Fanduel & Draft Kings...should we be worried?

Recommended Posts

Since our country as a whole is in fantastic shape, our benevolent government seems to be looking into the legality of fantasy sites. If anyone remembers what happened when all the online poker sites got shut down, these sites may close quickly and without warning. Anyone have any concerns about this? I remember my poker account being frozen. Fortunately I only had a few bucks in it, but I've been building a decent little bankroll on fanduel.

I know, right?

Usually it's the other guys who are trying to force us all to live our lives by their rules.

I found myself asking the wifey this weekend why these draft sites are OK and online poker and online sports wagering are not.

Did anyone lose money from pokersites having regulations tightened? I thought they all just moved overseas and it made it harder to deposit money was all.

WTF is a woman going to know about gambling or sports? They know wich players are the cutest to them, thats it. The only women who gamble are 60yr old asian ladies.

My massive $70ish dollars disappeared from pokerstars if I remember correctly. I can't recall the details, but maybe I didn't withdrawl it soon enough. It wasn't a whole lot of money so I didn't lose any sleep over it, but who knows what will happen when Obama comes calling.

Just for the commercials and the fact Tiki Barber has a show sponsored by one of them I want them gone. And would it be so hard to make the commercials funny or interesting?

DraftKings and FanDuel are making more money than they know what to do with. Add in the fact that they have no defined regulations, and you have the perfect recipe for fraud and tampering. I give it another year before something really fishy is exposed, and the Feds' hammer comes down.

They don't get a nickel of my money especially after that other thread showing that 1 guy sent in same lineup and hit all three big money winnings and hadn't submitted anything else. Seems a LOT more than coincidence that he hit on 3 players owned in less than 1%. Where there is smoke there is fire and those outfits are spending 6 figures on marketing. Fire, fire, FIRE!!!!!!!!!

Neither Fanduel or Draftkings is making money. They both are still spending such a ridiculous amount of money on advertising that all reports maintain they are still in the red.

The big difference between DFS and Poker is that the DFS sites are based in the US. The sites pay taxes AND their players pay taxes. This wasn't the case with online poker. I also don't think DFS is near the threat to the casinos and other lobbying groups as online gaming was. Not to mention DFS has all 4 of the major professional sports leagues behind them.

They're making money hand over fist and preying on the fanaticism that is fantasy sports. Sure they are paying for mounds of advertising, but that amount pales in comparison to the weekly totals they haul in.

Think about it.. the one Draft Kings contest I looked at was $5 entry and there were 92k entrants.

$460,000 :overhead:

Multiply that to the hoards of contests they run, and someone is getting F.A.T. :pointstosky:

They are not paying anywhere near that out.. pockets are full at corporate headquarters.

Like any other enterprise, they are playing to a demand, and striking while the iron is white hot. There is no sign of it cooling down anytime soon. Hell, wished I thought of it, so I can collect all the sheep's wool. :lock:

Hmmmmm... is it a fraud? I am thinking yes to some extent.. Buyer beeeeware for sure.

But hey, I am guilty, I partake somewhat...I am pretty leery especially when the "multi entries" are accepted..

But at the end of the day, it's an added rooting interest and we are all fantasy degenerates... LOL

I play the small dollar ($2-$5), single entry contests and that is fine by me.. and I've won here and there.. But when I look at the "big winner" and see his lineup, red flags go up all over the place. Something is rotten in Fantasyville.

But a fool and his money will soon be.... :D

Neither company has showed a profit yet.

This year, it is estimated that Draftkings and Fanduel have combined to spend about $500 million in advertising. They would have to combine to take in over $4 billion (let's say average rake of 12.5%) in entry fees to make that much in rake. That doesn't include all their other operating and compensation costs, as well as paying back all their investors.

They are still in the "customer acquisition" stage and not really worried about making money yet. Obviously both companies are in great shape going forward though as they have both received over $1 billion valuations.

You're not counting the guaranteed margin. Some contests pay out $1mm in prizes, and only make $750,000 in entries.

I just signed up for yahoo daily fantasy. Yahoo says it's legal in the US except for: Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana, Montana, and Washington.
