Nick Foles - Eagles QB of the future?

Recommended Posts

Just took a look at his career stats over 13 games played and I believe 9 starts:

61% completion with 19 TDs and 5 INTs, around 210 YPG and a 94.0 QB rating. It's hard to extrapolate those #s over the course of a full season but they stack up extremely well against just about any recent young QB. If Foles was a first round pick there'd be no question that he's earned the right to start the rest of the year and if he plays well, I expect he's the starter heading into next year.

Foles looks awkward and he has a good but not great arm. He's also very slow and not an ideal fit for the read option to say the least. On the plus side he generally gets rid of the ball quick, makes accurate throws and he's got surprisingly good pocket mobility, much better than Flacco, the guy he's most often compared to.

Eagles fans or others who've seen him okay have thoughts in his future? I'm not entirely sold but I do think he's earned the rest of this year as a dress rehearsal and maybe takes a QB out of the discussion as a first round need next year. I think a rush LB or stud DE is a much more pressing need.

:dunno:

As an Eagles fan, I've been vocal in the fact that I don't believe Foles is an NFL franchise QB, based in large part on having watched his college career. Even as a pro, his best performances have come against two winless teams and the Raiders.

That said, his performance on the field this year shows clearly that he's the best QB on the roster. Couple that with Vick's age/contract status/injury prone nature, and I don't see any reason aside from injury that Foles doesn't keep the starting job throughout the season.

He is an odd fit for the offense that Kelly wants to run, and again, I'm not sold that you win consistently in the NFL with either that offensive approach and/or Foles. But you can only do what you do with the guys that you have. Given those parameters, he's earned the chance to show what he can do long term.

He is the QB of the Eagles future if Kelly believes his offense can get by without a more mobile type QB. I wished the Bears would have drafted him or traded for him. He is the real deal.

I dont get how Foles has blown the doors off of the nfl but doesnt seem to get a pass like weeden, tannehill, or locker. Maybe not so much for weeden now.

If locker or tannehill threw for 7 tds they would be heralded as the next great qb. Foles has just played bad defenses is what most critics say.

Talk about a jeckyl and hyde player. In his previous start he looked like he did not belong in the nfl, and then this past week he looks like the next coming of aaron rodgers. Still only a 2nd year player. Hopefully the consistency will come.

I partly think it's the Matt Flynn effect.

Should I be considering Foles over Luck?

Luck has a nice matchup and has been an every week start for me on a very well rounded team that is currently loaded at every position. I almost think Luck might be safer and I don't want to mess up my mojo but I think I at least need to consider Foles.

Sorry to hijack. FFtoday has luck #17th behind Pryor and Keenum? :shocking:

ESPN has him 5th, and I certainly don't think he's that high, but I can imagine him as worse than a back end QB 1 option.

He belongs in the back of that tier 2 group.

It's funny that I also watched him play in college, and I have exactly the opposite opinion of Foles. I think by the end of his career he will be the best QB to ever come out of an Arizona school. That's not saying a whole lot (Jake Plummer) but my opinion of Foles is quite high.

I started him over luck in one league and he scored 8 more points than wilson, who I started over foles in another.

16 td no picks this year. Like I said, if this was jake locker or tannehill many of you would be licking their fantasy boners right now. Foles is the real deal.

I'm in the same situation and I was considering roling with Luck, but after Wayne's injury I'm concerned about his potential. He struggled in the first half against the Texans. Yesterday he played poorly while Foles with and ok-game scored 3tds and still no interceptions. Plus I don't like Pep Hamilton as an offensive play-caller. I am trying to trade Luck for Rodgers and roll with Foles until Rodgers is back for fantasy playoffs.

Foles and the Eagles only have 1 road game left through week 16. The next 3 are home games against a bad Wash pass defense, the Cards and Lions.

Week 15 and 16 look like good match up's. @ Minn and Vs Chi.

Foles looks real good and he has the offensive weapons to put up points which is what is happening. Foles over Luck? Sure, why not? He at this point has better players around him and a much easier schedule..

He routinely face plants after good games. He's not a franchise qb, he's a high end backup.

I think you're putting way too much weight on the Dallas game a few weeks ago. He was battling a groin injury all week and he was having trouble completing his stride, therefore, missing open receivers. Accuracy is actually one of Foles' strengths. He doesn't 'routinely' face plant. He did once.

Prototypical 6'5 strong-armed QB who makes quick decisions and all the throws. Not prototypical for a Chip Kelly offense though. The Eagles will draft another QB in the draft next year. If it's a high enough pick, he'll compete with Foles. If not, I see Foles being the QB until 2015 at least. Vick is done and Barkley doesn't have the arm strength, so it's Foles' job to lose.

He looks nervous in the pocket (and like Tom Petty)

His nervousness is paying off..

I hope he keeps looking nervous while throwing for 10 Td's in the last 2 weeks.

It pays to be nervous.

I wouldn't say he makes quick decisions. I watched the whole game and he seemed to hold the ball a really long time. He tries that against teams with a pass rush and he'll be eating turf all night.

I'll be honest, I spent a lot on him on the waiver (even though no one else did). Sucks that I over spent, but felt I couldn't pass up on his and the offenses upside (seems to be clicking now on that offense). I played him over Romo this week. I may continue starting him over Romo. What is everyones opinion him from hear on out?

He hasn't played enough games in the NFL to "routinely" do anything.

Agreed, but how many QB's on the waiver (last week) had his upside? Keenum maybe and I still like Foles better.

I have no earthly idea if Foles is the QB of the future for the Eagles, but I do however know that he is the QB of the future for The Infidels.

He held the ball too long and underthrew the two deep balls he completed by several yards, but he is accurate as hell on those intermediate routes, so that's good. I wouldn't compare him to Warner. I'm not sure if he doesn't have the arm strength to get the ball deep or what, but if that's the case, defenses will exploit that.

Looks like Foles is the man.

I got this from my terrible MyFantasyLeague.com site which I can't stress enough shouldn't be used. I'm just finishing out the season on my crapass site, and running to ESPN or Yahoo as fast i can for next season

(Rotoworld)Speaking Monday, coach Chip Kelly confirmed Nick Foles will remain the Eagles' starting quarterback going forward.

Analysis: "16 touchdowns, no interceptions," Kelly said rhetorically. "Why would we change?" It's refreshing candor from a coach who could have easily tried to hide the obvious truth behind banal coachspeak. Michael Vick (hamstring) might not be healthy enough for Week 11, anyways, but it's clear the starting job is Foles' until further notice. He'll be a legitimate QB1 against the Redskins' pathetic pass defense on Sunday.

The good news is if you have Vick is he's going to go nuts when Foles gets his concussion soon.

Vick only plays his best when he has too.

Not sold on Foles but that offensive system is for real. Basically this is a rebuilding year and if they hadn't had to start Barkley for the majority of 2 games they would probably be leading their division.

I think with some good solid drafting this year and a couple of defensive signings things could improve dramatically for the Eagles. They need to steal a page out of Schnieders pagebook and churn the roster for the rest of the year.

Aren't they tied for first in the division right now?

 You beat me to it.

As a Ravens fan, Foles is very similar to Flacco's run last year in that a lot of his success came on low percentage deep plays and some downright lucky plays. For example, against the Packers Foles' numbers on throws over 20 yards – 3 of 4 for 132 yards and 3 touchdowns. Not to mention the long TD pass to DeSean Jackson that was completely lucky in the way it popped right to him. In the long run, the luck evens out and success regresses to the player's mean.

That said, I am a believer in the "AD" scale, which means any QB better than Andy Dalton is a franchise QB and beneficial to his team, while any QB worse than Andy Dalton is detrimental to his team. This year I think Foles is on a legitimate hot streak that somehow encompasses him making some of his own luck, and is currently ahead on the AD scale, but, in time will cool off, much like Kaep has this year.
