That's a card I'd sell right away if I were you.  Topps Fire just came out and values are high early in the release cycle.  If you want to invest in Bichette, buy his 2020 topps series 1 PSA 10 or his 1st Bowman Chrome Auto PSA 10.  Good luck

I have access to 8 Topps chrome boxes.
would @vuduchile buy them for $40 a piece?

If they’re blaster boxes, I’d be a buyer at $30.  If they’re mega boxes, $40.

Ok so how much do u think the bichette blue cards are worth in the fire series?  I have one of both his regular rc blue and the other one blue that somebody’s trying to sell on eBay for $50?

Go to eBay sold listings.  It will show you how many have sold and at what price.

Into this hobby for all the reasons the OP is not. I don’t buy anything new. I keep my mostly 80s and early 90s collection in pristine condition. The cardboard on my mass printed collection is worth more than the cards themselves. They are my babies and I will be buried with them.

That said, a childhood friend called me today and let me know he was moving and planning on throwing his collection out but I could have them. It’s 4 moving boxes worth of the same 80s and 90s stuff with some less than valuable shiit from the 60s and 70s. I love baseball cards.

Here's a surprisingly good article from yahoo.  Good stuff.

From ruins to renaissance: How the sports card market became appealing to investors

Good summary of what so many have been saying for the past couple of years.

For as long as card collectors have been around and the amount of money exchanging hands, this market is still very unsophisticated.

Look at where Sports Gambling and Fantasy Sports were 10 years ago.   They’re now thriving, legal industries supported by technology, apps and all media outlets.

In 5 years or less,  the card biz will be there too.

And sports cards give better returns on average.

The whole thing is pretty simple really.

The card makers built some scarcity into the products when they introduced autographs, relics, colored parallels and numbered cards.

Lots of sports fans, gamblers and ff players have figured out that buying a player’s card is actually buying a piece of that player’s success or failure.

Mahomes wins a a playoff game, prices rise.   Jackson loses a playoff game, prices dip.

Kershaw finally wins a WS, prices rise and so on.

@vuduchile

Release date for the 2021 Bowman cards is April 21st.

I haven't bought a pack of cards in 25 years. What is the move here - go to Target and buy up all their packs and open them in 10 years?

I'm in this year.

Nice. Crack a couple beers and enjoy yourself going through that stuff. I'm sure 90% of it you might not care about. But finding that 10% will be fun as h3ll.

It took me right at a month to go through them all, but you're right. It was fun as hell. Found some nice gems in there and I invested in some glass wall mounted cases to put in my office.

If you can find them, yes.  Buy and hold them sealed.  Bowman is good for prospects.  But Topps Series 1 will be loaded with flagship rookies.  Get those if you can.  Frankly, your chances of finding them in the stores before the scalpers clear them out isn't very good unless you live in a rural area with a Walmart that carries cards.  Right now, we are buying as much 2018-19 and 2019-20 basekball as we can, but it's expensive as hell.  Also, NFL Prizm comes out next month and those will be super hot.

A guy that works for me owns some sort of board game company. Said he will be able to get them for me wholesale direct from distributor. We will see how that goes.

I’d be interested in talking to him if he can really get allocations of sports cards.  He may even use the same distributor we do.

We sell sports cards and some board games in our shop, but can barely get new stuff allocated.

We pre-order a case of every new release but they cut us to 1-3 boxes every time.

The guys who are spending millions annually are getting all the inventory right now.

Our applications to buy direct from Topps and Panini are being reviewed so we’ll see how that goes.

Yeah.  Prizm football and Topps series 1 pre orders were due months ago.   I’ll have to check my pre order list for the Bowman.  I don’t remember seeing a ore order date for that one.

So I am pulling the trigger and selling all my high end cards.  Looking at listing my top 20 cards with Heritage Auctions or Goldin. Any of you guys ever done any of these auctions?

Sorry to break this to you, but your friend is an idiot.

Tatis and Soto rookie psa 10’s are going for $300   Mike Trout flagship rookie is going for $3K.   Luka Doncic rookie psa 10 is going for $2K   None of these cards are 50 years old

If you have this exact card in this listing and it’s well centered, with sharp corners and edges, get it graded.

If you have a different card, with soft corners and it looks like it’s been cut by a 2st grader, then you’re SOL.

Beyond that, get off the Schmidt kick.  He’s not even in the top 100 collectible players.  If you want post war vintage, go with Mantle, Mays and Aaron.

But my OP is really about what’s happening with modern cards and how the market is behaving a lot like a fantasy league.

See I think this is kinda what I was getting at in your other thread when discussing Mahomes/Brady.    Schmidt is an all-time great player, but apparently is not even in the top 100 collectible players.   The chances are pretty low that Tatis Jr. has a career close to Schmidt's, yet apparently his cards are a lot more valuable.  It doesn't really make sense to me.

My best piece is a 2001 Pujols Bowman Chrome Auto BGS 9.5. Subs are 9, 9.5, 9.5, 10. Heritage is offering me -5% which I guess means that the buyer would pay a 20% fee and I’d get 5%. Goldin offered me 0% but I think they’d probably give me -2% or -3% if I pressed them. What do you think?

You have made several informative posts regarding this topic.  What would you pay for the Pujols card Phil is considering listing?

Being an all time great is only part of the equation.  Popularity, charisma, post-career relevancy, card scarcity and other factors all play a part.  Mantle, for example is an all time great but certainly not the single greatest player of all time.  However, his cards are by far the most collected for those other reasons.

And I agree that Tatis will likely not have a career as great as Schmidt's, but that doesn't matter in TODAY's market.  Gambling on prospects/rookies/younger players is huge business. It's what's driving the modern card market.

If you want to "invest" in cards, buy Hall of Famers.  But investing is NOT what most guys are doing right now.

I'll say it again because I don't think I can stress this enough.  Buying modern sports cards and sealed wax is a form of sports gambling.  So many people are discovering this reality because the card makers set it up this way.  Ripping packs is just as addictive as buying scratch offs.  I see it every single day.  Our shop has much more in common with the local casino than it does with the nerdy comic book/magic the gathering shop down the road.

Looks like a $15-$20K card to me.  Both Heritage and Goldin would bring a premium.  I don't know why I prefer Goldin.  It's probably because they're getting most of the press right now.

I’m getting different reads on its value. Goldin says $35K-$55K.  Heritage says $60K. The centering sub is 9.0 but the autograph is really nice- better than the PSA 10 that Heritage recently sold for $110K.
