peenie reviews: american gangster

Recommended Posts

i give it 2.5 peenie stars out of 5:

this unique story was unfortunately filmed to tell the same tired drug story. besides the film being overrun with rappers and miscast characters, someone did not research the film enough to even make the picture visually entertaining.

it wasn't a good gangster movie or serpico type film.

perhaps the novice will like it?

imo, this could've been a good film, sadly it wasn't.

It looked good when I saw the previews, but I read some bad reviews afterwards.

you think to yourself, "how could it possibly be bad?"

i felt there was no depth to any of the characters, there was no care in making this film accurate to the time.

Serpico was awful. One of the few Pacino movies that I did not like.

I'm smart and have taste, so I intuitively knew this movie would not be worth seeing. Through this method, I've saved time and money. Contact me for more helpful suggestions.

i don't really remember the movie much, but i remember the story which is more important. (note the usage of the word "type")

it wasn't a good movie about a drug lord and it wasn't a good movie about bad cops.

the critics gave this movie an A.

some people that have seen it loved it and thought it was their all time favorite gangster film.

i just didn't think it was all that.

The cop that Crowe plays said it was very accurate(except for what how Crowe dressed)

Washington and Crowe are two GREAT actors, I will see this just for them. And the premise sounds good.

Acreed.

In a related note, I was watching a documentary on 2 of the Harlem drug lords of the early 70's last night..

Forgive My ignorance, but is that what the premise of American Gangster about?

I can't remember the names of the 2 that I am thinking about, and am too lazy to look it up.

lemme guess, you hate it because it stars a black man? shame on you, peenie.

Denzel isn't really black. He's sort of neutral :overhead:

It's getting bad reviews too. That sux. I really thought that was going to be a good movie. Russell Crowe and Denzel with a good director. No way I thought that could miss.

Honestly, who cares what the stoopid reviewers say? Fock them

I'd be willing to bet that if every one of you losers here saw the movie, there would be a 90% thumbs up rating.

These "reviewers" are the same slapnuts that told us to go see Brokeback Mountain, Chocolat, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Ghost, Thelma & Louise, Apollo 13, The English Patient, Elizabeth, Victor/Victoria, Hannah and Her Sisters...etc..etc..

All of these were nominated for Oscars in some form or another

Actually i found a few reviews that were pretty good too. 4 stars from Ebert. I will see this movie anyways. i just hope its good. My first reaction on seeing the trailors was that this looked like a great movie.

I saw the same documentary. History channel? From what I've read this focuses on one of those drug lords. Don't know if the other is mentioned in the movie or not but I don't think he's a big

part of the plot.

If that is the case, then I'm going to love this one.

I'm sure that i'm in the minority here, but I actually like New Jack City better then Scarface.

Am I my brothers keeper?

i just finished watching american gangster on BET and it covered the life of frank lucas, the man played by denzel washington.

the BET documentary was very good and better than the movie, imo.

they mentioned my step-father during that documentary, claude brown, who wrote a book about growing up in heroin infested harlem.

i personally am sick of the glorification of drug lords and gangsters.

Yep me too. cept for the scene when Pacino is barricaded and utters his famous line, Scarface is a crappy movie.

New Jack City is WAY better..

my daughter saw it with her friend misha (remember him?) and she gave it 4 stars.

she thinks i'm crazy and asked me to explain exactly why i didn't like it.

her father saw it and he gave it 1 star.

i think her father and i are more familiar with the truth of matters and saw many flaws where just the regular movie goer loves it.

so, seeing that kilroy hated 30 days of night and i enjoyed it, you have to take my movie reviews with a grain of salt.

i don't expect a movie about vampires to be anything but bloody, but i expect my gangster films to have some depth.

did anyone see american gangster this weekend?

I saw it with my wife on Saturday night. I left feeling as though I'd watch a black rendition of Goodfellas. Ghettofellas, if you will.

Has anyone heard the album? I can't stop listening to a few songs. When souljah boy demoralized my hip hop love i thought it was the end. Jay-Z brought me right back in. Not sure who's into hip hop or not but songs you have to download are

Pray

No Hook

Fallin

Just a notch below those songs are ignorant sh1t and blue magic. The whole CD is great though. Its gonna be the first album i buy since The black album.

Those 3 songs, along with Keak Da Sneaks new song are the best songs of the year.
