Help me out fockers.

Between the wife (36D) and the kids I can't seem to get any time on the laptop so I was thinking of getting some sort of tablet. I know nothing about these things so your advise will be all I'm going on to spend several hundreds of dollars.

I currently have a Droid phone so I'm familiar with that operating system and their apps are mostly free. Nevah owned anything Apple, so I don't know what they have.

So...who's got what and why?

I've been debating on whether to replace my laptop with an iPad. Basically all I need a cpu at all for is web surfing, and photo and music management.

My only issue is I have tons of music and photos saved on external hard drives than I don't know how I'd be able to access with the iPad. I know the iPad doesn't support USB connections obviously. So does anyone know how to get music or photos onto an iPad? I'm guessing there has to be an easy way to do it.

It sounds like your wife and kids will be using the tablet too. Buy something and you get the laptop back.

Better to get a cheaper laptop with a 10-13 inch screen.

Even a cheap laptop can do way more than a tablet.

I had a ipad then sold it. pretty useless device.

That's what they said on cnet. But my kids will be using this more than me and the love the touch screen capabilities. Focking Angry Birds. :wall: But at least I'll get my phone back.

If you buy an ipad thinking you're buying a computer, you'll be disappointed. I have one and actually enjoy it quite a bit but I have no doubt that it'll be supplanted by droid 3.0 tablets.

The Kindle Fire is supposed to be awesome when it comes out. I have an Ipad and really do not do 20% of what it can do.

The Kindle Fire is $300 less.

I would recommend picking one of those up.

Reports are coming out that when it is released in November, it will easily become the second best selling tablet behind the ipad.

The difference:

http://osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/kindle-fire-vs-ipad-vs-nook.jpg

So Kindle Fire is a little thicker, a little lighter, and the screen is smaller.

No camera on the fire, but you don't need one unless you video skype a bunch.

Smaller hard drive. But you don't need much unless you're going to be putting movies on there.

And no 3G...which is whatever.

My buddy has the Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 and is VERY pleased with it.

It runs the Android 3.2 (Honeycomb) OS and is lightning fast. It has an SD card slot, so he can add an additional 32gb of storage.

The battery life is pretty good too.

Please explain.

Not the same power. Office-like apps aren't like the real thing, no matter what people say.

But if your goal is surfing the web and using apps, then it's fine. I've used the camera and it's all right....nothing to write home about. The keyboard is akward to use for long periods of time. I've got MP3s and I stream radio on it. The point is that this expensive for a low power computer with a touch screen. I think prices will go down eventually and then it'll be fine. That Asus Transformer mentioned above intrigues me. I've seen it before and I think this is likely to be what I would go for next. One thing for sure is that with more and more stuff going to the cloud, this concept isn't going away any time soon.

use the icloud or amazon's cloud. there is no storage on your end, everything is in the clouds

This.....

I just bought 2 of them, one for the wifey and one for me. It has an optional keyboard dock that turns it into a netbook. The dock has 2 USB ports, a trackpad, and mouse buttons. Storage is not an issue. Also, the dock has a secondary battery in it that charges the tablet and extends the battery life to about 16 hours combined. And you can get the whole combo for the same price as a 16 gig Ipad2. Without the dock, the tablet is under $400.

All of the tablets have some faults. Android (in this case Honeycomb) isn't as polished as iOS. But most of the Apple apps are a waste. The Eee pad comes with Polaris Office installed, which is a very polished document suite that allows you to create/edit MS compatible docs, spreadsheets, and PowerPoints. The screen is sharp, and the unit has reviewed extremely well. It is, however, wifi only, so if you want/need data connection capabilities (3G/4G), you need to look elsewhere.

I'm very, very happy with mine, and the wifey LOVES hers....

Good luck in your search.

Wifi only is a problem for me as we'd be using it out camping and such. Anyone have a good suggestion for a 3G/4G pad?

also, thaks for the responses so far.

Depending on his phone (said he has Android)...he can likely root it and tether it to his phone's 3G connection if needed.

Other Androids to check out.

Toshiba Thrive

If you don't want to root the phone and tether it...can always pick up a wifi device from your phone carrier (not sure the price difference between that and regular 3g/4g service for a tablet (though, I know some of them...iPad for sure...offer where you can go month to month and turn the 3g on and off I believe...someone else can confirm this)

you are going to pay for a 3g connection for the occasional camping trip? Unless you live in a dumpster you are going to be on wifi for 99.9% of your time its a waste.

Considering my family and I spend about 90 days a year out camping/hunting/ice fishing, I don't mind paying for a 3g connection. I would however like some more info about hooking it up to my phone.

Had my EVO rooted for a while before the last update...then with the update rooting was gone til they got a new hack. Its out there now, but I have not tried it yet and have not needed it.

Nice to have when there is no wifi available.

And to note...I have not done this with a tablet yet.

Im actually trying to figure out which I want or if I want to wait for the iPad3.

Also considering:

Asus mentioned above (and probably the favorite of mine with that keyboard with trackpad and extra battery)

Toshiba Thrive

Samsung Galaxy (newest versions)

-having USB and other expansion would be nice...

-the downside of an iPad is you are stuck with whatever storage you buy + the cloud...

-upside is with their cloud and syncing (if you are ok with iTunes), if I decide on the iPhone 4s to replace my EVO in the next year, having an iPad would be great for the syncing. If I DL something to the phone, it syncs through the cloud and i have it available on the iPad and vice versa. Currently only apple product I have is an iPod nano.

I think we have a winner. :first:

My daughter might actually buy herself one. I had a look at the current Transformer and it looks real good. If version 2 has these specs, the iPad 3 will have to get better quickly because I think the Transformer 2 will set the bar.

If you haven't bought anything yet, you might want to wait for a bit.....looks like the Asus Transformer 2 will launch soon and be a serious upgrade at a slightly higher price.

Sounds great. Will want to see what the iPad3 will be offering...but if I can't wait, could be the Asus for Christmas for me...get the docking keyboard later if I decide I want it.

There are rumors that the iPad3 may be more expensive than the 2 because the 2 is still quite recent and they will not want to reduce its price just yet. If it is more expensive than the Transformer2, even if it sports a quad-core and a retina display, I think they might lose big market shares. I think they need to update the GUI a little as it might get dated. The Transformer 2 coming soon will put a LOT of pressure on Apple to launch the iPad 3 either faster than they wanted or risk missing out on a lot of sales in the new year. The rumor is that Asus is actually not making a dime on the tablets themselves - their moneymaker is the keyboard dock.

I keep thinking that with Apple...but that sort of thinking underestimates the loyalty of their followers and the "coolness" factor that people get out of owning an Apple product.

Apple has done a great job in branding and getting that loyalty with quality products, solid features, great customer service, and the whole syncing between its products.

And I say this as a guy whose only apple product is an iPod nano.

I don't think Apple is worrying about losing sales at this point.

They will release it on their time...have it ready to go with iCloud to sync with the new iOS5 devices.

Other thing to do is to see what the prices on refurbed 2s will be when the 3 comes out.

I almost bought the original iPad when the 2 came out because the refurbs were so well priced at the time.

True. I have an iPad2 but am not a fanboy so I can see the Transformer's qualities without that filter. But I have to think that the Transformer will be cool to own too. And the iPad GUI does look dated to me when compared with the Android's. It'll be an interesting time in the tablet market.

I love my old style kindle, as I read constantly, and the e-ink is much easier on my eyes than LCD screens.

Does anyone know if the Kindle Fire will have the same e-ink display? I may upgrade if it does...

I cannot believe it's almost Christmas and I still cannot buy the Asus Transformer 2, now they are calling it Transformer Prime. These dumbfucks are missing out on a huge holliday sales season.

Is this the device you guys are talking about?

http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-Transformer-TF201-B1-GR-10-1-Inch-Amethyst/dp/B0067PLM5E/ref=pd_cp_pc_1

I am considering a tablet and I am looking at the iPad 2 or a Samsung Galaxy 10.1" :dunno:

That would be the one.

But the fockers are screwing us over again...Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS (4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgradable) with ASUS Waveshare UI

They are going to charge extra for the Ice Cream Sandwich OS

If you have an iPhone and/or an iPod I'd wait for the iPad 3. That way you could 'share' your music between the three.

I have an iPhone 4 and integrating would be nice, but I don't know if I have the patience to wait. :D
