wiffleball 4,797 Posted November 9, 2007 I never really understood tides. I mean, I hear that somehow the moon has an impact on the tides, but I don't much understand it. I don't really get that whole low tide / high tide thing. In fact, i just don't understand what causes waves to just up and form in the first place. I mean, why wouldn't sand follow the same kind of patterns if its was about the moon's gravity or whatever? And why does water in the oceans get pulled around, but water in say, the Great Lakes not get pulled around. (or do they have lo tide and hi tide too?) Someone please splain this to me like I'm a 4 year-old. Always freaked me out.

shake_a_leg 0 Posted November 9, 2007 Someone please splain this to me like I'm a 4 year-old. Always freaked me out. The fish are just taking a bath and splashing around. That's why there's waves. You have to take your bath before you go to bed just like the fishies....that's why the water goes up at night. Now take your goddamm bath and go to bed you little bastard. kutulu 1,720 Posted November 9, 2007 The changing tide produced at a given location is the result of the changing positions of the Moon and Sun relative to the Earth coupled with the effects of Earth rotation and the local shape of the sea floor. Ban Sux. Sea level measured by coastal tide gauges may also be strongly affected by wind.

Rusty Syringes 479 Posted November 9, 2007 When TheNewGirl waddles around, it creates a wobble in the Earth's spin, thereby sloshing water around.

GettnHuge 2 Posted November 9, 2007 On the southwest portion of lake erie, when you have a strong wind heading northeast, the water level will drop quite a bit. How can you tell, you ask? Go fishing saturday and the boat is even with the dock. Have a good stiff wind start blowing, come back sunday and boat is a foot below the dock. hell, what am I saying...it's GLOBAL WARMING! :overhead:

Someone please splain this to me like I'm a 4 year-old. Always freaked me out. A couple years ago in a junior college (basics of) physics class, the prof. mentioned this in passing, and I remember thinking ...really? Never learned that somehow, and it was cool in a way. Made me wonder if there was anything else people consider so basic that I'm missing and would get to experience a revelation on. As long as it's not like a three year old knows it kind of basic..
