i watched it maybe in 2019 and it was laughable how far apart he was from it being any type of actual competition.  I assume it has continued to be that way the past 2 years.

Nope. He just refused to sign their contract.  Competitive eating is governed by an organization and he chose not to participate.

I knew it had to do with a contract. I think what threw me off was the year he showed up trying to storm the stage and security took him down.

You can throw up after the competition is over.  Many do.
