Best punk band ever?

Recommended Posts

I can't think of a better one than the Dead Kennedys.

Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables is one of the single best punk records of alltime - it's flawless from start to finish. Frankenchrist and Plastic Surgery Disasters are both awesome. In God We Trust is a terrific hardcore EP. They started to tail off from there and if there's a knock against the DKs it's that they didn't put out many records, but you could say that about most punk bands. The only other serious challenger I can think of is the Clash, and after there first record I'm not sure any of their music was punk anymore.

Can any other punk band compete with the mighty Dead Kennedys?

Never really listened to much punk. The only ones I really liked were the sex pistols and the Clash. I like the Ramones in small quantities but everything they did sounds the same to me and I get bored listening to too much.

Eta - I love the rhcp's but I never considered them a true punk band.

The only true punk bands that I like enough to compare them to DK is obviously the Sex Pistols, and a lesser known band called The Subhumans.

The best definition I found for punk rock:

punk rock is characterized by harsh lyrics attacking conventional society and popular culture, and often expressing alienation and anger.

Yea, I guess they would rank up there also.

My favorite would be The Clash. Not sure if best ever. Probably Ramones.

I kinda did actually, but i think my definitions of punk were wrong. Come to think of it, other than the RHCP, i don't really like punk, so i don't know why i even replies other than to provide humor with a youtube link.

With all due respect, I can't agree with the Ramones, Pistols or the Clash. I like all three bands but I don't think any of them stack up to the Dead Kennedys.

The Ramones get points for being real frontrunners but let's face it, every one of their albums sounds exactly the same. If you have their debut and Rocket to Russia that's pretty much all the Ramones you need. They only ever had one sound. It's a great sound, but there aren't many standout albums or tracks in their catalog.

The Sex Pistols had exactly one studio album. Nevermind the Bollocks is a great, great record but ... it's one album. They were also sort of planned by Malcolm McLaren like a modern day boy band and that IMO calls into question how punk they really were. But the big knock is the fact that they had one album.

The Clash were arguably a better band than the Dead Kennedys, but how much of what they did really was punk? Their self-titled debut is definitely punk and part of London Calling (one of the best rock records ever), but for the most part I think they were a brilliant rock band - not punk.

So I have to go with the Dead Kennedys based on a consistently punk / hardcore sound, the fact that they put out multiple great records and one all-time classic (Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables), and a consistently punk point-of-view: They were the meanest, nastiest band ever and some great focking musicians, too.

Dead Kennedys :shocking:

Does RATM count as punk or are they like punk/metal/rap?

No love for NoFX or Bad Religion either? Circle Jerks?

Meh. To each their own.

I think you gotta give the Sex Pistols the nod for creating it though.

I opened this thread thinking, "How many posts until some clown says Green Day? Two?"

I give CTT a pass, though. He's too young to know.

No, trust me. We're old enough to know Green Day sucks rod. You're allowed to listen to Good Riddance at graduations or other sappy events, otherwise, no. Just no.

The Circle Jerks deserve mentioning.

lyrics:

Anarchy! Kill a cat <_<

Shoot James Brady in the back

Raise an army of rabid rats

Beat your neighbor with a bat

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

Anarchy! Go ape sh1t

Let them know you're sick of it

Write your congressman, tell him he sucks

He's only in it for the bucks

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

We're all potential anarchy burgers

If you wanna be free

Order yourself an anarchy burger

Hold the government, please

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

America stands for freedom

But if you think you're free

Try walking into a deli

And urinating on the cheese

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

Say "fock" in front of your mom

fock Go to school naked!

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

Anarchy burger!

Hold the government

Pretty punk lyrics if you ask me :headbanger:

NoFX - no. Bad Religion and Circle Jerks are both good but IMO can't stack up to the DKs.

They didn't invent it. The Ramones beat them to it, unless you consider the Stooges punk.

Are the Plimsouls considered a 'punk' band? If so, I vote for them. They certain would fall under my favorite if not the best catagory.
