The ominous math of the Ebola epidemic

Figure this out, keeping exponential growth in mind...

There are several scenarios for how this plays out. One is that the conventional methods of containing Ebola — isolating patients and doing contact tracing of people who might be exposed lower the rate of new infections until finally the epidemic burns itself out. That has been the case in all previous outbreaks of Ebola, although no outbreak has ever been nearly as extensive as this one.

A second scenario is more dire: The conventional methods come too late, the epidemic keeps spreading, and the virus is beaten back only when vaccines can be developed and scaled up to the point where they can be widely distributed.

As the number of infections increases, so does the possibility that a person with Ebola will carry it to another country. This is known as an export.

“So we had two exports in the first 2,000 patients,” Frieden said in a recent interview. “Now we’re going to have 20,000 cases, how many exports are we going to have?”

As scary as that is, imagine what would happen if it's possible for dogs to spread the virus. They are known to carry Ebola, but they don't get sick. Do they shed the virus in saliva, urine, or feces like humans? If so, we're all focked simply because of what dogs do. Tbe lick everything, they stick their noses into everything, and we let them lick us and we pick up their sh1t. I can't think of a quicker way to spread Ebola than that.

We may be doomed.

Over 10 years ago a lot of people here used to rag on me because I had a "go-bag". It was a backpack, with hundreds of different things in it. From spices, to string. Things I could trade, things I could use to make boiled water taste like something. Medications, etc.Padded bicycle shorts. That was the one that got everyone making fun of me .... But when your plan is to escape the city by bicycle ... Yer gonna want all the comfort you can get.

That would be the best way out of a big city, btw ... mass evacuations would cause traffic jams and gasoline would run out at all stations causing pandamonium.

But mountain bikes, can go just about anywhere and require no fuel.

The average 40 year old man with very little experience could cover 100 miles in one day ... but your ass would be sore from the seat.

And if you were wearing an "Ebola suit" ... Be lucky to cover 30 miles. Hafta be in good shape or you might die.

Copy Fatu's trashbag method when you're off your bike and around people.

Frank, hmm.

April 1st 2010

The Obama administration has quietly scrapped plans to enact sweeping new federal quarantine regulations that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention touted four years ago as critical to protecting Americans from dangerous diseases spread by travelers.

The regulations, proposed in 2005 during the Bush administration amid fears of avian flu, would have given the federal government additional powers to detain sick airline passengers and those exposed to certain diseases. They also would have expanded requirements for airlines to report ill passengers to the CDC and mandated that airlines collect and maintain contact information for fliers in case they later needed to be traced as part of an investigation into an outbreak.

Airline and civil liberties groups, which had opposed the rules, praised their withdrawal.

Nice work Obama.

Relax folks....Obama said we wouldn't have an outbreak in the USA.

Was anyone tongue lashing BHO for downplaying Ebola?  I mean, it had like a 40% mortality rate. A president should be trusted to provide honest info to the public.  Why didnt BHO do that?  He shoulda gone through peach mint for it.
