Mr. Dynasty 0 Posted June 15, 2007 Lyndon Johnson, he had JFK killed. Any president who whacks another is top notch to me. Lyndon Baines Johnson, 1963-1969 LBJ is remembered for his Great Society initiative which included comprising liberal legislation: civil rights laws, Medicare (health care for the elderly), Medicaid (health care for the poor), aid to education, and a major "War on Poverty". It was also Johnson who began America's direct involvement in the ground war in Vietnam. By 1968 there were 550,000 American soldiers inside Vietnam; in 1967 and 1968 they were being killed at the rate of over 1000 a month. Today, Social Security and National HealthCare (Medicare, Medicaid) are two of the biggest concerns (disasters?) for the American people. Immigration too is a top concern for voters who can look back on LBJ and "thank" him for the "Immigration and Nationality Services Act of 1965" along with the "Bilingual Education Act". Not only did LBJ open the doors for more immigrants, he made it so they didn't have to learn English once they arrived here. And perhaps the only thing more important than healthcare and immigration to Americans today is WAR. Again, we can thank LBJ for much of this for with the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, LBJ not only broke ground by allowing a President to go to war without the Senate's approval, he also started the disturbing War-losing streak the the USA now seems to be experiencing. LBJ was certainly a President who got things done and the Utopian version of his Great Society probably was a good idea. But we're paying for it today. phillybear 366 Posted June 15, 2007 If we're talking popularity contests... well then sure. Exactly. Politics are never about issues. It's all about popularity and public speaking. Reagan had "IT". Clinton sporadically had "IT". Carter, Bush, Bush, Nixon, Ford....none of them had "IT". Fred Dalton Thompson will be the next president. He spent about a decade as a main character on one of the longest running dramas in TV history. Are you kidding me? That's almost a completely unfair advantage. flap 1 Posted June 15, 2007 The answer is Reagan. Nobody else is even close. I'll grant you that Raygun was a great speaker. Beyond that, two thumbs way down. His administration is directly responsible for the savings and loan scandal that cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. No matter how you spin it, it was theft on a massive scale. Voltaire 5,538 Posted June 15, 2007 I'll go with Clinton, but what made Clinton so good was Newt Gingrich running the House. It kept both their worst instincts in check. The first two years before the GOP took the house were scary. I liked Reagan too, but those massive budget deficits... Nixon's ideas, priorities and the direction he wanted to take the country were great, but his personal failings were inexcusable. Daddy Bush had the best foreign policy. Carter and Ford were good people but inflation was out of control. LBJ, W heck no flaming disaster both. At least LBJ had the Civil Rights legislation and you could say his heart was in the right place but his Great Society was an expensive failure. Bush Junior is nothing but a pile of sh*t. IGotWorms 4,063 Posted June 15, 2007 Its a sad list, really: LBJ - Might have been a contender if it weren't for Vietnam. Nixon - Might have been a contender if he hadn't been batsh*t insane. Gerald Ford - 'Nuf said. Carter - I like the guy, but he was a piss poor president. Raygun - Had no idea what was going on in his own administration, which isn't surprising given the Alzheimer's. H.W. Bush - Underwhelming. Clinton - Winner by default. He had some screw-ups and personal weaknesses, but he showed us the post-Cold War path to peace and prosperity. W - Too bad W didn't follow that path.

MicktheGreat 1 Posted June 16, 2007 I'll go with Clinton, but what made Clinton so good was Newt Gingrich running the House. It kept both their worst instincts in check. The first two years before the GOP took the house were scary. LBJ = great with Civil Rights, awful with conflict (i.e. VERY stubborn) Nixon = very smart/savvy president but very shady (had potential to be very good president if not for Watergate and other integrity issues) Carter = bad president, good post-presidency (i.e. Habitat for Humanity and whatnot) Ford = bad president, nice guy Reagan = strong visible-leader type, good Cold War president, not-so-great with other stuff (IMO) Daddy Bush = average president but nothing special, some post-presidency charitable activity Clinton = probably best all-around president lately -- had Reagan-like charisma & Nixon-like political savvy -- but certainly benefitted from being checked by GOP Congress. Pretty solid post-presidency, due to charitable activities (Katrina, tsunami, etc.) W Bush = bad president Just my $.
