Me_2006 14 Posted March 11, 2010 The chick didn't do herself any favors. Why not just wear a dress and walk in with someone else. That's all "date" means to the administration. They can't control who you take pictures with and go to some fancy dinner place before or who you dance with while you're there. In fact, most girls do dance together at prom more than they dance with the guys they're with. We just watch. They wouldn't let a kid wear jeans or some other form of inappropriate attire, and I guarantee you a guy in a dress wouldnt be allowed in either. She should have just worn a damn dress, walked in with a guy friend, and not focked it up for everyone else.

Also, she had no clue they'd cancel prom. The school board cancelled prom as a retaliation. They know the student body will blame the girl. Basically, you're saying it's OK to discriminate against gays and they should have to follow whatever anti-gay policy is set.

Chronic Husker 86 Posted March 11, 2010 bullsh*t. She made it a point by bringing in the ACLU. She doesn't care if it gets cancelled. She just wanted to make a show of it, get her 15 minutes of fame and ram her point down everyone elses throat. She brought in the ACLU because she was being discriminated against. The school is only cancelling it because they won't condone giving the girl her rights as a lesbian. All the school had to do was let her come as she wanted and there would be no ACLU, no press, no 15 minutes. They went so far as suggesting a private prom be held (which could easily exclude the gay student). "It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors," district officials said in the statement. You don't give a fock about people's legal rights if it conflicts with your religious views. That's what's focking scary.

I don't recall having to "register" my date; heck in AZ it seems a lot of kids just go in packs without specific "dates." She could have just showed up. Not defending the school; they are clearly backwoods hicks. Just agreeing that she wanted this to become an issue.

Chronic Husker 86 Posted March 11, 2010 She could have just showed up. Not defending the school; they are clearly backwoods hicks. Just agreeing that she wanted this to become an issue. School policy requires that senior prom dates be of the opposite sex. Like Me_2006, you're expecting her to just accept the discrimination. It's very unlikely she'd just be able to show up, seeing the school's already laid-out policy.

Basically, you're saying it's OK to discriminate against gays and they should have to follow whatever anti-gay policy is set. Fock that. She's a girl, she can wear a dress. She can go by herself as can her date and the can dance and do whatever the fock they want to do before and after the dance. But the dance is a school function and there are rules. I'm so focking sick of seeing us cater to the minority at the expense of the majority. I'm glad they focking cancelled the prom, the selfish little witch was the one who went fame hunting by calling in the ACLU and hopefully the selfish little witch pays the prices for it socially for the rest of her life. FeelingMN 273 Posted March 11, 2010 "It is our hope that private citizens will organize an event for the juniors and seniors," district officials said in the statement. "However, at this time, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Itawamba County School District, after taking into consideration the education, safety and well being of our students." Didn't know lesbos wearing tuxedos were such a safety hazard. I guess to the ignorant, any change from the status quo is perceived as an affront to personal well being. Nice. Again, you're expecting the girl to give up her legal rights and just "go along". The fact is, the school's rule was not legal. Instead of allowing her to come as she liked and follow the law, the school chose to shut the whole thing down. Why shouldn't the school have to abide by federal law? And there's rules against weapons, drugs, porn, etc on school grounds. If someone was in violation of those rules, an entire school function wouldn't have been cancelled. They would have punished the violator. But in this instance, they have to cancel prom?....really?....because a lesbian wants to bend the rules? Whatever. The school knew what fight was coming and knew they had no leg to stand on...they knew they'd look bad for isolating the town lesbos because of their 'rule'....so they just cancelled the thing.....they took the easy way out....they ruined it for everyone....not some kid who's simply trying to express who she is. I applaud this little lesbo for standing up for herself....for her rights. Here's to you Mississippian Lesbian
Chronic Husker 86 Posted March 11, 2010 I'm not "expecting" anything. I merely pointed out that if her goal were to be at the prom with her girlfriend, she could have probably accomplished it. Probably. If she had to sneak around the school's own discriminating policy. Or she could have called a civil rights lawyer and forced the school to comply with national law, beforehand. Are you now criticizing her for being diligent?

Box cutters are legal, but you can't bring one to a school. Cancelling a party isn't denying anybody's rights. I support individual rights, but there was no violation. How is she being oppressed? No party? All proms will start to be cancelled because schools have a no tolerance policy towards controversy.

Exactly. There are many rules in life I don't agree with, but they are the rules. There are many ways around certain rules and this carpet muncher decided to take on the rules and she gets what she deserves.

FeelingMN 273 Posted March 11, 2010 Agian, how does that descriminate against gays? Presumably, same sex dates are not allowed to attend together(and who goes to prom without their date?....since you probably didn't attend, the answer is nobody).....which is to say, the school can arbitrarily decide who attends, and who doesn't. So explain to me how this is any different than the school saying dates must be of the same race? 'Cause, let's face it, if the school said that, ain't no one here arguing in defense of the school. BunnysBastatrds 2,709 Posted March 11, 2010 Probably. If she had to sneak around the school's own discriminating policy. There's a "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy in the millitary. It's ok to be gay. FeelingMN 273 Posted March 11, 2010 The rule applies the same to all students, regardless of sexual orientation. So how does this descriminate against gays? But the rule....dates must be of the opposite sex...isn't applied the same to all students. It's not applied the same to gay students. By definition, how could it? Again, would you have a problem with the school saying all dates must be the same race? Blacks with blacks....whites with whites.....when they get inside the school, hey dance with whoever you want....but you must arrive with a same race date. I think people get uncomfortable with this but I think the rule is, generally speaking, aiming to serve the same end....which is to substantiate their (the school) bigotry. Chronic Husker 86 Posted March 11, 2010 Again I call bullsh*t. There are a thousand ways she could have gone with this. Anywhere from not attending, to full on surprise attack visit, and everything in between. The second she got the aclu and the press involved, she gave the school no option but to cancel or give in. She wanted to get her 15 minutes of fame, she got it. So, your suggestion is she should have just not showed up and allow herself to be discriminated against. Or go with an "attack". How about the school follow the law, instead? Also, the ACLU is petitioning to force the school to keep the prom on. The ACLU will ask the court in the next few days to grant McMillen a preliminary injunction ordering the school to reinstate the April 2 prom, let McMillen and her girlfriend go to the prom together, and let McMillen wear a tuxedo to the event. You can say that she's just seeking her fifteen minutes but as soon as public schools, paid for with federal funds, understand they can't discriminate against gay and lesbians, there will be no more need for the ACLU to file lawsuits forcing schools to comply with law.
