Obama didn’t get us into NAFTA, that was George H W Bush in 1992. And no it didn’t screw the US. And you’re contradicting yourself. You’ve already stated in this discussion that capitalism is good and tariffs are bad (both true) but now you’re repeating the lie that NAFTA was bad for us? How is that? By increasing trade between Canada, the US and Mexico by about a dozen fold? By creating millions of jobs in all 3 countries? By lowering consumer prices? How was it bad?

I wonder how Tim feels about the guy that used to make, let’s say lawn mowers.  He loses his job and then a year later goes to Home Depot and low and behold they have lawn mowers! Did Mexico come up with some new technology to make them? Or is it just about cheap labor and no regulations? Think that factory in Mexico has an HR department? No. But the bank that made it happen does.

Bush tried to get Nafta and failed. Clinton is the one that got it pushed through congress and signed it. Get your facts straight. Why do you think they pulled Bill off the campaign trail in 2016 when Trump made it an issue? Clinton got asked once about it and he said he was lied to by the banks and Wall Street. They sent His ass home.

I feel bad about everyone who loses their jobs due to economic and societal changes. It’s a terrible thing. 
 

But I’m not going to put a clamp on free trade because of it. Free trade creates prosperity. Tariffs are a form of taxation. That’s the root of the issue.

Ross Perot warmed us about NAFTA on the debate stage. That “huge sucking sound”.  Cost Bush the election. Clinton wisely let Bush hang on that and then turned around and passed it. He wasn’t telling those union workers in 1992 that he was going to.  Tim, you’re clueless. At least look at your beloved Wikipedia before you say things that are 100 pct untrue.

The Rust Belt name goes back to the 1950's and gained more traction in the 80;s

 

NAFTA at best can be viewed as having a modest effect on the US economy. USMCA is expected to have a small effect overall on the economy. It's almost as if none of these big picture bills actually address the direct issues that are out there facing the American worker

You want to argue with economists smarter than you or I on this.  And I was even undercutting what some of them say to stay fair. Not to mention that while jobs were lost the belief is far more would have been lost without NAFTA.

Well, he was talking about globalism.  The pursuit of cheap labor for profit is nothing new. That’s what slavery was about.  Places in this country moved to different locales to get it.
