Who was your 1st ever pick in fantasy football?

Recommended Posts

I bring out this thread once in awhile because I always find it comical to see who we were taking back in the day. This is my 15th year of fantasy football and my original league started 2 QBs and gave a pt per yard on TDs and doubled it if it was over 50 yards. We'd have scores in the 400-600 range routinely   I know...I know....we've come a long way since then. It was the initial system suggested to me and we went with it. Anyways, my first two picks in 1993 were:

:drumroll:

1. Warren Moon

2. Mark Rypien

Moon was always a pretty good fantasy choice but I got caught up in the "Troy Aikman super bowl hero but horrible fantasy player" syndrome with Rypien. The skins won the big game the year before if I recall.

It was in 2001, and the first year of my league now in its 7th year. I had #2 overall, I believe, and I took Peyton Manning.

I remember Edgerrin James went #1, and Marshall Faulk went right after me. I ended up regretting that one, but did make it to the Super Bowl. Got beat by Aaron Brooks and his 4 garbage Touchdowns that week. I remember it vividly. I was at Arrowhead watching the Chiefs/Chargers, and kept seeing the Saints score going from 35-7, to 35-14, to 35-21. It sucked.

Good thread.

1991 - Jerry Rice

I was the ONLY guy with fantasy mag (FFIndex) and all the other guys were like, "What's that?"

I destroyed the 10-team league with this squad:

QB - Mark Rypien

QB - Chris Miller

QB - Steve Young

RB - Emmitt Smith

RB - Rodney Hampton

RB - Brad Baxter

RB - Brad Muster

WR - Jerry Rice

WR - Rob Moore

WR - Brian Blades

WR - Wendall Davis

TE - Mike Tice

TE - Awalt (had to I.R. Eric Green)

K - Jeff Jaeger

K - Scott Norwood

D - Atlanta

D - TB

Ahhhh....the memories!!

Fred Taylor 2001. I think he broke his back or knee or vagina or something in game 3. I haven't drafted that walking ambulance since. :music_guitarred:

Never did I think I would see a mention of Rob Awalt when I opened this thread. Thanks NextGen, for posting that full team. Those names brought me back. Good stuff.

Great list right there. Chris Miller was a doozy. He was so hyped because of the run n shoot with Andre Rison and Terrance Mathis and Co. Hampton was a stud as well. Everyone was always afraid of his injury problems but he'd put up the numbers. That's hilarious that you had Jaeger because he was the reason I thought about this thread today. Someone mentioned Jagermeister. :music_guitarred:

It was about 6-7 years ago or so. Of course, I'd never played FF before and hadn't read or even thought about anything FF-related before the draft.

I had the #3 overall pick and went with....

TE Tony Gonzalez

My logic (at the time) was that there were no other good TEs in the league; so if I didn't get him there, then I was rooned at TE.

Actually...as unlikely as it sounds, I ended up winning the whole league (completely by luck) by drafting Curtis Martin, David Boston, Troy Brown, Donovan McNabb, and Rich Gannon when they had HUGE years -- and I picked up Priest Holmes off the waiver-wire (as a BYE week filler, literally the week that he exploded and became a legit FF stud). It was crazy...

1996 and I drew the first pick in the draft:

1.1 Emmit Smith

2.12 Scott Mitchell :pointstosky:

3.1 Terrell Davis (a second year back coming off a modestly successful rookie campaign).

My WRs were the suck and I fianished under .500 I believe.

1985 -- we drafted by categories that year -- QBs first then RBs, etc. I think I took Tommy Kramer at QB. Curt Warner at RB. I can't remember the rest.

1995, I picked Drew Bledsoe. He failed to throw a TD pass for the first 7 or 8 weeks! I got my clock cleaned in Fantasy Football but I learned my lesson! I never drafted Beldsoe again...

I think it was Sterling Sharpe back in 1993 at 1.09 in a 12-team league. I took Thurman Thomas, I believe, in the second round. If memory serves me, and it doesn't always, I took Pete Stoyanovich in Round 5 that year (because Fantasy Football Index recommended him). :overhead:

Fortunately, I've learned a lot since then...

I picked 8th in an 8 team league in 1995 and took Bret Favre. I knew nothing about fantasy football until a friend asked me to join. Went to Walden's and bought some big ol book they had in the sports section to learn.

This thread brings me back. My first pick was Steve Young.

Question for those who have played 10+ yers or so. Do you think FF is easier now then it was then? Now any joe Schmoe can log into a website and get advice and cheatsheets back in the day you did it on your own. Also, do you find it more fun now then in years back.

Barry Sanders here too.

For a couple years after he retired I kept drafting him in the last round JUST IN CASE!

haha i think that was the saem year as me. I know for sure he was my first pick, not sure what year. #4 in an inaugral dynasty draft. God, that team was sick. Picked up Holt, Henry (he was good on Buff for a couple of seasons) S Alex in like the 7th round (This was R Watters last season). My QB was Elvis Grbac, that sucked. Also had some other good WRs cant think of right now.

1994 - Jerry Rice #4 or #5 Overall?? I remember walking into that draft with just a Pro Football Weekly that I bought on the way to the draft. As I arrived, eveyone had their own personal war rooms with Highlighters, cheatsheets, etc. I ended up getting lucky and winning the league that year because I ended up with Favre, Natrone Means, Barry Foster, Rice, Terrence Mathis, and Irving Fryar. Those were the good 'ole days before the internet when you could really get some steals in the draft!! Now, anyone can go print out an "Average Draft" or "Consensous" rankings 5 minutes before the draft and still do pretty well. Leagues are now won with the late round draft picks and mid season pick ups and a lot of LUCK in my opinion....

It was more fun when you had to research and find nuggets of info. back in then day. Now, someone doesn't even have to know what a running back does and could win a league. The internet levels the playing field, but it's still a blast!
