Ryan Torain

Recommended Posts

I don't care what you've heard from Redskins coaches via the news or what Shannanigans actually said. Ryan Torain is going to start and get significant carries, he'll be used on 1st and 2nd down exclusively. Hightower will come in on 3rd down passing situations. I've seen both of these guys play and I usually have a VERY Good feel for what will happen regardless of what coaches say in the preseason.

Hightower looked decent in the first preseason game, but it's preseason, he's slow, he fumbles constantly in practice.

Torain has been and can be one of the better backs in the NFL as he proved last year when he played and put up multiple 100 yard rushing games. He is a very smart runner and finds a way to gain yards, sometimes significant chunks of yards on various drives. He's back in practice and will be cleared to resume full practices (from his broken wrist bone) and he will be running full steam week 1. GUARANFOCKINGTEED.

Pass whatever it is you are smoking this way. No WAY that Torain starts. Hightower is the clear starting back. Torain, one of the better backs in the NFL???? Now that's too funny!!

August 2010 -

"Ryan's a guy that's had a lot of injuries throughout his career, both college and pro, and he's overcome those injuries and worked extremely hard for the opportunity to put himself in an NFL game, and that's why I was happy for him yesterday. ... I'm looking for him to have a good NFL career, and knock on wood, that he can stay healthy."

"Ryan's a guy that doesn't have a lot of NFL experience, but he's got a big upside," Shanahan said.

"It's easy to see if you've been around him. I could tell back in Denver when he was a rookie, that he's got it," said Shanahan, who drafted Torain fifth overall in 2008. "He's a top back in the National Football League, there's no question about it. Can he stay healthy? What's a top back? Is he one of the greater backs? Can he separate himself from being a good back to being a great back? What's a great back? A guy that runs for a thousand yards, or averages five yards a carry instead of 3.5 yards a carry? There are so many factors that I look at. But Ryan has the ability to be a top back. And we'll find out in time if he can do that and stay healthy." - Mike "The Rat" Shanahan

The laughs make me even more confident. I want EVERYONE to either laugh at my ideas or say they hope I'm right or agree. Go ahead and post your thoughts if you're reading this. I'll see you back here in this thread at the end of the 2011 NFL season.

I agree with you. Torain has a good yard per carry, he has good speed, makes good reads, and he breaks tackles.

If torain can stay healthy i could see him finishing among the elite.

Chance that Torain stays health, 15%

Are you trying to build your confidence since I traded you my #4 rb Torain for...Santana Moss and Ronnie Brown?

I liked Torain when we drafted. Then I looked at his completetion of only 10 games last year. Then he's already had screws put in his wrist this 2 week short session so far. What's next for this guy?

I am a torain supporter, here goes my argument why he is going to be a top back IF he can stay healthy.

Yco = yards after initial contact

Player	Team	Att.	Yds	YCo	YCo / Att.	Yco%
Mewelde Moore	PIT	33	99	96	2.9	97.0%
Chester Taylor	CHI	112	267	212	1.9	79.4%
Marshawn Lynch	SEA	165	573	440	2.7	76.8%
C Williams	TB	125	437	326	2.6	74.6%
Donald Brown	IND	129	497	370	2.9	74.4%
L Blount	TB	201	1007	739	3.7	73.4%
C Buckhalter	DEN	59	147	107	1.8	72.8%
B Jackson	GB	190	703	510	2.7	72.5%
Ryan Torain	WAS	164	744	536	3.3	72.0%
Mike Tolbert	SD	182	737	529	2.9	71.8%

Many of the backs who rank highly in this category are third down specialists. Last season, Brian Leonard recorded what we thought was an astounding 82% of his yards after contact, playing the 3rd down role for the Bengals. This season, an entirely new benchmark was set. Mewelde Moore, playing a similar 3rd down role for the AFC Champion Steelers, recorded a ridiculous 97% of his yardage after contact. Moore put up 99 yards on 33 carries and 96 of them came after first contact.

Torain is not a 3rd down specialist, in fact he was pulled on 3rd downs last season for Keiland williams, this makes his yards after contact even more impressive.

mt= missed tackles

Player	Team	Att.	Rush.MT	Rec.	Rec.MT	Total MT	MT/touch
L. Blount	TB	201	50	5	0	50	24.3%
Fred Jackson	BUF	222	42	31	9	51	20.2%
Marshawn Lynch	SEA	165	30	21	7	37	19.9%
Mike Goodson	CAR	103	18	36	9	27	19.4%
J. Stewart	CAR	178	30	8	4	34	18.3%
Ryan Torain	WAS	164	28	18	4	32	17.6%
Mewelde Moore	PIT	33	4	26	6	10	16.9%
A Peterson	MIN	283	46	36	7	53	16.6%
Cadillac	TB	125	17	46	10	27	15.8%
D McFadden	OAK	222	30	47	12	42	15.6%

Another stat that puts Torain among the elite; broken tackles per touch.

Torain had a 4.5 YPC last season, even though the redskins offensive line last year was 7th worst in the league when it came to run blocking

28. Washington Redskins (2009 Rank: 29th)

Run Rank 25th, Pass Rank 28th, Penalties Rank 26th

The Redskins at least attempted to upgrade the unit by investing in Trent Williams and trading for Jammal Brown. The only problem being both men were pretty poor. They weren’t alone, with only Korey Lichtensteiger ending up with a positive grade in run blocking, and Will Montgomery the only one in pass protection. Plenty of work still to do.

Best Player: Will Montgomery. Although the only reasons that makes sense involves telling you how bad the rest were.

Biggest Concern: You want a quicker return than the 11 sacks Trent Williams yielded. Even if he makes drastic improvements you’ve got plenty of other candidates waiting to step into the breach.

The knock on torain is not talent. The downside with torain is he makes Pennington look like an ironman.

"Guys Torain is going to be a beast, it doesn't matter what Shanahan says"

"You're wrong"

"But look what Shanahan said!"

Does not compute.

That was just for that poster's benefit since he didn't say it doesn't matter what coaches say (I did), so I was refuting what he posted by backing it up with what the head coach said, not that I think it proves anything, but thought that poster might think it was significant.

R. Torain is only 25 years old.

He was drafted by the Broncos when Shanny was still the head coach over there. He was 'suppose' to be the next BIG STAR running back, but was shipped out of town when Shanny was fired. The same knuckle heads that got rid of Torain also got rid of Hillis. As soon as Shanny was hired by Washington, guess who he brought in to compete for a RB spot on the team? R. Torain. The prodigy RB that he was grooming during his tenure in Denver will be groomed at Washington instead. When Torain was healthy, he's been given the chance to prove himself and he's done a good job. The numbers don't lie.

8 Games

164 rushing attempt

742 yards

54 (longest rush for season)

4 Rushing TD

18 Rec

125 Rec yards

2 Rec TD

Folks, those are RB2 numbers. 'IF' healthy using those numbers to project out to 13-15 games, you got yourself a SOLID RB2.

Look at his receiving numbers. This is an every down running back in the league. For a guy currently being drafted around the 8th round i think he's good risk/reward.

Redskins homer here.

Take the guy after you have 3 RBs. HIs injury risk is crazy. I was joking with my Skins homer friends about Torain and injuries one morning...and that same afternoon he breaks his hand during DRILLS.

While he's healthy and IF he gets the starting nod, start him every week with confidence.

Shanny the genius also made two genius draft picks with RBs in Roy Helu and Evan Royster. That's a real problem since Shanny thinks he is a masterful RB drafter. Those guys are going to get real looks since they are his babies.

I can see where he has the talent to be fantasy relevant. The main problem I see is that he plays behind a horrible O-line (no. #28 according to fftoolbox rankings) with either John Beck or Rex Grossman as quarterback. That is about as bad as situation gets.

The O-Line actually improved significantly when we shipped Casey Rabach out in the off season. He was by far the worst, weakest, on skates Center in the history of the NFL. The O-Line this year will be better. Not great, but better.

I have been buying Torain whenever I can and backing him up with Helu. Hightower will be on the bench once he fumbles twice in a game, which will happen. Shanny hates fumbles and Timmy is a legit fumbler.

Yes, agree.

He should not be drafted as one of your starting RB but an incredible complement to your bench and RB depth.

Tim Hightower 15 rushes 27 yards which is 1.8 yards per carry.

Get TORAIN in there!

He hasn't fumbled yet. It's coming though.

As a skins fan I'm rather disappointed to see torain get zero burn. ATV is their best back. He's just a beast to bring down.

I actually picked him up yesterday in anticipation of trading him to the Hightower owner. Now, I'm thinkin' I might want to keep him.

Keep him. He's actually very talented. But made of glass. Big, fast, makes the right cuts and reads. But he's glass. Ride that train until it breaks down.

Talent has never been an issue with Torrain, it's durability. He WILL get banged up and miss games. It is not a fluke or an accident that he has only played 14 games in 4 seasons since being drafted. Pick him up - especially if you're a Hightower owner - and be happy if you get 4 or 5 good starts out of him.

I'd rather have Helu.

So you rather have Helu..

And then after Torain's breakout, you make a post you picked up Torain instead.
