Ever not been able to quit a job?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to put in my notice today, and not one manager will take my call! Can I quit a job through e-mail? What is the procedure for this type of thing? Is there a fair amount of time that I should give for a return phone call?

You should give 2 weeks notice. Quitting will come back and haunt you. And believe me, there are only so many ghosts you want following you around. Although most of them look like the hookers that I've slaughtered over the years. But it begins to feel like a Verizon network commercial with a bunch of people/spirits all around you. It's a bit creepy. Anyway, where was I? Oh, yeah. Make sure you secure a very good alibi before you kill her.

Stop showing up and see how long they pay you.

Don't burn bridges. Go into your manager's office and tell him face to face if possible, and give two weeks. I did so when I quit my last job, and when I was up for a better position with my new company...they called him and he gave an excellent reccomendation for me.

I finally got a call back from the HR department. They are located in California, I'm in Seattle. I told him that I was giving notice and would stay through the end of the 12th of October (two weeks). He asked if I could tell him why I was leaving and I just let him know that 'it wasn't the right fit for me' and left it at that. I'd called with a couple of concerns over the 2 months I've been here and was completely blown off by management, so my theory is, if they weren't listening then, why should I think that they will listen to me now?

i've never known anyone who gave notice of resignation over the phone.

it's done with a letter and in person.

unless you're quitting on bad terms.

God, I really should have spelled the whole thing out from the start. Sorry.

So this company is headquartered in the Bay area. I work at a satellite office in Seattle. The entire interview process was done over the phone with exception of two meetings I had in Seattle with the "NW Regional Sales Manager" (who's only a manager in title. He knows little to nothing about our products, policies, etc.) who just wanted to make sure that I wasn't on bad terms with anybody in our industry. I also met with my the office manager to make sure that we'd be able to work out of the same office without killing each other. In both of the face to face meetings, my resume, cover letter and reference sheets were never even looked at, and in one...I was asked to hold while the person I was meeting with took a phone call. A personal phone call!

Since I've been working here, I've only seen the "regional sales manager" a half dozen times, and my office mate has decided to stay home almost 20 days! I started July 23rd!

To resign in person would have either A) required me to fly to Oakland and speak with HR or B) wait until the regional sales manager decided to show up and give him my resignation. Over the phone was the only way to start this process.

If you are trying to get a feel for this place, think no further than, "The Office" (BBC Version) or "Office Space" only scale it down to 3 employees here, probably less than 30 company wide. Oh, and in those shows, they have CPU's that they use to take orders, file customers, do their accounting, and correspond with clients. I'm actually sending this using my personal laptop and a pirated wi-fi connection from the company next door!

And I've made sure to not point out any of the "things that are wrong with this company". You never know who you'll run into on the road to employment.

A couple of months ago a kid at my work left a handwritten note on his manager's desk when he was out at lunch. 2 minute notice. :pointstosky:

I once quit a job and gave the 2 weeks notice in writing, interview, the works. My last day 1/2 hour before I was leaving my boss came in with a project for me. My desk was all cleaned and I was just sitting there, waiting for him to come in, shake hands and say "goodbye and good luck." I had to remind him that in 30 minutes he would likely never see me again. Immediately got up and left. Laughed all the way to the car. Dude was that incompetent.

I've got 8 more working days left before my last day on October 12th (I've got this Friday off) and I've set myself a personal goal to achieve before I leave this company...

I'm going to try to get my 1000th FFToday post before I leave work on the 12th at 5:00PM (or 4:00PM if I don't take a lunch) (PST).

Expect to see me around here quite a bit over the next few days! Ciao!

For you mathematically challenged, that's 15+ per day if I only posted on work days, but since I'll be posting this weekend too, it'll actually be closer to 12 per day.

Good night!

Sh*t, I was in the Army. They won't let you quit. Once you're in you're stuck. It's worse in a war time, they won't even let you out when your commitment ends, they'll keep you in against your will as long as they want for up to eight years.

Wow, 2 whole months...way to put the time in.

If I were you, I would just stop showing up, I guarantee you won't be missed. Hell, they won't take your calls because they don't know who the hell you are.

HTH.

also, get your sh1t together and stay at a job longer next time.

Are you serious?! Two months is plenty of time to evaluate a company and determine whether or not it's worth staying with. It's because my sh*t IS together that I'm able to realize this and move on with-out wasting any more of their or my time. I guess for some (maybe you?) it's difficult to understand why a person would walk away from a good salary, benefits, a lack of oversight (allowing one to get away with just about murder at work with no punishment), reasonable schedule, etc. For me, it's about more than that. If I'm to be expected to "develop and maintain a new sales territory" (as the put in my offer letter) for this company, then I need them to support me in doing so. As soon as it was realized that they weren't going to assist in MY development or stand behind me as their employee (ie: listening to reasonable concerns (sales strategies, pricing, programs and inventory levels), allow me to set up P/K meetings with my clients, leave this desk to make a sales call, etc.), leaving and trying again with another company was the only responsible and rational decision.

And I'm young, have no family to support, no mortgage, no rent (I've got a second job that pays my rent, utilities, internet and phone as my compensation)...have my bills in check, and a good head on my shoulders (ie: my sh*t together) so why not leave a place that's creating disharmony in other areas of my life? I'd understand it if you were financially forced to stay in a job that you hate, with people you can't stand and didn't have an opportunity to either move up in the company that you're with if you were responsible to a wife and kids (in fact, I'd commend your commitment to your family and responsibilities), but don't assume that because thats not the case for me, I don't have my ducks in a row.

1) It really didn't take that much time...

2) I told y'all a couple of posts ago that I've set a goal for myself to attain before I leave here on the 12th. To write my 1000th post.

3) I had to "defend" myself from some of you old farts (At least judging by your lost comment, I was assuming you're old...uh. I meant older...doh...older than me.) :ninja:

I keep forgetting to ask...

Can I go back on the "two week" part of my notice and just make this Friday (which I've got off) my last day and save myself the agony of having to come back for next week? What's the protocol for this?

Googled some quitting etiquette and evidently you should stick to whatever you expressed. Often people will give notice ahead of time and choose a date that works for them but may not be two weeks, but the consensus was if you said it, stick with it.

Have no experience with this though <_<

W/out getting into details about what I do/did, they have to fire me. I caught wind of it and resigned Monday. They said they'd hire me back in a heart beat.

So this will be most likely my last post on this....

Yesterday, upon returning from my lunch break I noticed an unfamiliar man sitting at my desk, IN my chair. As I walked through the door, he stood up and said, "Hi Nick". If it wasn't weird enough that this stranger was sitting at my desk, behind my computer, in my chair...he also knew MY name! I had heard the voice before and recalled it to be that of the man who hired me. He was in town to sign a lease on a new warehouse, introduce the new Seattle GM and see if together, the new GM and him could get me to stay.

To make a long story short, I sat and listened to them pitch then new sales strategy (which sounded JUST LIKE the OLD strategy) before standing up, shaking both of their hands and telling them that I'd have to think about it before I could make any commitments and that I had work to finish up. I then returned to my desk and proceeded to finish up my last pending project. Before they left, they stopped by my desk and asked if I'd had time to reconsider my resignation. It'd been all of an hour! Their lack of consideration and desperation cleared up any doubts that I may have been having and so I replied, "You know, with 3 sales people in Seattle, and only 3 desks in the office, I was wondering if you'd really need me to finish out the week? I told you that I would stay until Friday, but that was before you hired a new GM and since I'm not taking on anything new this week, I figured that it might be best if I just left."

They appeared puzzled as to how I could turn down the opportunity to work for their company that was going to start doing things the new way which was exactly like the old way and a major reason that I was leaving in the first place. The HR guy shrugged his shoulders and said, "I've got a plane to catch, it's been great working with you." (This was the first time that we'd met face-to-face and only the 5th or 6th time we'd even spoken. Yeah, it'd been great!) The new GM said, "Well, uh...um. HUH? Yeah, what do we normally do about this? Lemme call the owner and see what he thinks." I could only think, "Way to go guys. Great management material. Decision making at it's finest!" They left with out giving me a straight forward answer. I assumed that I was destined to work in this environment another 3 days. The thought of it was unbearable! Just as I was had finished typing a text message to my Dad (who works in the same industry as me, and knows just about everybody) asking if he'd ever heard of this new GM (which he hadn't), they called back from the road and told me that I could lock up tonight and bring in the keys in the morning. I figured out a way to lock everything up, get my car out of the garage and leave the keys and garage door opener on the desk for them to distribute this morning.

So I write this to you from home, sitting in my little home-office while wearing my boxers, eating a bowl of cereal and contemplating which of the two movies I rented (Farce of the Penguins or 23, Kate and Leopold was checked out) that I'll watch first. I didn't quite make it to 1000 posts before my last day (which was supposed to be Friday) but I'm still going to give it a shot.
