Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who currently is caught up in a dog-fighting investigation.

But they're not saying that Vick is innocent. Per Portis, it's no big deal if Vick is guilty.

"I don't know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it's his property, it's his dog," Portis told WAVY-TV. "If that's what he wants to do, do it."

As Portis spoke, Samuels started laughing, and at one point raised his eyebrows with (as we interpret it) an "oh sh-t I can't believe he's saying this" look on his face.

"I think people should mind their business," Portis added.

In response to the question of whether dog-fighting is prevalent in the NFL and the NBA, Portis said, "I mean it's prevalent in life. . . . I'm from Laurel, Mississippi. I know a lot of back roads that got the dog fight if you want to go see it."

Um, we're not licensed to practice law in Virginia, but we don't think that the Commonwealth has formally recognized the defenses of "everybody does it" or "if it's behind closed doors, it's okay."

And if we didn't know better (and, actually, we don't), we'd be inclined to wonder whether Portis has been to a few of those dog fights in Laurel, Mississippi.

Or in Surry County, Virginia.

And Clinton's comments provide even more reason to believe that Ray Buchanan said what Chris Landry said he said about Vick and dog fighting. The lesson here is that current and former NFL players look out for each other, no matter how ridiculous they look or sound when doing so.

Need more evidence that Portis should be ignored on this point? He refers to Vick as a "positive role model." We need to know whether Clinton gave Mike this label for giving the middle finger to the home fans (including kids) or giving the STD to the ex-girlfriend. Or maybe he's referring to the water bottle thing. There are just so many positive things from which to choose.

Umm yeah let me bench my superstar running back because he condones dog fighting.

Yeah right, people.

Personally, I do think dog fighting is wrong. But to let that have any say on who starts on your fantasy or real football team, give me a break.

I like how you criticize Portis because G/d forbid he is okay with dogs getting scratched up a bit, but then you are perfectly okay with wishing a torn ACL upon another human being.

Classy.

Getting scratched up a bit? Have you ever seen two random dogs get in it. Then you add the people factor to it. Do you know what ends a dog fight? Its more than getting scratched up a bit.

I never wished he would die like the dogs he says its okay to watch fight, and if you have ever seen this sort of stuff on tv undercover video, many dogs do die it is brutal....

Just a career threatening injury for that POS is good enough for me

Someone should explain to Clinton, that dogs are living creatures that feel pain just like a human person does, and inflicting pain on a living creature for the purpose of sport is morally wrong.

I wouldn't wish a torn ACL on Portis but you're really understating it to say dogs get "scratched up a bit" from dogfighting. Usually they're malnourished, fed things like tobasco or beaten to make them mean, and the dogs typically end up maimed or killed. It is sick and cruel to take two animals that don't know what they're doing and force them to kill each other.

I'm not really sure what Portis was thinking when he made these comments. Makes you wonder...

Is anyone surprised by this? Newsflash: Portis is not smart

If Portis hadn't been blessed athletically, he'd be working at a carwash... the guy's just not all there. His "characters" display the creativity, wit & intelligence of a fourth grade child.

Laws against dog fighting are stupid. It's because you people have emotional ties to your dogs. Some people don't. You kill animals every day for your enjoyment when you order that steak or hamburger. You could easily eat soy and oat and be healthier. Why do you order beef? Because you enjoy it. They enjoy watching them fight. What's the difference?

There isn't, an animal dies and a person gets something they enjoy.

It's hypocracy. I agree 100% with Mr. Portis. America is a free country and you should be free to do what you wish as long as no person is hurt by it. Which in this case, obviously, no person is.

I would never dream of hurting an animal in this way, and I wouldn't enjoy watching dog's fight. But that's my choice, and everyone should be allowed to make their own choices.

I disagree completely. Apples and oranges. Eating animals vs. making them fight for our enjoyment is not a good comparison at all.

"eat soy and oat"......please.

You are forcing your morals on someone else, when their actions have no impact on you. It isn't right.

I didn't force morals on anyone. I just think your comparisons are ridiculous.

Why? Because you dont have to see the cow get a pointed hammer to the head to get your steak?

Meat from animals is a source of food and life for people across the world, dogfighting is entertainment only. Again, your comparison is ridiculous.

Like i said, you could get nutrition from soy and wheat. You eat meat because you enjoy it. If you weren't a complete hypocrit, you would value a cow's life as much as fido's and not want it dying for your enjoyment either.

You're arguing just to argue. Meat is a source of life around the world....not because people enjoy it so much.....but because it's readily available.

At no point in my past posts have I said I'm a major meat eater and against soy and wheat. And at no point have I ever stated I was against using animals for entertainment either.

You're looking for something that's not there. I'm just stating the facts and I'll stand by it. Your attempted comparisons fail.

I'm done with this now. Call me whatever you want. Have a great day.

Before it dies a cow is well fed, well taken care of and so on. They are not beaten, malnourished, fed a bunch of crap...and so on.

As others have said, your comparison is a bit off base.
