You’ve already stated in this discussion that capitalism is good and tariffs are bad (both true) but now you’re repeating the lie that NAFTA was bad for us? How is that? By increasing trade between Canada, the US and Mexico by about a dozen fold? By creating millions of jobs in all 3 countries? By lowering consumer prices? How was it bad? Hardcore troubadour 15,518 Posted April 27, 2023 I wonder how Tim feels about the guy that used to make, let’s say lawn mowers. He loses his job and then a year later goes to Home Depot and low and behold they have lawn mowers! Did Mexico come up with some new technology to make them? Or is it just about cheap labor and no regulations? Think that factory in Mexico has an HR department? No. But the bank that made it happen does.

I feel bad about everyone who loses their jobs due to economic and societal changes. It’s a terrible thing. But I’m not going to put a clamp on free trade because of it. Free trade creates prosperity. Tariffs are a form of taxation. That’s the root of the issue.
Hardcore troubadour 15,518 Posted April 27, 2023 Ross Perot warmed us about NAFTA on the debate stage. That “huge sucking sound”. Cost Bush the election. Clinton wisely let Bush hang on that and then turned around and passed it. He wasn’t telling those union workers in 1992 that he was going to. Tim, you’re clueless. At least look at your beloved Wikipedia before you say things that are 100 pct untrue.

He backtracked in 2016 because of pressure from Bernie Sanders causing Hillary to reverse herself like a coward. That really disappointed me at the time. Hillary lied about NAFTA and TPP to appease the left. And it didn’t do her any good anyhow; they saw through her. I can’t help what weasels politicians are. Hardcore troubadour 15,518 Posted April 27, 2023 6 minutes ago, Sean Mooney said: Okay Springsteen Well, he was talking about globalism. The pursuit of cheap labor for profit is nothing new. That’s what slavery was about. Places in this country moved to different locales to get it. At least it was in our country. Then they found even cheaper places with no workers rights. It’s not like they went to Europe. They went to places with an uneducated populace and no regulations. Nafta was a full frontal assault on organized labor. That’ll teach people to stand up for themselves.

HellToupee 1,827 Posted April 27, 2023 48 minutes ago, The Real timschochet said: Obama didn’t get us into NAFTA, that was George H W Bush in 1992. Bill Clinton for forks sake Quote On this day in 1993, Bill Clinton, the first Democratic president in 12 years, signed the North American Free Trade Agreement into law. The pact, which took effect on Jan. 1, 1994, created the world’s largest free-trade zone. At the time, Clinton said he hoped the agreement would encourage other nations to work toward an even broader world-trade pact. The deal approved by the United States, Canada and Mexico 24 years ago eliminated virtually all tariffs and trade restrictions among the three nations. Its passage marked one of Clinton’s first major legislative victories — although in both the Senate and the House more Republicans than Democrats voted for passage. In 1992, Reform Party presidential candidate Ross Perot — who had challenged both Clinton and George H.W. Bush, the incumbent president who was seeking reelection — argued that if Congress passed NAFTA, Americans would hear a “giant sucking sound” of companies fleeing the United States for Mexico, where workers could be employed for less pay and without benefits.
