2023 Draft and Season Discussion

I almost went with Lyles out of spite.  <_<

If I had landed Arozarena or not picked 3 starting pitchers in a row, he would have been in play here but I really needed the dual eligibility of Myers who I think will have a rebound season of sorts in Cincy… Brandon Drury for example did most of his damage last year playing for the Reds and specifically in that ballpark… and Fairbanks could be an elite closer if Cash just lets him be… and if he stays healthy.

I guess I missed the o's, was just looking at 3 teams in a row that could get him.   He's pitching for the royals and not going to be any good anyway

it was a toss up for me with Stroman and Bassitt.  Figured I'd lock my TOR rotation minus Gausman once he was gone I knew he would be once the opportunity presented.  Like lambert said it allows you to just take next guy up in case of an injury.  Shocked Drury went as high as he did but I knew he wouldn't be available still for me in 4-5 so regardless it didn't matter.  Now going 3 pitchers in a row is something I never really had the luxury of in past years.  At least not this early.

Happy to get Fairbanks this year. I mean, I realize it was at the expense of Nate Lowe... had they both been there though I would have opted for Fairbanks. Dylan Floro is my only exclusive who is projected for any saves... if he can hold the job. It looks like I may have also been aided by Lance Lynn falling to Mora..

Okay, I was doing some additional research and just learned that Evan Phillips is slated to be the Dodgers closer? Had no idea who he was and why Mookz drafted him. Also had no idea he pitched 3 innings for Tampa in 2021

Welp, looks like my secret is out.    I had this exact same revelation when reading player blurbs late in the season last year.  The name rang a bell to me because in some prior year there was a matchup between Evan Phillips (Os) and Phillip Evans (Pirates I think).  I rushed to confirm, and then pick him up, and he immediately became the second best player on my team, Yahoo rankings-wise.
Going into this draft I had to assume everyone was up on him, although I had a couple of clues that you still may not have been aware of him.  Anyway, had to grab him early and hope he still has things figured out this year.  He absolutely crushed it last year out of nowhere.

Whatever clues you had were correct . I actually was researching someone else, saw the teams that person had played for, and was like "oh. I think thats the guy Mookz drafted in round 2." I went to confirm and it was not... it was Evan Phillips. So I had to see what his deal was and who you shared him with. At least I wasn't the only other team that could have claimed him.

I will say that even had I known, I couldn't have afforded to fight you for him. At least not that early.

Yeah, it was really last year that I got the steal.  I basically drafted him where he would go this year anyway, if not higher.  I think the Dodgers closer is still to be decided (Hudson and Graterol), but even if he remains the setup guy I'd be fine with that.

6.7 - Randall Grichuk, OF, COL @lambert58 you're welcome.  I didn't really want to but still probably the best of my options right here.

Thank you!   I had him on my short list but didn’t really want to use a spot on him.   I’m sure he is due for 44 doubles and 31 HR at Coors.

Meanwhile I'm over here drafting scrubs because they are literally the only player I have available at those positions, lol.

This could be a year where I just have one guy go to another team.  3 picks to go :ninja:

My first real mess up of the draft... I saw Toronto had already made their 7th round pick, meaning I could get Adam at 8.6... but then I got nervous that KC might snatch him with one of their next two selections... but I have a feeling he was not looking that way as I believe Soler is the one player he is talking about.

Had I guessed correctly I would have had all 3 with Garcia and Paredes and Adam in the 8th.

oh well

Have to relook at my list tomorrow.  Don't think I ever saw Mr. Adam.  Had a going spreadsheet for all these years and rank and retire, re-team based upon off-season.  Had to take some off that never plated or pitched sometimes so every so often you find errors.

well, guess I could have sat on him. He honestly wasn't much of anything until last year. I picked him up once he started garnering saves and holds at the back end of the Rays pen and couldn't drop him. He seems slated to be their primary 8th inning option and potentially also get some saves since Tampa loves to not just have a dedicated closer.

Kevin Kiermaier.... welcome home, buddy

this is going to be a weird season without KK in tampa. He's been my favorite player since he got to the majors.

I'm gonna love him in TOR too but I really didn't feel I had a place on my fantasy roster for him.

That said I hope he blows up for 140+games, 10+ HR, 20+ SB and .310+ OBP.  You know his D will have his WAR starting +2.

Remember that time he stole your play card? .   I've always been a fan of amazing white boy, defensive center fielders. Used to like Jim Edmonds a lot.

and Kevin is easy on the eyes :)

We could likely be done today or tomorrow and then the supplemental roll can happen. ⚾

it took till 10.7 for my second pick to go.  I only lost Jorge Soler and Liam Hendriks (is he even going to play anytime soon) to other frafters?

Not sure when he comes back which is why I waited so long to take him.  Figure I'll be putting him on DL and hope he's back in a month or 2.  It costs me nothing at this point.  I'll be replacing on the roster with one of the exclusive RP that I also want on my roster.

I was considering the same, but was also contemplating Odorizzi as I'm guessing he's in line for work out of the pen and would have SP eligibility, plus he was available to multiple teams.

I was hoping to pull Odorizzi there.  I'm sure with the TEX rotation he'll have plenty of chances to start, and should pull some good holds in relief.

Damn work wifi, missed that cmh hasn't made his 10th rounder so technically he has the option of taking Peralta if he wanted.

Nelson Cruz -  man was he awful last year as my... 2nd overall pick? ... but I think if corrective eye surgery really does make a difference, he could be money in the San Diego lineup. With so many teams able to take him I was a little shocked he lasted as long as he did and right before he was selected I was thinking about just taking him if he made it back to me.

The problem for me is his Util only status. When Wander Franco was SS/3B, I could play him at 3rd and Willy Adames at Short. But currently, Adames only spot on most days is Util. When teams have an off day, Cruz would be nice for me to have. But all the other times (assuming he starts hitting again) it means I have to roll the dice on which hitter to leave on my bench which really isn't helpful for my already kind of light hitting team.

I suspect he fits in easier with the other owners who could lay claim to him who likely don't have one of their top 3 power hitters already at Util.

@Mookz for 3 straight picks  then @ZeroTolerance for 1 and back to Mookz to clean it up and we are finished.

Good work everyone. I don't remember the draft going so fast. Guess there were not as many tough decisions as past seasons for some of us. :dunno:

Next Steps are the supplemental roll and getting all the rosters loaded with drafted players before we do the 2 round supplemental draft

When we have a good group of Owners like this, it makes the draft run a hell of a lot smoother.  Great work everyone! 👍

It has always been a weighted lottery.   1 ball for the Mets, 2 balls for the Angels, 3 balls for you etc.  and a random order generator is used. So there is the possibility of moving up or falling down from your anticipated slot.

where have you been? lol

It's been the same each year since I joined in 2012 :P

I'm just busting your balls.

Are you the one who enters the rosters and such into Yahoo? We need to do that as well as the supplemental lottery before we do the supplemental draft.  Once we get those items taken care of, we can start the supplemental (which is a snake draft).

It's up to everyone if we want to start it right away or wait a bit closer to the start of the regular season to avoid injuries... we have 2 full weeks from today

In the past when cmh was too busy, it was either me, or lambert or GB that took care of it...  Since cmh is the commissioner, he would have to grant co-commissioner to others to help out...  I am not sure if you can pick more than one co-commissioner...

well, someone did it last year so I'm assuming it will be done again.

For some reason I had that in my mind too. 🤔  I think it's either a Mandela Effect thing, or else the fact that the All-Star supplemental is the reverse order of standings.
