MDC 7,889 Posted June 27, 2013 American people are more flawed and morally defective and generally stupid than at any other point in our nation's history. Even worse than when most Americans had no formal education at all and settled conflicts through lynch mobs? People have no sense of perspective or conception of how good they really have it. Frank M 181 Posted June 27, 2013 since the 1950's American society has been all downhill Sure it has. I'd love to go back to those days of sexual represion, rampant pollution, blacks and women marginalized. Essentially, back when the Mighty White Male was in large and in charge. Phurfur 70 Posted June 27, 2013 Socially, the country is making great strides. WAY more advanced then they were 50, 40, even 10 years ago. I agree that the internet and video games are a huge social problem. Young kids know way more than we knew as children. And video games have turned a lot of kids into lazy nerds. There is a greater percentage of people on welfare than ever before. More Black Americans are on welfare than White Americans There is a greater percentage of people on food stamps than ever before. We have the lowest percentage of people in the workforce since the great depression. 23 million children are on free or reduced meals at school. +40% of babies are born to unwed mothers. Legalized discrimination against White Americans. We are borrowing 40 cents of every dollar we spend. We borrow $50,000 a second. We are approaching a National debt of $17 trillion. We are printing $3 billion a day. We perform over 3,500 abortions each day Newbie, Winning!

Phurfur 70 Posted June 27, 2013 Unlike you, I refuse to jump on "The sky is falling" bandwagon, Chicken Little. The normalcy bias, or normality bias, refers to a mental state people enter when facing a disaster. It causes people to underestimate both the possibility of a disaster occurring and its possible effects. This often results in situations where people fail to adequately prepare for a disaster, and on a larger scale, the failure of governments to include the populace in its disaster preparations. The assumption that is made in the case of the normalcy bias is that since a disaster never has occurred then it never will occur. It also results in the inability of people to cope with a disaster once it occurs. People with a normalcy bias have difficulties reacting to something they have not experienced before. People also tend to interpret warnings in the most optimistic way possible, seizing on any ambiguities to infer a less serious situation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normalcy_bias
phillybear 366 Posted June 27, 2013 Even worse than when most Americans had no formal education at all and settled conflicts through lynch mobs? People have no sense of perspective or conception of how good they really have it. In inner cities less than half of all kids achieve anything higher than a 2nd grade reading level and do even worse in math. Less than half of all kids graduate. Americans with no formal education back then were at least home schooled by parents that gave a sh!t. Today, we got a bunch of dumb asses that just don't give a fock. Today, we still have conflicts resolved by mobs, or have you not noticed the gangs roaming the streets of our fair city. Why don't you stop sugarcoating and open your mascara lined eyes. TD Ryan2 316 Posted June 27, 2013 Today, we are given more freedom, more choice, and more voice than ever. We are smarter and healthier than ever. Opportunity is more abundant that ever. But KSB is right, we are not "happier" than ever. Why? Maybe because all this freedom and opportunity creates higher stakes for every individual. Sink or Swim... there is no middle ground (i.e. middle class) anymore. There is no "simple life". There is constant change and instability, which created all the freedom and opportunity in the first place, but also creates lots of instability. If you are swimming, you better keep swimming and do it faster, more, better than ever. The pace of life is at the same break-neck speed as the pace of all this change/freedom/technology. One slip. One bad move. One failure to keep swimming and you too could sink. And once you sink, it's tough to get back up. Are we better? Sure, if by better you mean smarter and healthier. But we are not happier. The simple life is gone - and really, that simple life is everything you're working for. The place you'll find it is in retriement - but you can't retire until you're 90 (if you're lucky). Keep on swimming. Keep on swimming.

Bishop82 61 Posted June 27, 2013 Trending in a healthier direction, wiser, nobler, etc. I realize there's a ton of grey area in assessing this...it's a big, vague question. There are many different trends to consider. I'm curious how people feel general sentiment wise though. Is the perceivable good in developments outweighing the bad? (Or maybe it's too close and complex to call). What's more likely in a very general sense...you'll be more or less comfortable with society 10 years down the road? About the same. But to answer your last question, more comfortable with society 10 years down the road.

I remember went I could carry a knife to school and no one was ever stabbed I remember when I could open a lemonade stand on our front lawn, I remember when I could open a Bar or Restaurant and decide if I wanted to allow smoking I remember when kids could eat what they wanted at school. I remember when I was not required to buy health insurance. I remember when we could play dodge ball and tag in school. I remember when I could buy and drink raw milk if I wanted to. I remember when I could fly anywhere in the USA and walk right on the plane without showing an ID and the stewardesses were hired for personality, body type and looks.
