What to Expect From Game of Thrones Season Two: More Direwolves, Dragons and Death!

Recommended Posts

:headbanger:

Game of Thrones season two is coming…eventually. Lucky for you, we've got some scoop to keep you warm during the long and bitter winter.

We caught up with executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and author George R.R. Martin on the red carpet at the HBO Emmys party and asked begged for any season-two scoop we could get our greedy little mitts on. Not for us, but for America. OK, we lied. It was totally for us.

So what did they say fans can expect from the HBO hit series when it returns next spring? Plus, we got new Emmy-winner Peter Dinklage fresh off his big win, and his reaction to his name being called is priceless...

Filming on season two is "going well," Benioff told us. "It's tough. We're shooting in three different countries. We have a lot more dragons, a lot more people getting killed. [it's] a lot sexier, so it's going well so far."

He does admit that there are "so many things" that make him nervous: "The direwolves are tough and all the stuff we're shooting north of the Wall is going to be tough with five hours of daylight because we're near the Arctic Circle. Shooting a full day of Game of Thrones in five hours will be challenging. "

Martin, who wrote episode nine ("Blackwater"), says, "We're looking under all our couches for spare nickels in order to actually afford the big battle that I wrote!" (Be right back—we're currently checking under our seat for any spare change.)

Weiss, Benioff and Martin all agreed that Peter Dinklage winning Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series was the highlight of the night, with Weiss telling us, "I was just so happy to see Peter get up there."

So what was Dinklage's reaction when his name was called? "I can't swear on your E!, can I?" he politely asked, before we gave him the go-ahead. (Come on, it's Tyrion Lannister! Show some respect.) "F--k!" Well said, Mr. Dinklage. Well said.

"It was fun. I was nominated with great actors and that's a privilege right there," he added. "A couple of them I know really well and that's always fun. We've been having a sense of humor about it all. That's always important. I am a lucky actor. It's a joy to go to work every day and get the new scripts."

Though he wouldn't tell us much about the upcoming season, he teases, "more surprised that are faithful to the books and a few new characters are introduced that are incredible. We lose some and we gain some."

Speaking of gaining some new characters, we asked Weiss how the show's many newbies (including Stephen Dillane as Stannis Baratheon, Carice van Houten as Lady Melisandre and Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth) are doing. "I'd say luckily, without exception, every single new castmember that we've got is doing such an amazing job so far and exceeding our expectations that it's really been such a joy."

Before you think it's a total lovefest over at GoT, he quickly follows that last bit with this: "We unfortunately killed off a lot of people we love very much and now we've got some new loved ones coming back in to be eventually killed off."

Martin adds, "It's going to be great to see these new characters." Right. Before they die. You kill us, GoT. But don't go changing.

Best show on tv....boardwalk is a distant 2nd

:shocking:

I figured for sure I'd open this and see the obligatory drobeski laugh.

You do realize Game of Thrones is similar to Dungeons and Dragons, right? Don't want any of the fellas down the club knowing you like D&D. :nono:

Yes I do, ...that's where that crap belongs. On tv and in the theatres. Thankfully I was never that much of a loser where I needed to live in pretend world with my 3 other goober buddys pretending to cast spells on eachother.

Preditcion:

lots of complaints will come out of the fanbase once Season 2 starts.

The story/scope is much larger that what we saw in Season 1 - viewers will be expecting immediate and tidy answers to the storylines of Jon, Aria, Joffrey, Tyrion, Dany, etc but there are a lot of "new" characters to be introduced, probably early on -

Stephen Dillane as Stannis Baratheon, Carice van Houten as Lady Melisandre and Liam Cunningham as Davos Seaworth

I expect lots of complaining like, "we're 5 episodes in and STILL don't know what happened to X"

We'll see...

I have the first four, reading 2 now - lots of characters, lots of scope/scale - thoroughly enjoying it, but I can almost see the writing on the wall for the TV audience - halfway thru the first season, there will still be unanswered questions from season 1 and it's gonna' p!ss people off.

They are supposed to be 7 books in total, 5 which are already written. I've read all 5 now and while I agree that this in a very tightly woven complicated spiderweb of a story, I believe there are enough smaller resolutions to keep the viewers engaged.

Actually Game of Thrones is a book, and D&D is a role playing game.

Sorry if this has all ready been mentioned, but is George RR Martin helping write the show as well? I know that many show writers taken their own liberties with the storylines and fock them up.

The True Blood series is a great example, the first season was the closest to the books. After that, pretty much nothing has been the same, and the book series and the show series are two totally different entities.

Yes, Martin is very heavily involved with the series. The first season was almost spot on with the book.

The first season was very close, but it's only going to get harder every season to remain true to the books, with Martin involved of not. Storm of Swords shouldn't be too bad,it's fairly linear and there a just a few new characters coming onboard. But starting with A Clash of Kings there are so many new characters introduced, in so many locales, with so many divergent plot-lines that it's going to be really hard to include them all and still retain the audience's interest. I'm a big fan of the books, but I hope to see them cut major portions so they can do a better job of telling the main narrative.

Reading book 4 now. Maybe they could do more than 10 episodes per season to get more in.

I don't necessarily agree with this. I'd be interested in hearing just what portions you think they could cut out.

Some of the Dorne stuff and some of the Iron Islands stuff for starters. I know these are some of the Kings in A Clash of Kings, and a lot of it ties in later, but there is such an influx of characters and story-lines that I think people might get confused, and/or lose interest. Also, anything about Davos.

That's an interesting thought. I guess it's possible. From my understanding, AFFC and ADWD were never planned as part of the story. Martin originally had thought to pick up the story 5yrs after the events in ASOS. Then decided that in order to fully advance the story, he needed those extra plots contained in those two books.

Personally I hope it stays true to the books. It's kinda like a beautiful and intricate woven piece of tapestry. If you start pulling threads, the whole thing just might unravel.

Night gathers, and now my watch begins. It shall not end until my death. I shall take no wife, hold no lands, father no children. I shall wear no crowns and win no glory. I shall live and die at my post. I am the sword in the darkness. I am the watcher on the walls. I am the fire that burns against the cold, the light that brings the dawn, the horn that wakes the sleepers, the shield that guards the realms of men. I pledge my life and honor to the Night’s Watch, for this night and all the nights to come.

'Game of Thrones' Season 2 Gets April 2012 Premiere Date

Winter is coming ... this spring. HBO has announced 'Game of Thrones' Season 2 will premiere in April 2012. Can you hold out five more months?

No specific premiere date has been announced.

Production of Season 2 has had some weather-related problems. In early September, five people were injured by high winds on the Northern Ireland set. Meanwhile, the cast has been growing as more book characters prepare to make their appearance in the TV show.

The first season of the hit HBO series was honored with 13 Emmy nominations. Peter Dinklage took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series and the show won for Main Title Design.

After Season 1, I started reading the books. Finished # 4 and # 5 is en route.

It was very hard to read book 1 after watching season 1 (never read a book after movie/show before).

Books 2 and 3 are the best ...it is going to be fun to watch

I think people will be happy with season 2... as everyone's favorite - Tyrion - is the 'star' of book 2

[of course Ned Stark was the 'star' of season 1 and we saw what happened to him ;) ]

People complaining they want answers isn't a bad thing. It means they're engaged. BUT If they think they're going to have everything solved by episode 1 of season 2, they're either braindead or didn't watch season 1 or don't comprehend storytelling.

huh? I'd much rather read the book first, get all the little details, then enjoy watching it play out in a 'summarized' show

not vice versa

Yeah these books are much richer and you get a better picture of things than what HBO's been putting out. A Storm of Swords aka book 3 is a great read.

I am different than most. I kind of like seeing movies first, then reading. You have the character's looks already known, and the book just expands on the movie.

I agree that reading the book is generally better, so lemme' 'splain better.

it's about managing my time and resources more effectively.

See, there's a lot out there that I want to read and don't have time for.

Also, I pay ~$150/month for cable/internet/etc and want to maximize that expense - I despise it when I feel like, "there's nothing on" and I'm paying all that per month.

So, I'll read something else and leave GOT for HBO - that way I get to read more and fully enjoy GOT on HBO.

IF I had more time, I'd read and watch - but I don't. So that's pretty much my reasoning for it.

I have watched each episode from season 1 a minimum of 3 times, some I have seen as many as 5 or 6.

I have never in my life been so addicted to a television show.

I normally watch it on Sunday night and then come in the next day and watch it again on hbogo.com

also hbogo.com is just simply awesome.

Reading this gives me hope that someday another favorite series of mine will get a show. It's similar in that there are many details and characters, etc. And the author has been featured in a few of Martin's "short story" types of books that he's eithe edited or helped write.

I am rewatching season 1 right now on demand, at exactly the same pace I am reading book 1. Finished episode 8 last night, read at lunch up to the point where the imp shows up in Lord Tywin's war camp with the mountain people. Pretty cool to follow both simultaneously, as the show has been amazingly faithful to the book, including using the same exact dialogue at key points.

I have noticed the show will occasionally change the order of events relative to the book, but I haven't seen an example where that negatively impacted the show. Season 2 should be fantastic, but ten episode seasons in bullspit. They should be 13 or so.
