SUXBNME 1,512 Posted June 17, 2014 Eddie Van Halen is talented. Again, not a fan of his music ... but I won't discount his talent. Underated LOVE that song. Hear it on the radio all the time, know the lyrical meaning, but have never seen the vid before. Good posting
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 I can't sing that song. Makes me cry. But I can sing this: Far more difficult.
SUXBNME 1,512 Posted June 17, 2014 Google is your friend. He played guitar. You dumb fock....I post a vid about a singer who hits multiple octaves, say "beat that" and you try and raise me a guitarist? Apples and oranges. Talented guitarists, dime a dozen. Singers, no so much. Speaking of Yngwie Malmsteen, one of my favorite songs from him was "Far Beyond the Sun" Absolutely no denying his technical skills, right? I found someone who covered it and I like his cover better. Why? Mebbe because he looked like he had more fun doing it, or mebbe because I liked his version better. Is the below technically as talented as Yngwie? I'm not qualified enough to know, but I sure like it.
SUXBNME 1,512 Posted June 17, 2014 I can't sing that song. Makes me cry. But I can sing this: Far more difficult. Love me some Pearl Jam. Rear View Mirror or Once are prolly my current favorites from 10. Well ,then again there was Why Go and Alive. Aside from Jeremy (which I'm kinda sick of) was there reaqlly a bad song on that album? Aside from Jeremy (which I'm kinda sick of) was there reaqlly a bad song on that album? Ten ... and at the same time Nirvana, Nevermind ... Both from Seattle. It was an amazing time for rock and roll. That's indespuitsble.
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 Kurt Cobain. It wasn't so much that he had a natural talent as a singer, or a guitarist ... it was that he had his finger on the pulse of punk rock, and he made it so it was for everyone. I remember teaching guys in my frat how to slam dance to Nirvana.
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 And, let's not forget: Particularly in a thread about talent. I can't sing that. I can't hit the high notes at 2:20. I can falsetto the "ohhh ohh" at 2:38 though. If you want to learn to sing, this is a good song to practice. Hard. Level 10 shiat. Possibly the most impressive vocal range showboating in rock and roll history. Amazing talent ... that kinda range and control. I liked Temple of the Dog more than Soundgarden ... but that does not take away from the fact that Chris Cornell can sing better than Eddie Vedder. Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 In the world of talented rock and roll vocalists ... Chris Cornell has gotta be top 3. Gene Simmons ... i guess he is on the list somewhere in the millions.

There was this thing, and I think Soundgarden kinda fell victim too it, where it was all about being musically impressive. Pulling off things that other people would consider difficult. That's not the only bar you hafta clear. Anyone, with enough practice can become very good at something.
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 Top 5 all time song for me, most people would never guess. When I first heard the Casio, canned drum beat, I thought ... This is gonna be bad, just like every other song I have ever heard with the canned, Casio drum beat. I was pleasantly surprised. Seriously, top 5 of my all time favorite songs. Not a lot of "look at how talented I am" ... but there is some "Smart people will know how clever this is."
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 Dude, some people here used to post how much they liked Snow Patrol ... so don't worry Sux, even though you have bad taste, you are not the gheyist person here.
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 Btw, Snow Patrol sucks! I only pretended to like that one song because it was decent.
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 Ok ... It's better than decent .... it's pretty good actually. Turns out ... this is not at all considered their "best song" by their fans .... they didn't get what I was saying. This is their only good song. It's pretty good though. Did not like the rest of what I listened to.

Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 Top 5 albums, in order, all time: Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Nirvana - Nevermind Pearl Jam - Ten Elastica - Elastica Who's Elastica you ask? Only the greatest band out of England, maybe ever ... Besides Pink Floyd. One great album ...and they fell apart. Amazing debut album. "Connection" is the single you might recognize. Crap ass video, but it was 1995. You can almost tell by the expressions on the bands face in the video that they know it is gonna suck. 1:20 But that album ... every song is good on that album. Kinda like Pearl Jam 10 ... right out of the gate, great album ... and they never did anything better than that since. "Blue" is a top 10 song for me. Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 Skill. We are defining skill based on various measurables. Some people are famous,,and have none of it. That's what this thread is about. i think talent, has been pretty well defined.
NewbieJr 541 Posted June 17, 2014 Skill. We are defining skill based on various measurables. Some people are famous,,and have none of it. That's what this thread is about. i think talent, has been pretty well defined. There has yet to be a person or band mentioned in this thread that doesn't have more talent than anyone here. With the possible exception of Milli Vanilli. If you can play an instrument, you have a talent. If you can sing, you have a talent. If you can dance, you have a talent. Even a kid like Justin Bieber has a ton of talent. He may have made kiddiepop music and now has become a punk, but he can play drums, guitar, and piano. He has a great voice and he writes songs. Gwen Stefani? Can write songs and sing. Those are talents. Kiss? They write songs and play their own instruments. Like Patweisers and others have said, not liking their music is not equal to them not having talent.
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 I agree. Other no talent ass clowns should not judge. But. I'll come right out and say it, I have more talent than Gene Simmons as a singer. Then why aren't I rich, and focked thousands of women, right? Marketing. i never wanted to be a singer. i played some bass, I can sing but ... never felt like I had any special, God given talent in that area, so I focused on painting and drawing. i was kind of a prodigy, and got a lot of praise for my skills, so ...it all makes sense. From Art Director to Poker Player ... I know, right away, who's good and bad at the table. I know who is capable of being creative.
Giants Fan 85 Posted June 17, 2014 I was trained to see, really well. I see color almost as well as a woman. Yep .... Sorry dudes, women see color more accurately than us. I'm trained though. I've got some pretty good eyes, for an old dude. Not just for colors, but I can eyeball differences in measurements down to like a 64th of an inch. You hafta learn that shiat. Comes with practice. Nobody is born with those skills. Yuo hafta learn them.

NewbieJr 541 Posted June 17, 2014 I agree. Other no talent ass clowns should not judge. But. I'll come right out and say it, I have more talent than Gene Simmons as a singer. People who write music don't have to be great singers. Or look good. That's the special thing about being a songwriter. Guys like Springsteen and Simmons and Kurt Cobain couldn't sing for sh1t, but they were interpreting their own songs. If all you can do is sing, then you're career isn't going to last very long. Because you're at the mercy of songwriters. And they want to make as much money as possible. So when Rihanna hits her mid-30s and loses her sexiness, the songwriters will know they'll make more money with the next 20 year-old sexy singer coming up. And she'll disappear. That's why people like Taylor Swift will have a long and successful career. Because she writes most of her own material and isn't just a model with a decent voice.
patweisers44 848 Posted June 17, 2014 Notable exception to Newbie's last point would be Elvis Presley. In order to be a one-trick pony, that "Trick" better be really good. Elvis wouldn't have made it if he had to rely on being a singer/songwriter, but with that voice he made a fortune singing other peoples tunes. If Bob Dylan wasn't such a fantastic songwriter he wouldn't have had a career. Same thing for Springsteen to a lesser degree.

If Bob Dylan wasn't such a fantastic songwriter he wouldn't have had a career. Same thing for Springsteen to a lesser degree. Elvis was as lucky as he was talented. He was blessed with good lucks. He had a nice voice, but certainly not a rare one. Hell, I can do a decent Elvis impression. He was bold enough to gyrate his hips when that was considered taboo. That was his gimmick. I think he could also play a C,G, &D chord on a guitar., He had a little talent, combined with good looks and brashness. And hit it big.
patweisers44 848 Posted June 17, 2014 Newbie, I believe you underestimate Elvis' voice. He didn't have much that was extraordinary besides his voice and the gimmicks you mentioned did take him a long way, but his voice was certainly more than "nice"

He didn't have much that was extraordinary besides his voice and the gimmicks you mentioned did take him a long way, but his voice was certainly more than "nice" I'd say it was silky smooth. Looks, voice, moves, and some musical ability. Beyond that he was lucky to come of age at a time when many white kids were hungry for the sound of the "race records" they heard but wouldn't dare bring home. Perhaps more than any other artist in history, Elvis profited from the music of the early blues and R&B greats.

Rock had become so girly with the Warrants and Poisons and Motley Crues that the country was begging for something raw and dirty sounding.
