***The Official Seattle Seahawks 2013 Season Thread***

Recommended Posts

Thus far, from all sorts of consensus report from camp after Day One, I think the significant developments for me are:

Jesse Williams is a monster at DT, demanding double teams, overpowering the O-lineman at contact. This guy will start from Day One and is probably the biggest impact player of our draft this year as of right now.

Sweezey looks much improved from last year and is almost a lock to start at Right Guard. Which is really good news, as it further solidifies the line. Nice job, Tom Cable.

Carpenter didn't look good. For his size, he just doesn't fire out and dominate at point of contact like he should. Maybe he's still fighting back from his injuries, but early on, eh, not good.

The best QB on the field was easily Tarvaris Jackson. Wilson looked sloppy, but it's early. Quinn would follow a good throw with a worm burner and then a duck. TJax would actually go through his progressions, make accurate throws, and actually complete passes to the left side of the field which is unheard of. Maybe this guy's lightbulb finally went on. In any case, Tarvaris Jackson, short of injury is the #2. Which is very good news, as I feel a lot more comfortable with him in the game over Quinn.

The secondary looks frightening good. Aside from the typical Sherman, Browner, Thomas, Chancellor, Winfield veteran great play, it's going to be a dog fight to see who else makes the roster, as Walter Thurmond looks healthy again and played great, Jeremy Lane is blanketing people, Jeron Johnson is vastly underrated, and that doesn't even include the 5th rounder from this year Tharold Simon, Byron Maxwell, Winston Guy, and others. I mean, we can't keep all these guys, and nearly all of them could be starters around the league. Might have to trade someone at some point for a low round pick just because you have to.

I felt like the 2012 Seahawks had the best pass defence in the league by a pretty fair margin, so what you're saying doesn't surprise me, and they will once again be very tough to throw against. That being said, I felt like their rush defence might be a bit of an Achilles. Washington was very effective on the ground early on in their wild card matchup, before Griffin III reaggravated his knee injury. With the additions of Avril and Jesse Williams, do you feel like they've shored up their rush defence? I think of Avril more of a pass rusher (which does address their other defensive "need"), but I'm not sure he's known as a good run-stopper on the end. How are you feeling about their rush D?

The rush D pretty much begins and ends with the health of Red Bryant. When healthy, he was an absolute beast in run D last year. Then he started to play hurt and as you could see in the playoff game against the Skins, they were almost making it look easy. I am very psyched to see that Jesse Williams is creating as much havoc as he apparently is. A guy like that in the middle, plus Red on the end, is going to make running against this team a nightmare. Irvin will not be around for the 1st four games for his PED suspension, so I'm hoping that Clemons comes back quickly from his injury, and that Avril and Bennett make some contributions as well. I see Avril as more of a pass-D boost than run-D.

The interior of the D-line was OK early in the season, but when Jason Jones got hurt during the season, the rush defense totally fell apart. Bruce Irvin saw a bunch of playing time on the Defensive end, and he is a huge liability vs the run as he tended to get pushed around. Red Bryant spent a long time last season playing hurt as well. When Clemons went down to injury in the playoffs, that was doom, as he was solid vs the run too.

There has been a total overhaul. Gone are Jones, Alan Branch, the two key guys in the middle. Irvin has been shifted to OLB. Jesse Williams a monster sized DT was drafted in the 5th, Jordan Hill was drafted in the 3rd for DT but he is more of a speed hit the gap type. Signed was Michael Bennett from Tampa Bay, who will play both DT and DE. More speed rush from the outside in Avril, Irvin as a LB in space, and Clemons when he returns from the knee will disrupt when they break into the backfield. Must not discount Antonio Winfield, a huge upgrade over old man Marcus Trufant, as Winfield grades out as the #1 defensive back in the league when it comes to run support. Trufant killed the team as he was poor in giving cushion on 3rd down, and we stunk holding teams on 3rd and long. The defense will be an amoeba like entity, shifting from 4-3 to 3-4 to Big Nickle 4-2-5 constantly. Blitzing defensive secondary personnel will disrupt the read option offenses, the rest of the defense will be hard to play call against and then audible against because they will shift around so much. With a brand new D Coordinator, a guy that ran the Florida Gator's defense very well, there will be new wrinkles we haven't anticipated yet. Red Bryant is a wildcard, as a huge man playing DT but mostly DE, and is excellent vs the run.

In the end, I think Jesse Williams and Brandon Mebane will anchor a good inside of the D-line, Bobby Wagner will anchor the MLB, and the secondary will lay some licks on runners. Up the middle was the major weakness on run defense last year. With so much speed throughout the entire defense at almost every position, it is going to be difficult to run to the outside. Unlike last year, when there were a lot of low scoring conservative games in the 1st half of the season leading to lots of rushing by Seattle and their opponent, I expect the offense to be much more wide open, and instead of a lot of close games, I'd expect Seattle to win a few more blowouts, leading to less rush attempts by the opposition.

The rush defense will be better, not perfect, but it will be improved. I think. Although teams will have to run anyway as what other choice do you have when you face this secondary?

Good article on the Percy Harvin. If harvin has to have surgery he is done for the year per Pete Carroll:

"If you have hip surgery, it's a lot longer than the season," Seahawks coach Pete Carroll told USA TODAY Sports on Friday. "Hip surgery, he's not going to play for the season."

So we can forget a mid season/end of season comeback. If surgery is required see ya in 2014.

However, the season may not be in jeopardy:

The concern is Harvin might have a partially torn labrum, but two people familiar with the injury told USA TODAY Sports the Seahawks are hopeful surgery -- and the lengthy recovery that follows -- won't be necessary, pending another MRI. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because injury details were to remain private.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/seahawks/2013/07/26/percy-harvin-hip-labrum-injury-surgery-seattle/2591055/

Stephania Bell also offered a somewhat positive outlook:

Bell: "The thing about labral repairs is we find these injuries more than we used to find them due to improved diagnosis via clinical examination and imaging. We see them and we see them regularly. But does that mean every labral injury requires surgery? Probably not.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest

Take it for what it's worth; so in the end, if surgery is needed he's done but there's a chance, I would say 25%-30%, that he doesn't need surgery. We'll see. :dunno:

I'm not surprised by Williams. He had a 2nd round draft grade by most "experts" and fell to the 5th due to injury concerns. So yes maybe we have another Richard Sherman 5th round steal. Johnny Jedi loves the 5th round!! I hope Brady Quinn is cut as soon as possible. Lost all respect for that dude when he threw Tebow under the bus. I mean Quinn is the last person who should be critiquing another NFL QB. Listening to the first day or practice Byron Maxwell's name was mentioned as someone who improved greatly from last year to this season's OTAs. We'll see. Give Carpenter a chance. He's knocking off some rust.

Seahawks GM has no regrets about Percy Harvin deal
Tom Pelissero, USA TODAY Sports

RENTON, Wash. — The status of Percy Harvin and his sore hip isn't changing John Schneider's opinion of a Seattle Seahawks team that reached the divisional playoffs without Harvin last year.

"We firmly believe that, just because we were aggressive making this move — and obviously he is an incredible talent — there's a lot of talented guys," Schneider, the Seahawks' general manager, told USA TODAY Sports.

"We like the talent on our football team. There's a lot of talented players all throughout the National Football League. But like anybody always says, it's never, ever about one player. It's about the team."

Acquired from the Minnesota Vikings in March, Harvin opened his first training camp in Seattle on the active/physically unable to perform list after telling the Seahawks he wasn't comfortable practicing on the hip, which had given the dynamic receiver trouble since last month.

Harvin, 25, will get a second opinion from Dr. Bryan Kelly on Tuesday in New York. Surgery to repair a slight tear in Harvin's labrum is a possibility, though the Seahawks are optimistic he can play through the injury.

No matter what happens, Schneider said he has no regrets about giving up first-, third- and seventh-round picks for Harvin and awarding him a five-year contract extension that included $25.5 million in guarantees.

"Going into the offseason, we felt very good about our team and our core of players," Schneider said. "The opportunity to acquire a guy like Percy was extremely unique for us. We had to. We had to do that."

Schneider speaks from experience when discussing the Seahawks' chances without their newest toy. He was a scout for the Green Packers when they won the Super Bowl after the 1996 season without top receiver Robert Brooks, who suffered a major knee injury in Week 7.

Though there are durability concerns with Harvin, he has played 54 of 64 regular-season games over four NFL seasons, racking up 3,985 combined rushing and receiving yards and scoring 29 touchdowns, including five on kick returns.

Before making the trade, the Seahawks spent months digging into Harvin's background, including his injury history and run-ins with both his head coaches in Minnesota that helped wear out his welcome with the Vikings.

"And then as we went down the road with it in investigating that deal, it ended up coming our way and (Harvin) was very excited about the opportunity to come here and play with Russell (Wilson, the Seahawks' quarterback) and get a fresh start," Schneider said.

"We're all somewhat disappointed that he wasn't able to start from Day 1 this season. But that being said, we know that it's a long, long season and it's a marathon and we're going to do whatever we can to put our arms around him and help him out. He's going to get a second opinion, and once we have all the information, we'll make the right decision."

No offense, but what else is he going to say? If he comes out and says, man, wish we'd never pulled the trigger on this deal, he's throwing Percy under the bus. All he's doing is buying time. Hope that the 2nd opinion comes back with no reco for surgery, hope that the recovery process goes well, etc.

Chancellor has the same injury as Harvin did last year. Carroll mentioned it to reporters. Chancellor played through the injury.

One of the players I was interested in seeing this year was Jaye Howard. I really liked him last year but he was only active for 2 games. Nice to see he is making progress and in addition to possibly playing DT, it looks like he will be backing up Red Bryant at DE.

And he’s learning a new position. Defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has Howard backing up Red Bryant at strongside defensive end, along with competing for the starting defensive tackle job left open by the departure of Alan Branch in free agency.

“I’ve been watching Big Red’s film every day, and I’m trying to play like him,” Howard said. “He’s physical at the point of the attack, and I’m just trying to add that to my game. I’ve become more of a student of the game.”

“That’s a spot we felt that he could compete at,” Seattle defensive line coach Travis Jones said about Howard playing defensive end. “He’s got a really strong upper body and really strong hands. He understands how to strike and knock people back. He’s made some good progress. I’m really pleased with the way he’s started with the position.”

No word yet on Harvin.

Surgery needed. Bye bye Percy.

Note to Seahawks: if you spend big money on a guy made of crystal, expect him to be on the sidelines more times than not. Dumb.

Im not for cheering injuries...but this line was funny.

Sucks losing Harvin...but were still a good team without him...Rice will have to step up...same with Tate.

Liking Lynch a bit more in my rankings again too with less competition for touches.

Well, it certainly is a disappointing day, with Harvin expected to miss 50 to 75% of the season. Eh, we still get the offense from last year intact, one that was certainly playing extremely well in the 2nd half of the season. Every starter is back. Harvin was going to be an upgrade to take the offense to another level, but that will have to wait.

That said, this is arguably the deepest group of WRs in franchise history. Sidney Rice, Golden Tate on the outside, Doug Baldwin healthy again and finally getting time to build chemistry with Wilson is in the slot. The draft pick Chris Harper is looking capable in camp. Stephen Williams has looked terrific, coming over from Arizona. Jermaine Kearse is finally holding on to the ball in camp; the guy has talent and really made Jake Locker look good in Washington. Phil Bates looks quite improved and could make the roster. Bringing in the best available WR in Early Doucet (and what's up with all these former Arizona Cardinal WRs?) is wise. It's not like the recent years, when the WRs were so injured and poor, that stiff John Carlson was leading the team in receiving.

Athletes in various sports have gone to Europe for Regenokine injection treatments, which haven’t been approved by the FDA and involve removing blood from the body and separating it to create a protein-rich serum that’s reinjected into the problem area.

Whatever the procedure, Carroll said that he did not expect Rice to miss any games in the preseason or regular season and that he thought it would give the wideout “fresh legs” upon his return. Rice dealt with knee issues late last season and was seen on crutches after the Seahawks were eliminated from the playoffs, but never missed any games last season.

Disappointing obviously as a Hawks fan. The front office is putting the best spin they can on it, since they gave up 3 picks and a lot of moolah for him - what else are they going to do? Pray that he comes back in November or December I guess.

Still they've got Lynch and Michael in the backfield, Wilson has a full season of experience under his belt, and the other WRs are actually kinda good. But a lot hinges on Rice now.

If so, I remember alot of fans liking him and pissed he was a numbers casualty. Although they really were loaded at wr.
