FeelingMN 273 Posted September 8, 2009 So today, I want to ask you, what’s your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve? What discoveries will you make? What will a president who comes here in twenty or fifty or one hundred years say about what all of you did for this country? To be fair, they did re-word part of the original speech. Before there was a question directed at students about How they would help the President? Or something to that effect. In which case, it was a poor choice of wording. Just gives a bad impression to the millions swayed by fear mongering. Obviously there's nothing socialistic about the address, but listen closely to people's response as to why they don't want kids hearing the speech and you'll hear socialism, socialism, socialism, propaganda, socialism........... GettnHuge 1 Posted September 8, 2009 The speech never bothered me. I think it's a fine idea for any president to do this. It's the lesson plan that rubs me the wrong way. I can't believe the length, though. After a harf hour of this I predict more violence in schools.
NorthernVike 2,080 Posted September 8, 2009 This is a terrible idea. What kind of message is Obama going to send to our children when they realize that he cannot even memorize a simple speech and has to read it from a teleprompter in front of millions of young minds

FlaHawker 24 Posted September 8, 2009 Swampy has a short memory: House Democrats criticized President Bush yesterday for using Education Department funds to produce and broadcast a speech that he made Tuesday at a Northwest Washington junior high school. The Democratic critics accused Bush of turning government money for education to his own political use, namely, an ongoing effort to inoculate himself against their charges of inattention to domestic issues. The speech at Alice Deal Junior High School, broadcast live on radio and television, urged students to study hard, avoid drugs and turn in troublemakers. “The Department of Education should not be producing paid political advertising for the president, it should be helping us to produce smarter students,” House Majority Leader Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.) said. “And the president should be doing more about education than saying, ‘Lights, camera, action.’ ” Two House committees demanded that the department explain the use of its funds for the speech, an explanation that Deputy Secretary David T. Kearns provided late in the day in a letter to Rep. William D. Ford (D-Mich.), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee. Education Secretary Lamar Alexander was out of town. [...]Rep. Patricia Schroeder (D-Colo.), chairwoman of the Select Committee on Children, Youth and Families, said it was outrageous for the White House to “start using precious dollars for campaigns” when “we are struggling for every silly dime we can get” for education programs. Rep. Martin Frost (D-Tex.) said that if Bush feels obliged to use government funds to hire outside consultants “to make him look good,” then he should fire some of the public relations experts on the White House payroll. “Then the president might be more sympathetic to unemployment benefits,” Frost said, referring to Bush’s threat to veto legislation to extend benefits. http://www.brokencountry.com/index.php/200...al-advertising/ Swampy is about to get run out of another thread he started. jerryskids 5,247 Posted September 8, 2009 I thought it was a very good speech. Then again, I've always agreed with him on his general positions on education (other than lack of support for vouchers). He is for charter schools and merit-based pay, which is... quite un-socialist of him. :haidscratch: I wonder why he doesn't apply that same thinking to other things. My favorite part was when he referenced the kid in Cali with brain cancer who is going to college this year. He basically said "dood had half his brain removed and is still going to college, wtf is your problem?!"

Yeah, it reminds me of 1991 with GHWB made his "Don't do drugs" speech to school kids and the Dem leadership called for Congressional hearings and demanded Bush pay back the $21 grand it cost to produce the speech. Like the Lions, this guy just can't win. What is the point of the article? That partisan politics always existed? That one party will always second-guess the other party? Can we get another editorial on water has most always been wet? Everything here is post-speech, which is normal in partisan politics..... the big difference with the situation today is the mass hysteria, fearmongering, disinformation, and people actually trying to censor the President of the United States talking to children -- which Reagan and Bush both did with no massive protests from GOP -- talking about "working hard and doing well in school" .... Censoring him because they are small-minded enough to think that he is going to make all of their kids commie, lib, hom0s with this short address. Did the Dems have a huge, and well-orchestrated nationwide scare campaign in 1991? Were Dems keeping their children out of school so they wouldn't hear Herbert Walker's speech? Were they bringing massive pressure on the schools not to show it? Were the disrespecting the president in a way that under the Republican mentality (you're either with us or against us) would be extremely unpatriotic? None of this happened. Is it crazy to ask -- after the fact -- what a president who has gutted education is doing spending $27,000 on a lame as "skool is kool" speech? Is it crazy to ask about the timing about a president who completely ignored domestic affairs (and later lost an election because of it) is using this as an attempt to pretend like he cares about domestic affairs during a heated presidential election campaign? That's for you decide. But it's not anything like this massive fearmongering campaign by the GOP well BEFORE the Obama speech was even delivered. Apples and oranges

Before making grandiose statements concerning fear mongering, maybe you should watch the speech that Obama vomits on TV tonight and see if his fear mongering is greater than what you described. People don't like the government. People don't trust the government. Rather than working on changing the problem, we are blaming the messengers and telling them to shut up and take it up the ass. It's baffling.

I think most of the uproar was over the corriculum the Obama admin was gonna send to the schools. I saw somewhere yesterday that this is in violation of federal laws prohibiting the Feds from being involved on that level. I have not looked it up, so I'm not sure. However, the fact the Admin changed the coriculum tells me they knew they were wrong on some points there. Other than that, I have no problem with any POTUS addressing school kids on generic "stay in school" stuff. The Dems launched and investigation into GHWB for his speech, and demanded he pay the $21k out of his pocket for the cost of the speech, so you should get your facts right before making claims such as this.
