I lost 23 lbs in a little less then 2 months...my body fat was crazy low.

Calipers are insanely inaccurate, from what I've heard. I'll bet you were much lower than you think you were. Donald Driver maintains between 3.8% and 5% body fat, and he says that the only good way to measure your BMI is through full submersion.

It's about diet, and maybe genetics, I guess. I was extremely lean all the way up to my 30's, and then I slowly gained about 50 pounds over 8 years. I decided I didn't like how I looked enough, so I stopped eating processed foods, and started eating the right things. I can tell you that grass-fed beef had the most dramatic effect on me. Natural animal fats high in Omegas become a fat-burning engine in your body. Sounds counter-intuitive, but the science behind it explained why, and it has worked.

 

My wife has had a 6 pack for 20 years because of her diet; she finally got me to stop eating the stuff I used to, and it has worked incredibly well. I'm a believer; I just don't want to regress - and I worry that getting older is going to make it tough to maintain where I am right now.

I'm sure Donald Driver is one of the leanest guys in the country. He is a physical specimen on leanness. But I have a problem when he says 3.8% body mass. Even the immersion test is only accurate to 1%. So, he should be calling that 4%. Another thing is that the immersion test is still based on formulas that make assumptions on bone density. Athletes have been found to usually higher bone density so therefore their fat content is often underestimated.

 

Next time you see Donald Driver tell him there is a more accurate test. I forget what its called but its done with 2 xrays. One absorbs the fat and the other does not. Then they subtract one from the other. Its the most accurate test out there although its pretty new.

 

3% is usually considered the absolute minimum for health. Males have 1-3% essential fats. Females are higher. I believe athletes are usually in the 6%-15% range. Some of those bodybuilders get in the really dangerous zones for competition.

Interesting info on the X-ray thing. I think Donald knows about this, but refused it because it doesn't matter to him that much, and because he didn't want exposure to X-rays for something like self-measurement.

 

I've told him that the type of fats he ingests (I'm a proponent of natural animals fats, but the type of fats has to be from the right animals, particularly not from grain-fed/hormone injected, etc) is going to be very important going forward as he gets older. It is my belief that a diet that replaces natural butter (not processed, and/or from grain-fed cattle, but rather grass-fed cattle) with things like soy butter are actually extremely bad for you, and reduces connective tissue resilience. I believe things like hardening artery walls, deteriorating cartilage, tendons and ligaments can all be traced back to what contemporary culture says we should be replacing traditional - and good for you - foods with.

 

A low fat diet is not good for you, IMO. A diet with the right fats is the right way to go. I believe that following a diet that includes the correct animal fats actually burns fat in your body; not the opposite.
