Sho Nuff 720 Posted September 18, 2007 Heading up to Philly for a few days at the beginning of October. The wife's group at work is getting some award. Anyway, just wanting some recommendations for food while we are there. We are staying on Chestnut St. right across from "the Shops at Liberty Place"...just a few blocks from City Hall. Whatcha got? Wife is not into seafood, always likes a good steak...just something I cannot get in Tennessee I guess. And I think a cheese steak is a must for me at some point. wiffleball 4,799 Posted September 18, 2007 There's this one place in Philly - forget their name, but it's a big deal to Philly folks: What they do see, is they take some greasy gristly beef, slice it thin, then fry it, then cover it with about a pint of cheese whiz. If you're into the healthy stuff, you can get it smothered with half a pound each of fried onions and peppers. I forget what place did that in Philly, but talk to any Philthadelphian and you'd swear inventoring this sammich is somewhere about 10 notches above curing polio. pingpong 0 Posted September 18, 2007 A good cheesesteak option for you would be to head to South Street. Jims Steaks is at 4th and South. In addition to a good steak, in a place that sells beer, you and wifey could take in the whole South Street atmosphere. If you want an area with a ton of good eateries, as well as good nightlife, try the 2nd Street and Market Street area. Cuba Libre, Plough and Stars (upscale Irish pub), Amada, Budokan, Continental Alma de Cuba is a good place to eat at 16th and Walnut, not far from your hotel. http://www.almadecubarestaurant.com/ Brasserie Perrier is also at 16th and Walnut. Good Belgian food and beer http://www.brasserieperrier.com/. My buddy Pat Delaney (brother of Kim Delaney) is the stud bartender at the place. Rittenhouse Square is a good place to wander around and bar hop. The Irish Pub is obviously good Pub food http://www.irishpubphilly.com/, as is the Tir Na Nog at 16th and Arch http://www.tirnanogphilly.com/homepage.php Lots of good options. Seriously, if you want to impress the woman, consider Roys.
Sho Nuff 720 Posted September 18, 2007 Lots of good options. Seriously, if you want to impress the woman, consider Roys. Probably where we will go. As much as I like a good pub...the wifey being preggo kind of puts a damper on her willingness to bar hop. That and 2 other women that she works with that we will probably eat with are preggo as well.

Sho Nuff 720 Posted September 18, 2007 They are called designated drivers, you dummy I know that. Though, we are cabbing it anyway. But the enjoyment Id have from a few brews is not worth the whining and complaining Id here the entire flight back to TN.

pingpong 0 Posted September 19, 2007 What about Tony Luke's, I prefer them over Pats or Genos. Considering that they are staying by Market East, the closest big name steak shop that they can get to is Jims. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a joint in Reading Terminal, but I haven't been there in years.
Sho Nuff 720 Posted September 19, 2007 Well...not sure about Roys. Unless there are things on the menu in the place that differ from what they show on the web. Wife is not much for seafood as it is...and while preggo its even worse. On the net it did not appear like that had much of a selection of non-seafood items. Looked very good to me...and interesting to her to say the least...we may go just for dessert because that Melting Hot Chocolate Souffle looked pretty tasty. We had some type of fish, and some no-fish entree, but I do remember it haveing a lot of seafood options. If you are looking for an expense account type of dinner where money is not really an issue, you can't go wrong at one of the Stephen Starr joints http://www.barclayprime.com/ is a steak joint near your hotel http://www.smithandwollensky.com/philadelphia.htm Smith and Wollensky is a great steak house on Rittenhouse Square http://www.thecapitalgrille.com/Locations/...on=Philadelphia The Capital Grille, another good steak joint near City Hall http://www.zanzibarblue.com/menu.htm - is a Jazz bar with good food near City Hall. Well...it will not be expensed...but money is not much of an issue as we are going to celebrate the wife getting a nice promotion (and we rarely get to eat out someplace nice with a 3 year old and no family around...and with another on the way it will be even fewer chances for us to go out). May check one of those out. Been to a Smith and Wollensky in Vegas. Very tasty.
pingpong 0 Posted September 19, 2007 For a nice celebration, I generally like to stay away from places I have been before, or places that are national chains. We just went to Amada for my wife's 40th. Very pricey, especially if you drink. However, I think they have a tapas sampler menu item where they just keep bringing you more and more food. If you have never had tapas, it is basically appetizer size plates of very good food. Amada is more of a dining experience than a stuff your belly type place. You could end up being there for a few hours, and not leave feeling all bloated. We arrived around 6pm with a reservation, and had no trouble getting a seat. By 7pm. there was a huge line. I do remember seeing that there are plenty of non-fish options on the menu, and the waiters are very helpful.

Sho Nuff 720 Posted October 3, 2007 Well...had a good trip to Philly. We had reservations at Barclay Prime...ended up canceling them as the wife saw an ad for Fogo de Chao on the airplane and she loves the brazilian joints... Pretty damn tasty. Enjoyed walking around...seeing a few things...but damn, that is one dirty city. And its no wonder...I cannot walk 20 feet in downtown Nashville without seeing a trash can...I saw about 6 of them in downtown Philly. And driving by would I would only describe as the ghetto...I noticed just about all of the ghetto-ites had Satellite TV in the "yard".
