FlaHawker 24 Posted August 9, 2013 I saw we killed them, and Tjax played good. Anyone watch the game? Yes, I watched the game. It was a beat-down! Some quick impressions: TJax played very well; he is clearly heads and shoulders better than Quinn. Christine Michael is nasty! In fact all the RBs (Ware, Coleman) were awesome. Ware and Coleman were particularly good on ST. Others that really stood out to me were: Jermaine Kearse really looks improved; Benson Mayowa, nice pass rush; Obrien Schofield looks like a stud edge rusher--why did the Cards let this guy go? Jaye Howard and Jordan Hill did some nice things; Luke Willson looks like he can be a player. OL Michael Bowie, Alvin Bailey did some nice things; I am really intrigued with LB John Lotulelei--he loos like a tazmanian devil out there! On the downside 1st team O looked sloppy, other than a nice punt return, Walter Thurmond didn't 't impress with coverage. Allen Bradford really struggled early but seemed to get better as the game progressed.
FlaHawker 24 Posted August 9, 2013 Kopy: here is an initial Field Gulls breakdown on some players which mirrors some of my feelings as well: What an bounty of information we now have to break down. After six months of waiting, the Seahawks beat the Chargers in convincing fashion 31-10, highlighting some of their quality depth and hammering home the thought that there are going to be some damn good players that get cut over the next three weeks. The game started slowly and sloppily - a San Diego field goal and a Jermaine Kearse touchdown pass from Brady Quinn represented the only scoring in the first half, but Seattle's backups, led by Quinn and Tarvaris Jackson, ran away with it in the second half. There will be much to discuss this week, but here's a snapshot: - Alvin Bailey impressed the hell out of me today. I believe he played all but the first quarter at left tackle today, and the way he mirrored in pass pro and fired off the snap in run blocking had my jaw on the floor at times. Not kidding, I'm sitting here just beaming about it, that's how good this guy played today. As my colleague Thomas Beekers put it, "Bailey was straight-up throwing people around. Pancake'd. Might be the UDFA find of the season." Having a quality, dependable backup left tackle is a true luxury - we all know that left tackle is one of the ultimate premium positions in the NFL, and Bailey looked like the real deal. Amazing, considering he was a strong-side guard in college. - Stephen Williams caught two passes for 83 yards and a TD, and almost reeled in another deep bomb. I was texting with Davis Hsu and Derek Stephens earlier today and more or less professing my love for Williams - he's a guy that can play the X, get off the jam, and get vertical, and that was on full display today. I don't see how the Seahawks can cut this guy, and I don't think they will. As Scott Enyeart pointed out, Williams may be Pete Carroll's next Mike Williams, Dwayne Jarrett, or Patrick Turner. He loves those types. - Spencer Ware, as Davis Hsu put it, looks like an NFL back. He had at least three very quality blitz pickups in the backfield - preventing sacks and keeping plays alive, and this is of utmost importance. He scored a touchdown on a nice cut right after receiving the handoff, and broke a longish run near the end of the game. Likewise, Christine Michael looked good out there as well - every bit as fast as we'd hoped he'd be, and he looks to be a nice fit in this zone blocking scheme. Christine Michael finished with 16 carries for 89 yards, 5.6 YPC. Ware finished 7 carries for 32 yards, 4.5 YPC, and a TD. Derrick Coleman scored a touchdown on the Michael Robinson Special play, on bootleg play-action into the flats (Spider Y Banana). The Seahawks are disgustingly stacked at running back/fullback. - Benson Mayowa looked awesome. So did O'Brien Schofield. So did, to a lesser extent, Mike Morgan and Malcolm Smith. Ty Powell made some plays and created some pressure. I'm suddenly feeling a little better about the Seahawks pass rush situation. - Jaye Howard really looked good - both inside and on the outside. Michael Bennett, as Jared put it, looked unblockable at times. Howard got a ton of snaps and created pressure from the five-technique spot and from the 3-technique. I'm happy to see this. - Cooper Helfet had a fingertip grab on a diving play - a huge play. However, he also had a drop. Regardless, he looked pretty good out there. Luke Willson had two catches for 16 yards, but it would appear that tight end is still the weakest position on the roster. Maybe a trade? Waiver wire? - Byron Maxwell picked off Chuck Whitehurst and nearly had another interception shortly after that. He looked great out there. Solid depth at the corner position. - I thought that Brady Quinn played fairly well, but Tarvaris Jackson looks like this team's backup, no question. He played extremely efficiently, threw accurately, and definitely looked like an NFL QB out there. So, so much to digest. I'll leave you with this. Jacson will have a little more tonight. This week, we'll break down the Xs and Os because there were some interesting 3-4 looks and some nice pressure packages that Dan Quinn rolled out. In general, the offense was very vanilla, and unsurprisingly, ran the ball 29 times. http://www.fieldgulls.com/seahawks-game-analysis/2013/8/8/4604652/seahawks-beat-chargers-31-
Kopy 559 Posted August 9, 2013 I'll tell you guys what. O'Brien Schofield could very well be the steal of the off season. I like Avril a whole lot, but I got this feeling on Schofield. Just like a Chris Clemmons. He kinda plugs along, is really just another guy. Then comes here and explodes into a great player. If i'm right, Carroll and Schnieder will be sending zona a xmas card this year.

And people say not to wager on preseason football. Bah, what do they know. Easy, peasy, Japanesey. A quick 3 bills on the blowout win. I even talked a couple of other folks to take Seattle. The depth of this team slowly but steadily overwhelmed San Diego. I need to watch a replay, as I was half in the bag during the game.

phillybear 366 Posted August 10, 2013 Michael Bowie #73: https://twitter.com/NSU_Football/status/365813006543749120/photo/1 I've talked up Bowie the past few weeks as a guy that could make the team despite his low round draft status. Also, Alvin Bailey is a focking monster. By the by, this team has a sick number of capable tackles. The offensive line, God help me for saying it, has talent and impressive depth. I'm not sure Giacomini even makes the team, although he finally settled down with his penalty brain farts towards the end of the season. Still need time to digest the game. The starters didn't seem to care. The backups were bad asses.
phillybear 366 Posted August 12, 2013 I've bookmarked the game from someone that posted it to YouTube, so I'm hoping to slowly go over the performances. The running backs did fairly well with the opportunities they were given. The QBs were decent; Tarvaris was very sharp. The WR were inconsistent, but Stephen Williams looks like a guy that has a great chance to make the roster, with the ability to haul in the long ball. The tight ends looked shaky. The offensive line looked outstanding, just absolutely outstanding. This team is going to run even more this year, and we led the league in rushing attempts last year. Unger and Okung are locked into starting gigs. Sweezey played solidly and played as if he was entrenched as a started. Michael Bowie, Alvin Bailey, and Rishawn Johnson were revelations. Just firing off the line, manhandling people all the way downfield, pancaking, opening up holes, and pass protecting on top of that. Sure, it's just one game, but if this keeps up, it serves notice to Moffit, Carpenter, Giacomini, and McQuistan that any of them, maybe all of them, might not make the team. That's how ridiculous the depth at offensive line appears to be, much to my utter shock. I thought it was an area we needed to upgrade this offseason, because of Moffit, Carpenter, Giacomini, and McQuistan. Little did I realize all the kids this team was developing/signing as UDFA that would make such early impressions this year. Wow. Everybody, I mean everybody, is raving about Alvin Bailey. I think the guy is close to being a lock to win one of the starting jobs, possibly LG. I should figure out for sure if he is Alvin or Allen, because he will make this team. Jesse Williams sucked donkey d!ck early in the game. Seattle started off in a 3-4, and Williams was giving up chunks of yards. Once he left the game, San Diego could no longer run the ball. Michael Bennett was a terror the entire game; the guy looks like a huge difference maker. Much like Jaye Howard, who looked so lost last year, and so much more improved this year, working with Quinn again must be the elixir. Jordan Hill came across as much more capable than expected. Some of the younger UDFA were creating havoc. I'm excited about the pass rush we suddenly have. The LBs were mostly nondescript, although I think Farwell played pretty well. Walter Thurmond struggled, but I'll chalk that up to rust in game action from so much injury down time. Winston Guy blew some coverages and might be an early candidate to be cut; I guess Maragos is the backup to Earl Thomas then.

phillybear 366 Posted August 19, 2013 So, what do you do after embarrassing the 2nd best in the NFL in a throwaway preseason game. Yep, you start tweeking the roster. John Moffitt, OG, bu-bye. Traded to Cleveland for DE Brian Sanford. Well, I never like Moffitt's selection in the 3rd round from the start. Y'all know that. This is a clear sign that Moffitt was not going to make this team. He gets a fighting chance in Cleveland to fill in for an injured guy. PC and JS do right by a player by moving him into a decent opportunity. Sanford is one of those scrappy kind of guys, got into a fight in camp with a lineman, hey, let's see what he can do. The other shoe to drop is Carpenter. Will he make the team as a backup, will he I/R for the year, will he get cut. It's refreshing to see the front office not sinking with subpar draft choices, and moving on when the decision needs to be made. Oh, yeah, from last week... The offensive line looked outstanding, just absolutely outstanding. This team is going to run even more this year, and we led the league in rushing attempts last year. Groundhog 24 Posted August 20, 2013 Logical move. Too much depth on the OL now, which is something I can't believe I'm saying. Projected starters: Okung, McQ, Unger, Sweezy, Giacomini Backups: Bailey, Carp, Jeanpierre, Rishaw Johnson, Bowie I know nothing about this Browns' DE, but it seems reasonable to me that they are worried about the pass rush. We can't just blindly assume that Avril, Clem and Irvin will be 100% effective, the first two because of injuries and Irvin because he is learning a new role on this defense at OLB. And what they've shown so far is an inability to be disruptive to the other team's passing game, at least not the first-string.

Both Bailey and Bowie have been impressive and can play either guard or tackle. Other positive observations from the Denver massacre: --Spencer Ware can play. I like this kid! --Jermaine Kearse is going to make this team and contribute this year. Props to him for coming into camp ready to go. --Jordan Hill is coming on. He showed why he was a 3rd round pick. --Allen Bradford continues to good look at LB. --John Lotulelei is a very good player and should make this team. --The secondary is DEEP--Walter Thurmond had a very nice game. --I really like Benson Mayowa--hope he finds his way at least to the PS. Not so good observations: --Winston Guy had another ho hum performance. I think he is in danger of being released. --Jesse Williams does not look good at all. He started camp off pretty well but has declined greatly over the last couple of weeks. Knee issues? Probably. But I won't be surprised if he is cut. --Derrick Coleman took a major step backwards. --Brady Quinn--thanks for being a camp body. --Chris Harper--it might be a good time for the 4th rounder to actually do something. --Darren Fells looks the part but he's not a player. --Tony McDaniel--Not good when you are not on the field and your head coach refers to you multiple times as Tony McFarlane. --Antoine Winfield--a savvy pro no doubt but he is being beaten out by Walter Thurmond. Spencer Ware has surprised me with his running ability. Now that the team is using him as a FB/RB, he is likely to stick because he is ahead of Coleman and the team will keep 5 RBs: Lynch, Turbin, Girl's Name, Ware, M Robinson. Kearse is the current #4 WR, behind Rice, Tate, Baldwin, and just ahead of Stephen Williams. These are the 5 WRs to start the season. In lieu of keeping an extra RB, we will go with less WR to start the season. His lasik surgery has made all the difference in the world. Jordan Hill show good flashes in getting pressure in the pocket. He still gets overwhelmed rather easily on running plays. I just don't think he's a full time player at this point in his career. He is mostly a pass rush specialist that will play some this year, but we can't bank on a lot of production. Allen Bradford has played decently, with some very good plays mixed with mediocre plays. He's learning the LB position and might stick as a backup. Lotulelei might sneak onto the final roster, but is more likely for practice squad or fake an injury or something. He's done OK, but he has to beat out a lot of guys for a spot, and there isn't much room. The secondary is ridiculously deep, and Thurmond is an excellent player that commands playing time. You almost have to think Tharold Simon will I/R because how can he beat out anybody at this point? We will be letting some very good players go at cut time. Mayowa looks good, against the 2nd and 3rd string. I don't think he looks good vs the 1st stringers. Practice squad, for right now. We might lose him, but I can't see him making the roster right now. Yeah, earlier I said that I thought Maragos was going to beat him out for the FS backup spot. Looks that way. Jesse Williams will I/R. He looked great early on in camp, but it's clear his knees are going to hold up, as it's affecting his play. I was totally wrong on his ability to contribute this year. Keep him, rehab him, bring him back next year to compete. Coleman is the 3rd string FB. Not good. Brady Quinn, well, do we keep 3 QBs? I think we have been going with 2 during the regular season, seeing that Michael Robinson is a former QB and can fill-in in a pinch. But I'd like to see Tarvaris come in after Wilson instead of 3rd off the bench. Still, Jackson clearly has outplayed Quinn, and even Wilson, so far in the preseason. Chris Harper will have a very difficult time making this team. Practice squad? I don't think Fells makes the team. Tony McDaniel is giving his coach fits in name pronunciation, but at least the coach has him on the radar. He's massive, and I think his size will allow him to grab a roster spot to clog up the middle. Especially if Jesse Williams goes I/R. We suspected that Red Bryant will get more work at DT, and that has been happening. I can't see Thurmond replacing Winfield, as all the secondary guys are talking about how great Winfield has been. Maybe he's just a veteran cruising into the regular season and flips a switch. If anything, I see Thurmond as of right now being the utility guy, filling in as backup for multiple slots in the secondary for any of the starters. And there is no drop off. Also... I'm still not happy about the TE depth at all. Zach Miller might be the most irreplaceable guy on the team right now, but you could argue Earl Thomas. I don't think we've seen the blitz packages yet that will be unleashed in the regular season. Quinn is an aggressive guy with a lot of flexible players on defense. While Gus Bradley preferred to sit back in a lot of zones, especially late in games, which certainly cost us wins, Quinn will be more aggressive. And why not, with the secondary as scary as it is? Michael Brooks DT is a guy that might sneak onto the final roster. Gotta keep an eye on him.

Good analysis. I agree about Michael Brooks. he has looked good. He kind of reminds of Michael Bennett when he was with the Hawks the first go round before Numbskull Ruskell cut him. Quinn has kept lots of packages under wraps and for good reason. We get Avril and Irvin back this week. Hopefully they play Friday, especially Irvin. Would like to see him at LB. I like Maragos; he is very good on ST as well. I hope he sticks. As for Moffitt situation. I think his departure speaks well to both PC/JS and their approach to building a roster. Neither are beholden to high draft picks if that pick is not producing. They won't keep a name/draft slot around over talent. I love how you refer to our 2nd round pick as girl's name. Seriously, why doesn't he just change that? How do you go through life with that name? FlaHawker 24 Posted August 21, 2013 Sure, everybody knows my libertarian beliefs. But I wouldn't care if Pete Carroll was a raging communist. I don't care that he looks like an old lesbian. It might be mildly upsetting to me to find out he was nice to children and puppies and cripples. Just win the fanbase a SuperBowl, and he'll be lionized forever. This.
